Great price for this little laptop. I know it's Alienware and they are overpriced but the closest spec to this one on their site is around £1160 so a decent saving here considering the free 3 year warranty too.

£900 and you only get a 960m. Whilst they've splurged out on an i7, 16gb of RAM, and a large SSD.
Once again HUKD shows how little it knows about pc gaming.

Genuine gaming laptops offer a great opportunity for people who don't just want to sit at their desk at home on their own when playing games and when done right have a multitude of benefits. I got rid of my desktop rig and old laptop to invest in a proper gaming laptop and was the best thing i ever did (after being a long time Desktop elitist).
I can play games anywhere in the house, on the train, round my friends houses without any issue. I can also plug three cables in and use my larger monitor, gaming keyboard and mouse at my desk as i always have done.
But for me the issue is how much performance do i sacrifice and how portable does it need to be? Im not taking it on planes everywhere, im not carrying it to work every day - its a true desktop replacement. I have a tablet PC for all that stuff.
So i went Alienware 18 - I7 4810MQ, 16gb Ram, 2 * 8gb GTX 880m's and a 1tb SSD. In benchmarks it beat my i5-4670k and GTX 970 FTW marginally. Benchmarks dont mean all that - Im playing GTA V, Doom and overwatch all on max settings with great frame rates.
AS for this machine - the 960m is very poor when compared to the 970m or even the older 880m for gaming. the U processor is designed for more energy efficiency. Its a nice machine, but not a desktop replacement and i dont think would have great gaming performance over other options. Personally i think Gaming Desktop + All purpose laptop or all out gaming laptop. This is a bit of somewhere in the middle compared to machines like the one below.
Better processor, larger screen, much better GPU, DDR 4 RAM, and weighs the same as the 13" in this post.
Just my two pence - voted hot though as good price if you want this machine

Its a very niche confused little laptop, its trying to be a gaming laptop but falls short as its under powered for the res, and its trying to be a portable but falls short as will eat the battery and has to be quite thick to dissipate the heat. Oh and do laptops even game properly on the battery? i know my gaming laptop stutters if i try game on the battery.

I7 6700hq

Also easy to upgrade, one screw and the whole back comes off

There are some nice alternatives above but people are missing the point that this is a much more portable form factor. The CPU and gpu should mean you get an ok battery life and is more than powerful enough for the res screen

Well, the 6700U isn't likely to bottleneck a 960m, and it's a lot more power efficient than the HQ series, so I don't think it's a terrible choice. If we were talking about a real gaming laptop it would start to matter much more.

Great little machine. For those looking for something larger, faster and cheaper you might consider this.
Processor is better. It is a wee bit cheaper. Guarantee not as long, but credit is offered if needed too.
Just an alternative for those wanting a bigger screen. My personal choices is for around 13-14 inch screen, but I can't afford either!

I had a Lenovo with a 960m and it really struggled. I mainly plain strategy games as well which aren't exactly graphically intensive. My recommended settings in Attila total war were 'Low' at 1280x800.
Ended up with a refurbed Alienware R2 15 with a 980m and although it cost me twice as much but its more than twice as good.
I'd try and push your budget to a 970m if your looking for 1080p

I mainly play strategy games and its perfect for me. That said I rarely used my 960m laptop as it just wasn't as good an experience as my desktop. If my laptop felt underpowered in anyway I'd always end up back on my P.C

I sort of want a gaming laptop but could really just use one for my part time study. Not sure whether to go all out for power or just get something under 500. Got a decent desktop PC for my games but would be so tempted to use my steam library .. Can't make my mind up. Maybe I should keep it cheap and just use it for indie games and Magic the gathering lol

should be able to set the power profile to match performance as when its plugged in.
one thing however is that I cannot recommend gaming on the xps (9550 in my case) since the thing gets extremely hot without some sort of decent cooling pad underneath. I suppose that's a major benefit of the alienware .

