This is an awesome lens with a low aperture (2.8) and vibration control built in (be wary of the cheaper non VC version). I bought one a few years ago for over £300 and have been using it ever since with me Canon 650D, the pictures that it takes are great!

Seems like a good price , might be worth mentioning its Canon Fit only,
Excellent piece of glass for the money! I paid around this for a used one 3 or 4 years ago and it's been my go to lens ever since. I've no need for the improved IQ of the comparable Canon lens and the massive price hike, so this suits me perfectly!
At this price it MUST be a price match so hurry!

take a series of pics some time apart, join them together in a program
some cameras can do it internally, others may need either an app or an external intervalometer device etc

It's posts like this that make me wish I brought a Canon, but the Sony A65 was too feature-rific for me to pass up, the addition of GPS and 24.1MP shots, and continuous autofocus was, at the time, a better value camera than anything Canon was offering in my price range. The downside is places like Amazon do not do sales on Sony compatible lenses, which is annoying. I have a Tamron AF 18-270mm F/3.5 -6.3 Di II VC PZD, and it is just an epic lens, I never use anything else, but I am after a fast aperture lens such as this one for portraiture, but finding it at a decent price is hard. Also would love a wide angle lens.

Nowt wrong with a sony a65. Use camerapricebuster for best new lens prices - or try London Camera exchange or ebay for used.
I would recommend the sony 16-50 2.8 which can be had on ebay for around £200. Wide angle, then sony 11-18. I have both. 11-18 shot here or 16-50 shot here

Amazon normally stock a wide range of a-mount lenses..the 17-50 tamron can be had for £130-170 used on ebay.I managed to get one with a faulty zoom lock for £80!
The Sony 50mm f1.8 isnt bad for around £80 new.No zoom I know!
Have a look at http://www.dyxum.com/index.asp. Lots of old minolta lenses .. Some good some not so.

Has any tried photographing night skies with this? Was looking at getting the samyang 14mm f2.8, which i have used with great success. This appears to offer far more options (focal length) with only the slight restriction of it being 17mm as opposed to 14mm.
Any advice welcome (I am a beginner/intermediate)

But surely that is only true if you have the camera mounted on a tripod or the camera body itself has VC? Otherwise any small movement could affect the sharpness of the picture?

as long as shutter speed is fast enough then you can do fine with no VC
VC is basically a movement made by the camera system to counter your own movements so i guess the less overall movement needs less shutter speed
