Amazing that it's back. At £150 it's a no-brainer and a steal.

I bought the Triban 500SE a month ago or I'd be all over this.

Small, size 51cm frame only

This is an absolute bargain for a small rider looking for a first road bike. I bought one a year ago when they had the smaller ones on sale for £199 and it's the best thing I've ever bought for that amount of cash. I commute to work daily on it (24km round trip), use it for weekend rides of up to 100km with a cycling club and it's performed brilliantly.

To clear some stuff up: the wheels are 650c, not 650b. Replacement inners are common and cheap, tyres less so (but you still have choice). I'm still running to stock wheels and tyres on mine. Have had 2 punctures over 4000km which isn't bad. Going to upgrade the wheels soon as I'm getting more serious about cycling. The smaller wheels suit me fine tbh.

I'm ~5'4" if anyone's wondering if it's suitable for them. In the 11 months I've had it, it's had one service including a new chain, cassette and cables. I bought some better brake pads soon after I bought the bike and they've been fine. I've also put new bar tape on, and a new saddle. So my upgrades have been relatively cheap and minimal. If you know how to adjust derailleurs you'll live a happy life with the groupset. It's actually a mixed 2300/Sora, and I've not had any major problems with it.

In summary: If you're a short rider looking for a road bike, buy this. I love mine to pieces. If you still need convincing, read this, which I wrote about how my bike changed my life: https:[email protected]/my-bike-changed-my-life-c08ac26766ff#.hgls1cppj

How would one of these be as a 'pub bike'? I've got a road bike already, but want something for riding a couple of miles at a time to shops or pub - and this is cheaper than a decent hybrid...

Yes exercise is essential. In fact sod the weather I'm going to have a cycle in to town now. Fortunately for everyone's eyes I won't be wearing Lycra. A fat bald middle aged man in Lycra, well you'd rather be chopping onions and rubbing them in your eyes than see me in Lycra. Hopefully one small mercy is if I cycle enough and eat properly I might not be fat anymore

But surely for £150 it's ok?

The drivetrain (2300) is low end in my opinion. Starting top to bottom in the shimano hierarchy I would put them in this order....
Road Bike Components:
Dura-Ace
Ultegra
105
Tiagra
Sora
Claris/2400
2300
2200
But still OK for light use.

If you can find one in your size this is a bargain for £150. I've had one for three years and done about 1500 miles on it with no problems other than the front deraileur was a bit finnecky to get exactly right. I've only just replaced the original chain. Only other upgrades I've made have been the tyres (stock ones aren't very puncture resistant in my experience) and the brake pads (standard pads border on dangerous!). And the saddle.
It's not particularly light though, I have a 57cm one and it is slightly over 10kg.
The 2300 shifters are a little dated now though as they have thumb shifters which mean you can't use them in the drops but apart from that they are solid.
Still on the stock wheels which are OK but I've needed to true them up a couple of times. I've done rides up to around 60 odd miles on it and it's pretty comfortable.
SFconvert
21 May 16 1 #21
If the bike is of the smaller sizes with the smaller wheels then it is not possible to fit bigger wheels, firstly they won't fit in the frame and even if they did the brakes wouldn't line up with the rims!

I bought one of these a couple of years ago as a first road bike. It was terrific at twice the price! Lots of fun to ride and it's solid and reliable despite what one poster said. These bikes have near legendary status among anyone who has ever ridden one and got great reviews when they were £299.99 "In the value-for-money stakes alone, it is by far the most impressive machine we have ever tested."

Might be worth getting 51cm delivered to store and try it for this money.

Yes should be fine. It will be more of a racing posture than a casual. I'm 5ft11" and my daily (loose term these days) bike is a 57cm and my race bike is a 54cm. A smaller bike will provide maximum power but at the expense of comfort. It may hurt your back and wrists more until you get used to it.

Got one of the 51s last year for £199 and it's served me well for the occasional commute to work (28 mile round trip). I'm 5'7 and it seems to fit me fine (though this is my first road bike, when i tried a 300se in 54 when the shop staff suggested this would be too small they both seemed equally uncomfortable to me) decided to get another at this bargain price to set aside for the 9 year old to get in few years time.

It's a "proper" road bike, in the sense that it has proper road shifters (ie not those rubbish butterfly shifters on the stems), a proper cassette (cheap BSOs will have a 7 speed freewheel which means your top gear is quite low). It's also not too heavy and has a decent carbon fork which absorbs more of the road buzz.

