Greedy. Price increase based on traffic from this deal. 'I know lets try it on with another increase' - I'd rather deal with a company that's stuck at a price that's fair to them and sustainable, this wreaks of greed.

My bad it's not 1070 spec, cross fired they trump a 1070 and get very close to 1080 speeds. I think it's cheaper to get a single 1070 but you would be slightly slower. Decisions decisions..

I think you mean around one card is around 970 spec, the 1070 is significantly faster. Not knocking it mind, still a good card and one I might well get when the price comes down to £150ish...

From what I've seen in reviews, 1 of these cards is approx 1070 spec but the idea is you buy 2 and corssfire (because they are cheap) and get near 1080 performance for about £200 less.

Agreed, but the GTX 1060 is priced up to $300, so I think you'll see the higher end RX480's touching the price of the lower end GTX1060's. The GTX1060 is predicted to sit somewhere between the GTX 970 and 980 from a performance perspective, which is where the RX480 seems to be sitting. I think we'll have to wait a see where the prices end up. It does sound like the GTX 1060 will have the edge on power draw and noise, personally, I'm prepared to pay a small premium for that.

Oh I'm aware, they aren't trying to compete with high-end, this is supposed to be a mid/upper-mid card for those that want affordable VR. If you want AMD flag ship, you'll have to wait for Vega (whenever the hell that comes out).

29 Jun 16 #74
Only if you go over 1080p. There's a small difference at 1440p (2K) and the gap widens at 4K (but you shouldn't be looking at this card if you want 4K anyway). I want to upgrade from an R9 270X and I think I should have bought the 4GB card at this price. I have a 2K monitor and I'm unlikely to upgrade for at least 2 years.

The clue is in the name. 480. In their lineup of cards this replaces the R9 380 and it is a lot better than that card. The fact it rivals the R9 390/x is great.

The RX 490 will come and that will be aimed at the 1070.

Its competitor will be the 1060, and it's faster than the 970. Excellent card for 1080p. If you're going above that, then yes, the 1070/1080 should be your port of calls.[/quote]I'd imagine the 1060 Will be faster. I'm thinking ~980 level ish performance (wouldn't make sense to have anything less really for Nvidia). It's only faster than the 970 in games that AMD generally always performed faster in, and it's slower in others. Really confusing card lol
rev6
29 Jun 16 #65
The RX 490 should be just that. If not then... Just nothing.
tropicocitwo
29 Jun 16 #64
I really don't get their marketing with this one. It performs better than a 970 on some games (mostly Hitman), worse than a 970 on others. Price is good, but performance is below a 390 on most levels... they went from a 290/290x to a 390/390x which had ~5% more performance, now they've released a card that's basically 290x level. I know Fury and Fury X flopped but why can't they develop something 1070 level and try to be price competitive?

That depends on the benchmark being run like the 290 vs 970.
daboy10
29 Jun 16 #61
So far from the reviews, it has been rather disappointing as the 480 barely keeps up with the 970 let alone, taking on the 1070. Overclocking has been a flop but then again it was just a reference card. Benchmarks don't look promising, really the only selling point is, is the price tag.

Wait for the Aftermarket versions to come out, but tbh I'm not expecting much.

What you could do is:
- Wait for the gtx 970 to drop in price
- Wait for the gtx 1060 to be released at a similar price range.
- Hold onto your card and wait for the next flag ship card, i.e. RX 490 which hopefully sticks with what it says on its tin.

29 Jun 16 #60
Aye... 4GB is enough for me. I'll take the power/cooling/noise/OC benefits of 3rd party boards over the extra 4GBs and probably a cheaper price when Nvidia react in a few weeks time.

29 Jun 16 1 #59
The pound being weak causes these cards, and all imported items, to be more expensive than last week. When we talk about leaving the EU some more, the pound will fall again. When article 50 is triggered, the pound will be $1.20 or less.
rev6
29 Jun 16 #58
Hopefully it's the same with the custom boards. Not even this would tempt me into buying a reference card
MadeInBeats
29 Jun 16 1 #57

From PcPer review:

Another oddity – and one that may make enthusiast a bit more cheery – is that AMD only built a single reference design card for this release to cover both the 4GB and 8GB varieties. That means that the cards that go on sale today listed at 4GB models will actually have 8GB of memory on them! With half of the DRAM partially disabled, it seems likely that someone soon will find a way to share a VBIOS to enable the additional VRAM. In fact, AMD provided me with a 4GB and an 8GB VBIOS for testing purpose. It’s a cost saving measure on AMD’s part – this way they only have to validate and build a single PCB.
ST3123
29 Jun 16 1 #56
Hope this is true, if so there is sure to be some clever soul will find a way to unlock it's hidden 4GB and make it practically the same as the dearer one and hopefully upload it for everyone to use. Would teach AMD not to artificially limit the card just to make a bit more on the supposedly bigger one....

Spoke with the greedy folk at OC and they suggest the only way is to talk to them on the forum, over the phone they can't explain why it happened.

I've explained that it's greedy and many are wondering why the increase within a couple of hours of going live, they've had a month to prepare pricing, so again, it seems like greed based on folk visiting the page.