I've been playing games solely in laptop for 6 years. All kind of games. Maybe you won't have highest fps/details but some people prefer only having 1pc than 2 (laptop to move around and desktop for games). Of course you compromise, a gaming laptop is not as portable, not as powerful and more expensive.
Now I have 2pcs again (laptop+gaming desktop) and sometimes I regret it. It's a real hassle (you spend half time moving files around, you need duplicate licences for programs, duplicate back-ups if you do them). It's much more time consuming.

Powerful laptops have other uses than gaming too.
I use an Asus 17.3 laptop with i7 HQ and 960M for simulation. It drives 4 external screens through a port-rep to give 2x 3840x2160 resolution total. Screens allocated as control/parameters , main output and selective zooms. Fans are super-quiet.
The OP's deal has quite a narrow use case. Would I sacrifice a larger screen and 2 cores for the portability? Think I'd prefer my laptop plus a cheap lower power ultraportable, but YMMV. Nice machine anyway.

Sure, I find it much easier to take to LAN parties than my desktop.
To be honest, since I got my alienware laptop my desktop sees very little use unless it's a game that requires proper keyboard+mouse skills at a desk. If it's a casual game I'll definitely sit on the sofa and use the laptop. If it's a controller game I'll either use the desktop or the laptop depending on whether my wife wants to watch the TV.
Gaming laptops have come a long way and are no longer the joke that they once were.

used to have this before upgrading the th 17 with a 980m. It's a fantastic laptop for the price. will play most games at ps4ish quality. used to use it with my tv or monitor at home and take to work to play at lunchtime. If you don't need the portability then the 15 or 17 from the outlet can sometime be had for £1000-£1400 with a 970m or 980m which are true desktop replacements.

Just to make you guys aware when you do your comparisons and performance ratings, there is a 960M 2GB GDDR5 and a 960M 4GB GDDR5. The Asus Zenbook linked in post number #8 for example and the laptop for this deal both have the 2GB version . The laptop linked in post number #32 and the Acer Vn7-792G-79LX Black Edition (laptop I own) have the 4GB version. Could make a difference in newer games and some other none gaming applications. Get 4GB+ graphics memory really if you can.
I play Metal Gear Revengeance on High at 1080p on mine and Rise of Tomb Raider also plays on High at 1080p according to Steam forums. Once a game runs at 30fps+ I rate that as good, that's a little higher than what most video content is by the way.

I don't think it's a case of carrying around a monitor.
I took mine on holiday, and used the HDMI cable to plug into the 32" TV on the wall to watch an HD film one night. Worked fine.
Surely at home if you've got this machine, you'll have a decent enough TV in more than one room in the house. So portable gaming on whichever TV you choose?

Most people aren't always on the move with their laptop and will in fact spend a decent amount of time using it at home where docking it is an option. Of course on the move it isn't an option, but unfortunately you have the trade-off between weight and screen size. The 15" weighs approx 5kg which is 2.5x the amount this 13" laptop weighs.
Being able to use it on the small screen on the go then plug it into a monitor at home works. For others it doesn't.

Come on people - to get a good gaming machine, you're looking to spend around £800+. As long as you can play all current games at decent resolution then great but the key thing with this is that you go no excuse to NOT use it! I would love to be playing some FarCry4, Dark Souls or FIFA16 on my commute!

I'm not entirely sure why this is gaining so much heat, seems pretty average to me. I'd rather get something like this Asus - 8GB ram and a 128GB SSD, but a better CPU and screen size, for £50 cheaper - https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B015OG3T1Q/ref=olp_product_details?_encoding=UTF8&me=
Plus there's a Used - Very Good for £738, which is a cracking deal
Is there any real harm in just putting together a really good desktop rig and then Steam Streaming or using Nvidia's alternative streaming method? I'm not a hardcore gamer but I managed to enjoy months of streaming to a Surface Pro when I couldn't access the TV, and I didn't personally find it painful in the slightest. Obviously I'm not an über gaming geek who looks at the minutiae of spec and worries about what generation CPU he has, but I can at least speak as a fan of casual gaming!
Obviously you can't do this on the train, but I'd be damned if I'd carry a laptop as heavy as this one around with me for that eventuality.

