The sun doesn't have to be shining on the panels.
My solar panels charge without the sun when it's dull. Dull...like your reply. I know how solar panels work and they do work in winter. They work very well too infact in my back garden. Perhaps it's too dull where you live, as dull as your response maybe?

.............and we get daylight from the sun ......its the sun that charges them up........duh. If its been a dull day my solar lights dont come on. It would be VERY RARE to get solar lights working through the winter

These would be rotten at Christmas due to no sun to charge them up!

Great when they work - unfortunately soldering between solar panel and rest of the unit is very poor.
