I know, it's AMD and therefore not to peoples' taste this weather. However, it's very cheap and scores a PCMark score of 5,500 (although my experience benchmarks it 10% higher at just over 6,000).
Performance-wise? A quick gross comparison puts it into the same general league as a lower level i3 for about 40% of the price.
The downside, of course, is that it consumes 95Watts of power at peak, and it's floating-point performance is markedly worse as all current-generation AMD processors appear to be. It's also pretty much the end of the upgrade path for this platform, but might offer a cheap performance upgrade (2-3x) for those who have an AMD A4 or something similar.
Let's hope this dip in price will herald in the latest generation of AMD Zen processors that the world has been waiting for for the last wee while.
This is largely a AMD 7850K APU without the GPU and at around half the cost.
Note you can also try flubit for an instant offer of around 4% off (your mileage will vary of course).

Wat.
i3 6100 does duff this up and uses about the half the power while doing it. Even G4400 is a better bet if you building a cheap budget system, because at least it has an upgrade path.
But obviously so much here hinges on what board you have. This is really like an end of the line upgrade for those with obsolete boards, FM2+ is a dead end. For this price for those specific people, it's a no brainer.

Yeah, when it was £55 the G3258 was a better prospect. Way better power consumption, general better gaming performance, good overclocking potential, built-in (though limited GPU) and wide upgrade path. But £40 is good for what it is.

That's maybe not that clear-cut. i3 6100 scores about the same on Passmark, a wee bit less on multi-core for Geekbench 3 but more in single-core tasks. I haven't researched it thoroughly, but if you have any gaming benchmarks to post, it would be useful for other HUKDers.

Stick a Evo 212 Cooler on one of these and you have a budget gamer rig winner when paired with a decent GPU and Mobo. Mine has been running at 4.5Ghz stable for a year now. Tears through my RAW files from my DSLR as well in editing. Looking at recent i3 level performance ie better than Sandy Bridge and about as good as Haswell. I advice to chuck the stock cooler back in the box or the bin as it's utter rubbish! Also if your overclocking don't cook your VRM by accident with too much voltage.

Unfortunately, this is a dead end purchase. New CPUs from AMD coming out in few months will not be compatible.
As a brand new PC build on a budget right now it is viable, but if you can wait a few months do wait for new releases. As an upgrade option - I don't see what can one possibly upgrade from on FM2 socket.
I'm sure there are lots of AM2/3 CPUs that can benefit from single threaded performance increase, but this CPU is not compatible with AM2/3 sockets.

To anyone worried about a dead end platform, bare in mind very few people upgrade their CPU once installed. Doing so will normally limit your choices and for the sake of a new £30 mobo in budget PCs it really isn't worth worrying about. You can always stick the old bits on eBay or the trading forum here when you upgrade the lot.

Have you done/seen a build using this case and Hyper 212 evo? According to Zalman website:
The height of the cooler must not exceed 140mm from the motherboard.
PSU should not exceed 250mm (without SSD installed).

This is new cpu architecture, 4 actual cores and good speeds, team it up with a graphics card such as an Nvidia 960 GTX or AMD equivalent for just over £100 and guess what, you have a very capable gaming rig that will play all modern games on respectable settings! £39.99 is a steal for a solid quad core cpu. I have the Kaveri version with built in GPU (graphics processor), however, as I have a dedicated graphics card, the GPU section never gets used, I would of been better off saving my £90 i payed for the Kaveri APU and purchasing this CPU which is faster!

Looking to upgrade my server (old N36L microserver) and I plan on using this CPU
This is quite a power-hungry component for an always-on server, but it depends on what you want to use it for. I can have a couple of VMs running quite happily under Virtualbox. Looks quite posh for a small server replacement. You could definitely save money by getting cheaper MOBO etc.
Plus, I guess you're running it headless with no GPU Listed there.