It's a good bike for the money, yeh its not fully speced up an carbon but it's not that price it's an entry bike or a weekender on the road as long as you oil it grease it clean it an adjust the gears an brakes after a few rides it will do what it's ment to roll. Just because you can afford the latest gear doesn't mean you can ride get a mountain bike a go to a trail centre there's loads of bikes wasted.

GAVINLEWISHUKD
21 May 16 #66
The frame size makes no difference to the wheel size. All running 650s does is just lower the overall bike height. It does mean you run slightly smaller cranks but they should adjust the chainset to match. If you want a race position you can probably get away with being upto about 5ft7".
7600e
21 May 16 #68

GAVINLEWISHUKD
21 May 16 1 #69
5ft-5ft4 for casual riding (seat around stock picture) upto 5ft7 if you want a more racing setup (look at first customer picture)
kramer2088
21 May 16 1 #70
no way 5ft 7 regardless of setup, wheels too small and basically you are negating any advantage of having a road bike by having hybrid size wheels

22 May 16 #74
Hybrid wheels are 700c though, and are actually overall a larger diameter than road bikes due to the higher profile of the tyre. Apparently though, wheel size doesn't make as much difference to speed / energy as people think. But agree that 650 c wheels can look a little silly on these
7600e
22 May 16 #75
I would have bought but unfortunately I'm 5'8" so assuming I'd need the 54. Anyone know how often stock updated or just random?
GAVINLEWISHUKD
22 May 16 #76
Once again the wheel size has nothing to do with frame size. By using 650c wheels on smaller bikes just helps keep the reach ratio more in tune with the frame size. Using 700cc mean you have to stretch the frame often giving a poor riding position.
So for most people the trade off for using smaller wheels for a better riding position is a good one.
GAVINLEWISHUKD
22 May 16 #77
To put sizing into perspective.

Mark Cavendish 5ft8- 49cm bike.
Sir Bradley Wiggins 6ft3- 56cm bike.

While I'm not sure it would be fun riding Cavs bike for long!
SFconvert
22 May 16 #78
Frame geometry plays a large part though, pros woud tend to have their seat raised higher for a more aggressive riding position, ie you'd have a larger frame for a sportive type bike (more relaxed upright position) versus a more sporty bike (where you'd have the seat higher, ass sticking up in the air stye for better aerodynamics)

Exactly the point I was making and explained in my earlier posts.
You often see people in Halfords being recommended 59cm bikes when they are 5ft9 then have to ride it with the seat at the same level as the stem. They would probably be better off with a flat bar hybrid bike running slicks.

Took the plunge and bought this, I'm 5ft6in (on a good day) with a 29/30 inside leg - my commute is around 2 miles per day and I'm using a rubbish bike that was given to me after my MTB was nicked (whilst locked up) from our garage - it's getting delivered as we have no Decathlon stores over her so the question I ask is, is it difficult to assemble? Yes it does - when it was £299 it was the cheapest bike to have one. At £150 this is a no-brainer if it's the right size for you. The issue of the 650 wheels is minor. It doesn't really affect performance or sizing but 650c replacements/upgrades are harder to come by and more expensive than the more standard 700c. But with the money you're saving that shouldn't matter too much!

JUST BUY IT! Comfort, bombproof, and excellent value - not to mention fun. Yes, I've upgraded the wheels (after a year or so) and the groupset (after a couple of years..and only to Tiagra) but mine's done 10,500KM and its brilliant. I will say no more. Yes, you can get higher end components, but you CANNOT get a better deal for a brilliant bike...I repeat. JUST BUY IT!

One issue *could* be mudguard clearance. it comes with 23mm, and you can run 25mm easily enough, but clearance is tricky there
Farhan007
22 May 16 #102

They come in at £35 odd tho. But, they're great, can't tell them being on. Perfect.
plasticniki
22 May 16 #103
Mudguards are tricky for 650c wheels. I've not been able to find any which aren't the seat post mounted ones, so I've not bothered, and instead use an extended ass saver for really wet days. With commuting, I change when I get to work so don't care about rain and spray too much. It's club rides and rides with others where they'd be handy because the spray from the road can be horrible.

What i can tell you is alot of years ago , when i was heavily into biking i did have a small framed bike , and it kinda forces the issue of getting down into more a racing aerodynamic position , which is odd at first but soon get used to it , but the years pile on and so does the beer belly and the gut , so that might be one of the contributing factors against , if of a slim build then surely it would be ok , i am 5.10 i`ve ordered one , i think again there will be a learning curve but ok after a few rides out.

