Great speakers, don't think they've been sub £100 before? Limited stock with around 17 in stock around the country, well worth it if any of those are local to you though! Especially when you consider they come with wall mounts etc too.
States *some* may be ex display/refurb etc so i'd say you'd be best of calling them first. (They do extra warranty/supercare for £9.99 by the looks though if that's a worry)

You've gotta be kidding right? Tannoy ate a prestigious British company, with some manufacturing still in the UK. These will likely be made in China but aren't most consumer goods?

Sony aren't a 'premium' manufacturer (whatever that is) when it comes to quality audio. As mentioned earlier Kef are high end and I would also place Tannoy well above Sony when it comes to speakers!

Are they wireless or do you need to channel out walls, or hide behind coving?

They revise them every year, adding an X or somesuch to the model number, it's still the same rubbish though, i mean can't fault it for the price, but if you're wiring up a surround system, make some effort!

taking into account their size and power, what other speakers would you recommend that have a similar footprint and power capability?

Ok as entry level speakers, but I got Sony ones for a similar price, much better quality. So you can get premium manufacturers for this money.

Walk away. Here in Loughborough you can get a premium brand like Sony, Samsung, Philips for a bit more. Then you know what you are getting unlike this cheap Chinese knock off.

You need to do some googling of facts, I believe the massive Chinese firm onkyo, bought tannoy, and use the name to sell cheap audio. Safer with a Sony!

I'd second that. paid £100 for the sub alone a couple of years back which is worth every penny. Can't comment on the speakers though. Worth phoning the store in advance as they can normally order them in.

I looked at these but thought they looked dated, and as though they have a webcam built into the top of them!
I went for the Tannoy TFX 5.1, and can vouch for them, they're excellent!

Damn, I just got hold of some speakers - I've got a £20 Richer Sounds voucher that it looks like I'm never gonna get to use!
Don't trust the likes of the BBC, they tell lies, and Wikipedia can be edited by anyone
Tannoy are a cheap chinese knock off brand, just like Onkyo, they just stole their brand name from Public address systems we use in the uk.
They also skin pigs to make the speaker cones.

I bought these for £199 a few years ago and they've been absolutely brilliant for that price nevermind this latest price. Very surprisingly good quality build and sound. Better than the likes of Sony and Samsung who can't make decent speakers. Get some bought even if they're 200 miles away!

I bought these along with a DENON AVRX520BT from Richer Sounds just after Xmas, and have it all linked up to a projector. This is my first surround sound set up being used in a 16 feet by 14 feet space. The sound is awesome and has made watching movies at home a true Cinema experience. At this price I would thoroughly recommend the speakers, they really feel like good quality to when you take them out of the box, have a heavy feel that makes you believe them to be well made.

Cold, steer clear of unknown brands like this and Onkyo (ah that joke takes me back).

I wouldn't say they're premium audio, and what do you mean by Japanese quality?. I doubt very much every Sony AV product is made in Japan with 100% Japanese parts, likely its just assembled. Majority of components likely from China, South Korea, Taiwan..etc. Anyway, Sony is mid range.
DudleyGuy
5 May 161#50
You must have a fake Sony, they are Japanese quality, premium audio!

Great deal...I remember selling these in a retail store for more than £400 originally, when they were called the FX5.1 . The tweeters are especially good. Sub wasn't amazing though. They used to come with wall brackets too.
Always thought they were made in China though.
Tannoy themselves still appear to be going strong, with their awesome Dual Concentric Prestige and Kingdom lines. I'd certainly buy these over Sonys and on a par with the entry level Kefs.

FYI - Anyone wanting to wall mount these, but want to angle them (the brackets included are L shaped so impractical) I have found these work well: Brateck Dual Mount Speaker Brackets - Only slight downside is they are under the speaker - but nothing can be done about that thanks to Tannoy's bottom screw hole!