How is that on gaming? Like, modern games on what graphic setting? Keep hearing comments to go for a 970 but prices jump a lot when going for that card. I wouldnt even be a hardcore gamer i like to balance between console and laptop but i spent quite a pop on an m17x in 2009 which only lasted a few year of high settings till i had to start tweaking settings so I need something a bit more future proof if im gonna spend that kind of cash

Depends on what kind study you do.
If it's just word, powerpoint, web browsing etc you're better getting a laptop under £500.
I've not checked many laptops under £500 recently but last I checked the Lenovo E565 ThinkPad looked pretty good for under £300.
If you do any work that needs better hardware (development, virtualisation etc etc) then you'd probably want to spend good money.
This at £900 is trash, it uses i7-6500U and not the i7-6700HQ, it is bulky for what it is, ugly and way overpriced.
You can get better and cheaper.
Dell 15-7559 (£750), MSI GP62 6QF (£790), Asus GL552VW (£800) and Asus N552VW (£850) are all much better options.

I know very few people with gaming laptops who play demanding games on the move. but plenty of people who carry HDMi cables around with their laptops with the intention of bigger screen use.
BTW Portable projectors are getting quite good. forget 24", games are never the same again after playing on wall-sized screens. Although this will be irrelevant when VR starts getting AAA Games. People are going to want to go portable to show their friends

Strange that there's so much rage in this thread about this deal getting so much heat? It's a relatively compact laptop that has a reasonably good graphics card (approximately equivalent to a desktop GTX 780ti (EDIT sorry meant a 750ti) and what is actually a pretty good price really
Yes you can get a larger laptop for less with similar spec (the dell 7559 for example) but it's much less compact
Yes you can get laptops with better graphics (the 970m is a huge leap up and the aortas x3 is a good bet or the razer 14) but it costs a lot more and if you're not fussed about maxing out all the graphics you can still gaming with better quality than an Xbox/ps4
Also finally it's worth noting the Alienware 13 is comparable with the Alienware graphics amplifier so if top graphics/upgradability is important you can get that as well as a future upgrade
Resa6969
9 Jun 16#68
First of all an i7 will make a bigger difference on a laptop against the i5 when compared to the desktop i5 and i7 which are already very powerful. 256gb is not what is considered a large SSD when there are 2tb ssd's on sale these days. The 16gb ram could have been 8gb I suppose so you have a point for that as the extra 8gb is not really utilised by most applications.
Resa6969
9 Jun 16#69
GTX 780ti? Never in a million years mate, this has roughly the same performance as a gtx 750 ti on the desktop so it is not so good but that's what you get on a laptop.
P666DOM
9 Jun 16#70
You can add a HDMI cable to your backpack with minimal issue so it's always good to have one. I have a 17in laptop with a 980m and I also carry a wireless controller and you can get a couple of hours gaming capped 30 fps from battery life. If you can plug in while you're out too great but for me it's not really about the mobile gaming it's about the mobility of the gaming system.
But, if you do a lot of travelling and like to game then a gaming laptop is what you want, most of the basic hotels like travelodge and premier inns have crappy 22" monitors which you can barely even read the TV guide at the distance they are from the bed. So in this instance I would prefer a 17inch 1080p IPS display with G-SYNC over the other available display.
I check out projectors every now and then but aren't we still in a situation where you need a dark environment to get good results? I would imagine this applies even more so for portable ones.

It's still a good price. It's about the same price as other laptops with a 960m, and has the advantage of having a unique screen size.
Also despite what people say, alienware laptops are really nice. Much more simple design than MSI etc.
clewis09
9 Jun 16#72
If you were designing a laptop purely for gaming, there's no way any sensible system builder would have chosen those components.
It's the classic case of choosing components based on how good they sound, and judging by the heat on here, it clearly works.

