I bought this about 5 years ago on PC, and in that time have played it for hundreds of hours. Well worth a try, although gamepad controls could make it trickier to dig and build accurately.
Not sure how many more big updates the developers have planned, but they have supported it for 5 years to their credit. As Moonmonkeys pointed out just last week for PC they put out an update adding controller support, and more support for wiring, mechanisms etc. (not sure when the console versions are getting that though).

1.3.1 was only released about a week or so ago. I'd like the same thing to happen to Starbound at some point, I'm a console neanderthal that can't cope with keyboard controls :disappointed:

Really? That's great, haven't played the PC version in a really long time but assumed it wouldn't get pad support.

Gamepad is supported on PC now as of version 1.3.1
I used to play this on PS4 and the controls are fine, I must admit though I prefer the PC version as there's an awful lot more content.
PS4 pad works well on the PC version in my opinion.

How does this control with a gamepad? I have it on android and pc but always felt I would have more fun with a gamepad but it isn't supported on either.
