Just received this email via my local authority mailing list informing me of a subsidised offer on a bike bunker for £120. The bike bunker described in the email is I think identical to a £499.99 one I found via google.

Dear Me,
Do you own bikes which would benefit from a secure, dry and tidy place to be stored outside? Ealing Council has secured funding to subsidise a small number of home ‘bike bunkers’ for Ealing residents which can comfortably hold two adult bikes and one folding or child’s bike.
The bunker needs to be sited to the rear or to the side of your property and would be bolted to the floor. It measures approximately 2m by 0.9m (6ft x3ft) and is painted in a garden friendly colour.
All you have to pay is £120 inclusive of VAT and then our supplier will arrange with you a suitable date for installation.
In order to be considered for a bike bunker, please complete and submit your application using the following link https://www.research.net/r/HPGB89Z by the 22 May 2016.
We will be in touch if you have been successful to arrange an initial site visit to make sure it will be possible to install at your property

It's probably true. Someone once told me that locks only stop honest men from stealing - and by that he meant spontaneous theft. If hundreds of these are fitted in an area their weakness will be found and they will be targetted like you had a "bike worth stealing" sign on your house.

Maybe I'm missing the point but surely the fact the bike is not on show confers some protection. A scum bag would have to break into every bunker in the hope of finding the bike they want with the risk of having a skilfully aimed Joe Blow pump rammed in their face.... surely anything that adds an extra layer to bike security is a good thing?

I'd find out if my bike insurance/home insurance would cover the bike being stolen from one of these before parting with any cash.

Agreed, for £500 I would take an Asgard any day of the week, not least of all for the protected padlock housing. Had the 3 bike one for a couple of years now and its a worthwhile investment.

As a tax payer and resident in Birmingham I'm happy for this type of investment - anything to get people out of cars is a good thing.

I bought one of these at £400 and spent the day assembling it. So installed for £120 is amazing.
I used a ground anchor inside too for security but shed works well for keeping bike dry and opportunist thieves out.

It may be a very nice idea if you're eligible but the use of public funds is highly questionable. They gave away the first tranche many months ago and I've only seen two since - and one of them was in a bike shop. The owner of the other one was using it on a leisure ride outside of the city and couldn't believe his luck when they gave him one.
The idea that it'll take thousands of cars off the road and Brummies will suddenly take to their free bikes is naive at best. It's not even a 'bike friendly' city to cycle in. Spend the money on proper (segregated) bike routes first if you must: most people can pull together a few quid for a working bike but they can't redesign the roads!
Even Comrade Corbyn seems to have left his bike at home these days!

Great price. It won't just prevent stealing it will stop your bike getting hammered by the harsh weather, I left my outside over the winter (nowhere else to put it) and now its a total mess. Wish they had a similar scheme in Warwickshire!

In decent parts of the country (ie not London) few people have to go to such extreme measures to secure a bike.
I regularly see unlocked bikes parked outside our local shop, but then I'm not living in a Socialist utopia.