The gtx 780ti is better than a desktop 970. Which is better than a desktop 960, which is better than a 960m.
The reason people dislike the fact it is getting so much heat, is that you would have to be a real goron to think that an £800 "Gaming" laptop that only comes with a gtx 960m is a good deal.

Not really, not if you want a 13.3 inch screen at least. I've been looking at laptops a lot the past few weeks, this isn't a bad price. It's just that a 960m isn't that great, but it's still a good price.

Much better deal IMO. Slightly bigger screen but still portable, much better CPU, the 965m is considerably better than the 960 and is £50 more than the alienware.
Good price, tho without Windows 10 which adds £79 onto the prices quoted and pushes it over the £1000 mark - the 965m is a good step up from the 960m tho so is worth considering whether you'd want to pay the extra £100 over the alienware

you want a quad core processor for gaming laptop like a i7-6700HQ, has double the processing power.

Think the outlet offers far better value
Also easy to upgrade, one screw and the whole back comes off
Processor is better. It is a wee bit cheaper. Guarantee not as long, but credit is offered if needed too.
Just an alternative for those wanting a bigger screen. My personal choices is for around 13-14 inch screen, but I can't afford either!
Not trying to troll.
Ended up with a refurbed Alienware R2 15 with a 980m and although it cost me twice as much but its more than twice as good.
I'd try and push your budget to a 970m if your looking for 1080p
one thing however is that I cannot recommend gaming on the xps (9550 in my case) since the thing gets extremely hot without some sort of decent cooling pad underneath. I suppose that's a major benefit of the alienware .
Now I have 2pcs again (laptop+gaming desktop) and sometimes I regret it. It's a real hassle (you spend half time moving files around, you need duplicate licences for programs, duplicate back-ups if you do them). It's much more time consuming.
Looks pretty decent I have to say. Only difference is the CPU. 5500U as opposed to 6500U
I play Metal Gear Revengeance on High at 1080p on mine and Rise of Tomb Raider also plays on High at 1080p according to Steam forums. Once a game runs at 30fps+ I rate that as good, that's a little higher than what most video content is by the way.
I took mine on holiday, and used the HDMI cable to plug into the 32" TV on the wall to watch an HD film one night. Worked fine.
Surely at home if you've got this machine, you'll have a decent enough TV in more than one room in the house. So portable gaming on whichever TV you choose?
Being able to use it on the small screen on the go then plug it into a monitor at home works. For others it doesn't.
Once again HUKD shows how little it knows about pc gaming.
Very cold.

Plus there's a Used - Very Good for £738, which is a cracking deal
better spec and cheaper
Obviously you can't do this on the train, but I'd be damned if I'd carry a laptop as heavy as this one around with me for that eventuality.
The only reason that I think people would be willing to pay this is for the 13" screen and form factor.
But then disagree with yourself with:- "but I personally don't think a screen so small suits gaming".
So you disagree with yourself.
Have you anything else you would like to contract yourself on?
BTW Portable projectors are getting quite good. forget 24", games are never the same again after playing on wall-sized screens. Although this will be irrelevant when VR starts getting AAA Games. People are going to want to go portable to show their friends
Also despite what people say, alienware laptops are really nice. Much more simple design than MSI etc.
You can't get a 970m for less than £1070.
Not that that's a bad thing, it can still put out some console beating performances and at this price for such a portable laptop that's pretty impressive
14" FHD 1080 screen
GTX 965M
i7 6700-HQ
8GB DDR 4
250gb SSD
£956 Delivered Direct. Can be configured up to a gtx 970 for £80 and i7-6820HK for £111
Much better deal IMO. Slightly bigger screen but still portable, much better CPU, the 965m is considerably better than the 960 and is £50 more than the alienware.
Configure and buy here:

Or Win 10 Pro less than £20 from kinguin
That cannot be legal the licence is tied to the original machine.