Hi
just read your little story on Medium.com , never heard of the site , but I'll be visiting it to read up others' life stories /experiences. Anyway back on point , I see what you mean about taking up cycling , good one you took it up and enjoy it !! I gave up cycling myself for a couple of years after graduating, it was the worst 2 years of my life . Took an old boy.. a patient of mine ..stopping me in the street one day to ask why I'd stopped cycling .." and didn't I know his imagination took flight when he saw a younger person like myself riding a bike which he could no longer do". I told him I thought the responsibility of working and also keeping a roof overhead and the dangers of London roads had made me check it all in . He replied that if I was afraid to live now it would follow me for the next 40-50 years. That weekend I got the bike back out and haven't looked back . I'm happiest on a bike. My kid sis worries about the direction of my maturity but knows she'd be hard-pressed to find a lady willing to take on a mixed discipline keen cyclist ( I own several including downhill MUni's , Penny Farthing Wheelsize Unicycles , Stock & also Modstock trials bikes , hardtail MTB's & I hope to own a recumbent sometime)
yeah bikes, books and the radio are my principle pastimes. On a Saturday evening after work I always head out for 55k ride loop around the capital stopping off at a Tower bridge cafe to beg some hot water to brew my own green tea leaves . The first hr I ride hard and fast , thereafter it's a more idyllic cruise. Sundays I head out on one of the trick bikes to try and ride impossible stuff. Once a week I walk 2km to work but then return home via a circuitous 8km route. I enjoy this but never fail to be amazed by strangers that stop me to inquire " wheres the bike?". I explain that I like to walk 10km once a week and leave the bike at home and walk to work & back . Incidentally I never get asked anything when I g running that exact same route later in the week! ha
I'm rambling now but yeah it's good to know someone's caught the cycling bug. I can definitely relate to every bit of your journey so far.. Not long to to L2B ride now.

Keep riding !!
Ciao

24 May 16 #126
No, this bike is no longer being manufactured. These will be old stock which has turned up (at a warehouse in Turkey apparently!). You won't find them in the Decathlon shops at all and when they are gone they are gone...unless some more turn up unexpectedly but that's looking pretty unlikley. This is a bananas price for a proper road bike but decathlon still have some very decent and well-reviewed road bike models at low prices like the Btwin 500SE (£299) which are still in stores and available in most sizes. Triban 500SE £299
Farhan007
24 May 16 2 #127
I have that 500SE. first road bike, after a cheap Apollo.

Ever since I've had it, I've sold my Honda CBR, and dedicated myself to it. 5 days a week to and from college. And then on Saturdays put a few miles in just because it's fun.

Honestly, those who don't have a road bike, get one! So many benefits.

My 51 had just arrived and delivered by DHL 30 minutes ago. Exciting to unbox it after work to try as my inside leg is 30" so anxious that it may not fit.

Sounds perfect for me (5'3") if I do ever get a bike but I just doubt I'd ever feel ok cycling on roads  I didn't even like driving on the road in driving lessons! I've also only cycled outside of a park/cycled as an adult once.

I wish every location had an 100% cycle path route! Then I'd go for it.

Hi Niki, Great little story. It will hopefully be an inspiration to others. I've been a keen "leisure" cyclist for the past 40 years and feel that it is the only thing that keeps me fit and healthy, (apart from the 3 months out of action in 2014 with a shattered collar bone after a collision with some cows in Scotland!)

This wouldn't be my kind of bike as I have to have mudguards and a rack, (haven't carried a bag on my back since I was 16,) but I've just been reading some of the reviews on the site and what stood out for me was how responsive the customer service appears to be. If they are still as good then for the money it looks like a great first bike.

I hope that you have a great lifetime of cycling ahead of you and try some cycle touring at some stage. It is THE best way to see a country.

LG.

renault760 The Triban 3 will take narrow mudguards and a rack. I used mine as a weekend tourer with SKS Raceblades and a Tortec rack with panniers. It worked fine. Others have used them as full tourers without problem.

For example, there are currently two £100 gift cards on there for £86 each!

24 May 16 #139
It's rather an odd comparison. A road bike versus a suspension-equipped hybrid that is over three times the price...
Both seem like reasonably good bikes but in terms of value for money the Triban beats the Crosstrail. I suppose it depends on your requirements/preferences and budget.
MarzBarz

24 May 16 1 #141
you`ll be fine , some people on this thread are really over thinking this frame size stuff, i measured the frame out against some old bikes i have and i`m confident 51 will be ok and i`m 5.10 , but then there will be some on here who will argue that point , personally as others have stated on here , am not bothered ill get used to it , i dont it will be as stupidly small as somethink....mine comes tomorrow guess i`ll see then.lol......
rev6
24 May 16 #142
The headtube is quite a lot shorter on the 51. Think you need to raise the saddle to get a good leg motion and it means if you go much smaller you'll have to bend further. It might be good for professionals but for most I'd assume comfort is important. Also toe overlap.