They did reduce the price for me on the phone but can't explain why it's increased. I didn't order and will take my money to a competent retailer that doesn't price gouge because they're selling well, should have set a pricing level that matched the ambitious demand they had already forecast (again, it's evidence of further greed).
MadeInBeats
29 Jun 16 1 #50
Apparently, the 4GB cards actually have 8GB on-board, 4 disabled via BIOS. So it is said it was cheaper to do this than have a 2nd production run for both SKUs. Will only change when 3rd party manufacturers make their own cards.

I think the title should probably be changed such that it says 'RX 480' instead of 'RX480'.

I only say this because I was trying to search for pre-existing deals and the search terms 'AMD RX 480' and 'RX 480' returned no results when obviously this search result is highly relevant and that lack of space stopped it from appearing.

I like the guru3d review (its my goto site for reviews)

Yeah, at first glance it looks excellent, price for performance is superb (unless you have a 970 for sale), but when you look at the performance per watt compared to nvidia, especially the 1070 which uses less power and a lot faster too :disappointed:
The 1060 could be nvidias most important card yet. I'm waiting to upgrade to a decent 4k TV this summer before upgrading my trusty little 750ti GTX

29 Jun 16 #39
Ya I agree it is meh, but still about £50 cheaper than the GTX 970 for similar performance.
Seems like both NVIDIA and AMD have seriously over-hyped this generation which has ultimately led to disappointment; NVIDIA on price and AMD on performance... As usual.
catbeans
29 Jun 16 #38
That's abit premature considering AMD have no new cards released at 1070/1080 level and Nvidia have no new card 480 level.
cjaz99
29 Jun 16 #37
Hardware Canuck review has the Radeon 480 > nVidia 980 in DX12 and > nVidia 970 in DX11. Compared to the 970 in DX12 games: " It absolutely demolishes the GTX 970 across the board".

For future-proofing this looks a far better card than the 970 given it's superior performance in the newer API, it has more memory (remember the 970 only effectively uses 3.5GB), the performance is comparing early immature drivers on a a new architecture for the 480 to mature drivers on the no longer manufactured 970/980. Also, this is rumoured to be the chip architecture that the Xbox Scorpio and PS4 Neo which will help developers improve performance.

Amazing value for money but there are a few valid reasons to wait: 1. these are based on AMD's reference design and stock cooler which don't have the best reputation and custom designs should be available soon. 2. nVidia may be able to compete in the same price range with the unannounced 1060. 3. If you really need to spend less AMD have the 460 & 470 launching in the next couple of weeks.
crackshotkv
29 Jun 16 #36
That's the key issue, Nvidia wins on DX11 pretty consistently while on DX12, it looks like AMDs GCN is definitely coming up on top over Maxwell so there's a little more long term gains going forward.

Was planning to get one, judging by the benchmarks I'm not sure the 8GB is worth £220, even though the memory clock is 12.5% faster (8000MHz instead of 7000). This 4GB seems a good price though and £45 cheaper for only a 1-4% performance impact, heat added.
stanlenin
29 Jun 16 #32
25% faster than 970 in new titles with DX12. 970 has no future. RX 480 will never shine in DX11, but who cares. People who bot other than TOP nvidia cards have been sh£t upon for years.
ST3123
29 Jun 16 #31
I'd be surprised if you did, though quite old the 290 has lasted better than most cards, it's around the performance of a gtx970, which this rx480 is said to only equal at best so you would be upgrading to practically the same performance. Power usage and heat generation are probably much better as the 290 was reputed to be hot and power hungry but I'd normally want some performance upgrade too, which it wouldn't give...
Optimus_Toaster
29 Jun 16 #30
It was bought by caseking.de 4 years ago. And they are currently really pushing to be the cheapest too. If they aren't they'll normally price match.

29 Jun 16 #29
Doesn't that make you sad though? I would have thought "Great for 1440 and most 4K gaming" is what people were expecting. This is a "meh" card...will be popular though due to the low cost- well popular until Nvidia release their budget end cards that is.

GTX1070 should be about twice the price because it is at least as fast in 2560 x 1440 as this is in 1920 x 1080. I would say this card is a good sweet spot for most gamers who don't yet own anything akin to a GTX970/R9 390. It'll sell a lot I imagine, mid range king. For now, anyway....

Not really sure of the point of the 8GB version. If it had much better performance as the hype suggested then yes, but now the 4GB card is the one to get.

29 Jun 16 2 #22
after reading reviews and seeing the benchmarks it seems this card has pretty much the exact same performance as a gtx 970 but keep in mind that this card is on its first set of drivers and will get better overtime and has more gRAM than the 970. I suspect it will also get cheaper but is worth it at this price point

Great for 1080 and most 1440 gaming.
No need to upgrade most PSU's if you have a 6-pin PCIE connector.
Only downside is the blower cooler which have historically been noisy and inefficient.
Great price and I can't see NVIDIA competing with this on price for a while.

At 1080p or even 1440p this card is sufficient. To pay 25% more for a card with 8gb RAM seems overkill when you could get a stronger card for little more.

Thx RX480 is normally weaker than the 970 and 390X, but sometimes on par, and even marginally ahead but as usual, tested on a handful of games. Thermals are acceptable but not good.

Pretty good price. Glad there is at least the 4GB variant significantly under £200, may even be the best one to go for since I'm not sure if these really have the raw power to effectively use all 8GB.

Here's hoping it further pushes down the price of the AMD 300 series and Nvidia 900 series for some eBay and stock clearance bargains....
