For those who don't know: you can use apps such as Maps.me from android play store with free unlimited world maps updates. There is also an app from nokia with everything free (do not remember the name). Both work offline. Both can be used with your new or old smartphone. Both cost 0.

Never used a standalone satnav. Surprised no-one mentioned Sygic app. I have tried all free and paid sat nav apps and Sygic wins hands down all day. Google maps is getting better, especially now with off-line navigation however it still can't touch Sygic which uses Tom Tom maps. I think it's the cheapest access to Tom Tom you can get, £16.50 for Europe with free lifetime updates and free heads up display (directions on windscreen at night). Only problem I've found with Sygic is the inability to distinguish minor roads, it has taken me up a few dirt tracks, though that is probably true of all satnavs.

A satnav device without an Internet connection is useless these days. If you have a smart phone, install Tom Tom Go and buy three years subscription. It does not even consume much data for traffic updates. You get the best of both worlds.

I have had this one for a long time and updates have been easy
good sat nav for the prive in my opinion heat added as i paid nearly £100 i think when i first bought it

I would have bought another tomtom but got annoyed that they kept charging a hefty fee for updates for my old 730 when giving free updates for cheap models like this one. I now just use google maps but prefer tomtom as Google is quite unreliable with traffic in London and has lots of incorrect road routings here too.

Bought this sat nav a few weeks ago for £80, needed it because I drive for a living and my other one packed up. Anyway, it's proven to be a nice acquisition. For £65 I'd recommend.

The new tomtom software is just soooo dumbed down that it's just unusable.. hence I returned mine and just downloaded new maps for my old tomtom from piratebay..

If your on the phone a lot then you will have hands free in your car meaning the phone is still useable as a navigation device.
I've tried standalones as well as all the other apps, HERE, Waze, tomTom etc...and still go back to Google maps every time. Uses very little data and nothing beats Googles search engine for easy destination finding. I rarely use postcodes or full addresses for businesses, just search for the name of the business and it finds it.

Great price. Far better than any smartphone as a sat nav. If you are on the phone a lot for work or are popular a smartphone is useless as a navigation device.

What device are you running Here on? Nokia maps was faultless on my old Nokia N8 but Here maps on my 1020 has got me in to all sorts of scrapes. My route optimization setting is set to Balanced with all options set to yes (Highways etc), and yet it takes us down the smallest of B roads when you've got a dual carriageway running right next to it!.

Worst TomTom Sat Nav ever !!
If you try and update the maps online it corrupts the Firmware and goes into an 'unrecoverable' boot loop !!
Took me ages arguing with TomTom that their online software update screwed it up !
Which they confirmed it had and replaced it with a Refurb !....which now has a power problem !

Tomtom Go on smartphones £15 a year £35 three years. In my opinion if you buy a dedicated GPS unit, 3 years later it will become so obsolete and you throw it away anyway. Depends on your phone, the tomtom go on your phone could be much more responsive and higher picture quality too!

yeah like everyone else, i can't praise HERE maps enough. The speed limit data is correct for journeys i have travelled, and all maps can be taken offline which is really good for those who dont have a lot of mobile data.
Only problem that I've encountered, that probably wont be an issue to most, is that HERE maps do not have a map for Japan, I beleive mainly due to the low share of windows phone users in Japan.

This is only on Windows Phone. Support is continuing on iOS and Android.
Personally I'm a massive fan of Here Maps. Their actual navaigation may not be class leading compared to Google Maps or Waze but having built in speed limit data and the ability to download maps for use offline is extremely useful. Used it for a trip from UK to Switzerland over easter and it didn't miss a beat. Unless you don't have a smartphone I can't see any need for a dedicated GPS these days.

Anyone know about using a TMC receiver to get traffic updates into this TomTom?
I have one of these.
I have had one for 5 years or more now and compared to something like Waze they are hit and miss.
1) For whatever reason I struggle to pick up a transmission on my daily drive to and from work of about 35 miles. However this does seem to be a problem mainly for the region where I live (NG13) as I have been on many UK holidays/trips and can pick up a signal in minutes typically if elsewhere.
2) It only highlights the big issues. So road closures yes and long standing roadworks that cause you to slow down more than usual but if you have a broken down vehicle blocking 1 lane on a dual carriageway for instance then no report.
I have been using Waze on my phone for the past year or so sometimes alongside my Tom Tom for the bigger journeys but also I have speed cameras loaded onto my Tom Tom and the Waze is far better for covering issues. I know the routing can be a bit 'interesting' at times but for highlighting issues ahead of you it is loads better.
As I say I have a lot older version but with regard to the information it is receiving I have no reason to think I am getting any better or worse information than that of one bought today.

Nokia Here maps is great for off roaders' who like the challenge of hill climbs and mountain peaks. Awful app....

given 1 years map update on my original would cost more than this. tempted until saw a comparison with my existing go 630( kindly done by an Amazon reviewer), maps not as clear and can't see into the distance abd no travel via function on start 25 , so although free lifetime maps tempting I'll give it a miss. end up doing map update on my existing one or purchasing comparable one with lifetime map updates

For the price can't complain given its got lifetime map updates. I've got go 630 , without lifetime maps.