Saying all the above. It might be a perfect fit.

I collected the 51 size yesterday. I'm 5'7" and was a bit surprised at how small the bike looked tbh.

Anyway after I got it home I was able to tinker with the seat height a little. I tried adjusting the handlebar height but either wasn't doing it right or it couldn't be done - online manual seems to suggest they're set at the max height when you collect. Luckily I needed to change the angle of the handlebar so after doing this it felt a lot better.

Just a little warning for anyone taller than me.

Please can someone help me? I am petite ( 5.15 ft). Will this bike any good for me? I am considering commuting 10-11 miles / a day to work in summer time. I've never ridden a road bike before on the road with all the traffic so I am a bit scared. The route to work for me sometimes can be hilly. I did look at the folding bike before, but was told it won't be suitable for my journey because of the hills. Thank you.
Farhan007
25 May 16 #147
I think this will be ok for you, considering your size the 51 may be perfect!

Just make sure to wear a helmet and possibly some cycling gloves to protect your hands if you do come off for some reason.

Apart from that, the bike should be more than applicable for your use!

Edit: Oh and get a decent lock too, like a Kryptonite or Abus. Unless you keep you bike inside, in which case that's the best option.

Well for a start the T3 is less than half the price! Other than that they are very different bikes. The T3 is a proper ride bike built for soaking up the miles quite quickly on roads. The Specialised crosstrail is designed to cover roads and light trails by the look. It's a flat bar with wider tyres, probably heavier and slower and more upright riding position, but if you want it for a commute or to do some light trails it might be the one for you.
Road bikes come more into their own the more miles you do. I've done 80 miles on a T3 wouldn't want to tackle that on the Spesh. As always with a bike it depends waht you want to do with it, what sort of cyclist you are and what your budget is.

The Specialized is a steal at 200 if you can get it new for that and it's more of an all-rounder. I'd go for that if I were you.
wantsomepls
25 May 16 #153
You'd probably find the Specialised more versatile if you are thinking of going off tarmac at any point. If you want speed on road then it'd be the T3. Most bikes would be comfortable enough for an hour. But if you get a road bike you might find that one hour soon turns into two...three (but you might then want a new saddle on the T3) and then the world is your oyster!

Mudguards are more difficult for the 650c Triban.

25 May 16 #156
My one arrived today, unboxed and set it up ready for son who is about 5 feet tall. The bike itself is the right size but due to the length of the seat post there is still a few inches of post showing meaning the saddle is just too high. I'm going to cut a bit off the bottom of the seat post or buy a shorter one.

Unless you're going to raise the bars or like a really aggressive riding position I cannot see how people over 5 feet 6 are managing to ride one of these.

Overall really impressed for the price, will probably be able to sell it on ebay for similar money in a year or two!
dip86
25 May 16 #157
Feels great tbh - more of a racing position which I don't mind.

Miles smoother and stiffer than my tesco carnaby bike that I got via Hukd. Might try and switch over the gear levers from the tesco bike though as they are shimano claris and just feel and work a bit nicer than the ones on the triban.
Farhan007
25 May 16 #158

so mine arrived today , oh its a small looking bike . had to raise the seat a good chunk and found that the handbars cant be raised any higher than they already are , just debating now to keep or send back , and as mentioned in other posts i am 5.10 so the riding position is a little aggressive but nothing too major , not as bad as i was expecting in all fairness , i think the real problem here is like many others i have been riding sit up and beg mountain bikes for that many years this is a bit of a shock to the system.lol

Just out of interest in the real world does anyone know what bike is an equivalent to this and how much would it cost?

Its a keeper at this price and look forward to a good ride out on it , i will be part of the" over sized man on their small bike club".lol..

What height have you got the saddle at? I ask because at its lowest there is still about 10cm of seat post showing. I'm going to get it cut down by about 10cm so the seat goes right down but then the max height will be about 10cm which is where it is now. Just trying to work out how long the bike will last my son before he outgrows it.

GAVINLEWISHUKD
29 May 16 #197
If you are having to chop some off the bike is currently too big. Working out how big it will go (presuming normal body to leg ratio) then set the seat to max height and with the crank on its lowest position measure the distance. Now take an inch off that and that will probably give you a good idea of inside leg measurement.
hemanpaul87
29 May 16 #198
