Could but believe my luck. After all this hot weather I thought I'd go for it and get one of those air con units. Went to homebase where I knew they had the 8000 btu air con units for £159 they had several 9000 btu units. Asked what the price was surprised when she said £99.93. Well needless to say I ripped her arm off. This was in the Sandbach store, several left and also advised end of line for that model so should be national.

This calls for another definition...
Dismemberment is the act of cutting, tearing, pulling, wrenching or otherwise removing the limbs of a living thing. It has been practised upon human beings as a form of capital punishment, can occur as a result of a traumatic accident, or in connection with murder, suicide, cannibalism or the purchasing of an air conditioner.

Just dug out our portable air conditioner, a bit noisy and bulky, but god send in this humid weather. Rather have the noise but comfort than this sticky warm weather to sleep.

Oh by the way, me 'ripping her arm off' is a figure of speech, not a literal term. It's a Del Boy thing, nothing more, so I won't be spending time in HMP forest bank or wormwood. Been good fun tho...

Have to admit our lounge has been cooler during summers thanks to LED bulbs. They barely give off any heat :sunglasses:

Ive gone through 3 air conditioners in my incredible self heating bedroom. As soon as you switched it off, bam the heat would go straight back to where it was at before, and they would only ever knock 5 Celsius off. The room drives me insane, it can be 15c outside all day and the sodding room at night will still hit 24c! Must be something to do with brick construction and a south facing wall.
Anyway...... I found that a £50 high velocity fan is more effective than all 3 air cons ive owned, but only if attached directly to a window(diy skills needed), and having the door opposite ajar. Its quieter, cheaper to buy and costs 20x less to run. 1.4p per hour vs 20-30p! oh and it works immediately whereas the air took forever.

For all the naysayers, I have an Amcor 13,000 BTU air conditioning unit and it costs around 9p/hour to run, while the cooling is active. Once the room is at temperature, the cooling function turns off it and it acts as a fan (at maybe 1p/hours, if that). Overall, it doesn't cost more than £1 - £1.50 (depending on outside temp) per day to run and that's if I left it on all day!
I wouldn't live without air con again, worth every penny to me!

Why? Do you worry about your fridge and your freezer using lots of electricity?
This is essentially a fridge - so shouldnt cost that much to run

Portable air cons are pretty unwieldy, you need to vent the exhaust via a exhaust tube out the window, but the thing is only like 1.5m so unless you have the air con right next to the window it won't be long enough!

You can buy an attachment for a window (about 12 quid in Argos I think) that you open the window slightly and trap this in, it has a hose built in you attach to the air con and it extracts there through the gap and still seals.

I bought this last year as the £239 and need to point out a couple of things if. At £99 its a steal, deal, sale of the century. At £239 its a disappointment. The units needs to be vented, in other words the hot air it extracts needs an exit. The unit comes with a hose similar to the ones you get with tumble dryers and is problematic that the only way I could get it to remain in place is using a lot of gaffe tape. 2, the hose is short by around 1 meter so getting it out of a window can be an issue. 3, when the compressor kicks in it noisy, really noisy making a loud clanking sound which if you are a light sleeper like me it will wake you. 4 used it a few nights last year and used it first time this year on Monday, already the unit is not working as quickly to cool the room. Like a said, at £99 i am tempted to go out and buy another one for the lounge. good find.

Proper air conditioners 8000-10000btu arround 2000watts, 20p per hour at current costs(If always on) i assume they all kicked the bucket as i had to have them on so much. Single hose portable air conditioners aren't very efficient either, but there aren't many dual hoses about in the UK.

It costs a massive amount compared to a fridge!!!! A fridge only cools a tiny well insulated box of air. An air con is around 2000watts, 20p per hour, however it cycles on and off, so it will be less depending on how hot the room is.

Its been running all night and according to my smart meter, I used 45p between midnight and 05.30including fridges and freezers so not hugely expensive to run............and in my opinion worth every penny. Made for a very comfortable nights sleep.
