I urge any prospective buyer to read their vicious returns policy. It's a 'simplified minefield' - you're not allowed too many wrong steps.

In other words, you can unpack it (and consider its mediocre aesthetics), but the moment you've plugged it in to set up and yes...evaluate its image quality, you're stuffed.

They will do anything imaginable to stop you from returning the tv if you, for whatever reason and fully within your rights, decide to change your mind. They wanted to retain 45% of the tv's price in my case, so I've had to put mine on eBay as a result. Needless to say, I won't be buying from them ever again.

Please consider alternative purchasing sources carefully if you'd rather avoid a mighty headache no to mention financial loss.

Re: the laggy comment

Disable Sony shelf and Sony select apps and turn off notifications for the apps

Install advanced task killer pro
Install SD maid pro
Install sideload launcher by chain fire
Turn off wireless if not using it
Turn off Bluetooth
Turn on developer mode and change animations to 0.5

Helps a lot

I wouldn't know much about the 43inch models, However I purchased the 49inch 8005CB two weeks ago from Tesco Direct and cannot fault it at all. The picture quality is crisp, terrific user interface and the colours are second to none. Blurriness, grain and flickering is certainly not an issue, Just played Mad Max on BR via PS4 and it looks great to me!

[i] have been using this for a few weeks now and I notice the dirty screen effect. Does anyone have a solutionfor this
KayeeEn
18 May 16 #149
The problem is this - the picture (dark scenes, black borders etc) is acceptable in relatively strong natural daylight. This screen is very reflective. But once you watch in the evening, in an average lit room (60 - 100w), you can't help notice that in scenes where it should be dark, there's a greyish black tint / shimmer. A bit like someone's got the brightness turned up more than they should. I keep going back to the advanced contrast blurb on their marketing for this set.

There's also I think what they call DSE - dirty screen effect, where it's noticeable in light solid colours and especially when the shot is panning. Check ITV when the scroll now, next, then at the bottom half of the screen. You might even notice it when wtahcing football for example.

Your TV must be faulty.
My TV has blacks that are too black if anything.
It needs a fair bit of tweaking to find a good setting that shows the detail in dark areas.
KayeeEn
15 May 16 #147
Oh, and anyone else think their screen is dirty?

Something just isn't right with my set, but due to AO's awkard returns policy, I'm nervous getting touch with them. Won't be using or recommending them to anyone for this point alone.
KayeeEn
15 May 16 #146
Well, I've unpacked mine again to give it another whirl. No matter what settings I try, I just cannot get the blacks to be how it should be. Can't believe how crap this TV is - really think I've have done the same, if not better, with a budget panel!

Comparing to my Sony 37" from a few years ago, the blacks on which I didn't find great (my LG 42LN543V was better), this 49x8005 is even worse. Currently watching the Queen's 90th on ITV. Scenes with dark backgrounds are grey. This is under normal lighting conditions. I don't expect it to be black, but should be darker tan what it is. So much for their advance contrast - I'd have probably been happier with the recent Argos / Philips offering!

The black levels on this set are a bit extreme at first, took a bit of playing around to get the detail back.

Finding a balance between crushed blacks and detail in dark scenes is a bit tricky.

Ended up disabling most of the black/contrast options, the most annoying setting was the dynamic contrast which is constantly being adjusted and is very distracting when switching from light and dark scenes.

Still well worth the money.

2160p is 4k. True/native 4k is 4096 x 2160, but 3860 x 2160 has been adopted.

I think 2K refers to 1080p content.

I saw the picture on the "Sony Bravia KD43X83 LED 4K" and the picture quality is impressive for the price. However I can't work out the difference between the models. E.G. KD49X8005CBU / KD43X83 / KDL43W80 (apart from screen size obviously and the KDL is a 3D TV. Are they all the same screen technology and series??

I can't seem to get round the android / YouView issues. Again, what is the root cause, poor programming or the processor not handling the updates / android software? Not sure it's worth it, "you get what you pay for" comes to mind.

The black level on my set is very good. In fact probably too good, I can't see much but black in dark scenes.

The major issue for me is the reflection, watching stuff like GoT is a very challenging/near impossible in strong daylight.

For the price I'm enjoying this TV very much. Having Plex and YouTube is a Godsent. Colour, SD upscaling excellent and YouTube quality are outstanding.

Oh the colours

Just buy using a credit card. When you come to return it and they refuse to give you your money back, have the credit card company reverse the transaction. AO only play this game because they know enough people will give up and take the hit, allowing them to cover the total cost of all returns.

Here's the relevant text from MSE:

If the retailer isn't playing ball it may be easier to go to your card provider

If you’re struggling to get a retailer to listen to the fact you have consumer rights, then in some circumstances, assuming you’re eligible, claiming from the credit card company under Section 75 can prove easier. There are a number of reasons for this:

Credit card companies have deeper pockets.
If you’re claiming something substantial from a small firm, it may fight tooth and nail and force you to go to court to get redress, as it can’t afford to pay out so will make it difficult for you to get your money back. Yet credit card companies are huge beasts, and have deeper pockets so this is less of an issue.
If the credit card firm turns you down, you can go to the Ombudsman, not court.
This is an important difference. First the Financial Ombudsman Service is free, while even in the small claims court you pay a fee, which is only returned if you win.
More importantly, the court only looks at the law, while the Ombudsman looks at:

The law, or
Standard industry practice, or
Whether you've been treated fairly and reasonably
The last one especially gives you extra hope if your case falls foul of the letter of the law, but your treatment hasn’t been right.

LG 42LN543V (or 540V)

Not 4k or anything. Not perfect, as there are dimming issues when dynamic contrast is enabled, but definitely better than this POS in my opinion even when off. Now that's a statement. The viewing experience is like night and day.

Not a fault, I own the Sony KDL-42W829B...

http://www.expertreviews.co.uk/tvs-entertainment/tvs/53462/sony-bravia-kdl-50w829b-review-55in-now-630-on-amazon-today

Extract ....
"The user interface takes something of a toll on startup times, with the TV being all but unresponsive for the first 30 seconds after switching on from standby. This is fine if you remembered to set the channel or input when you last turned it off, but it's frustrating when you want to watch a Blu-ray or play a game, but can't switch inputs from another endless repeat of Top Gear on Dave for half a minute"

...it's made me quite reticent to buy a Sony again....hence asking the question - so, again...for those who have this TV, are you able to switch between sources immediately after power on?

Would hate to want to return this item after opening the box- ".......However, if you have used it beyond this, this may have a knock on effect on our ability to sell it to someone else and so where the value of the product is reduced by your use we may only make a partial refund (equal such reduced value) or subsequently charge you for the reduction in value. "

This would DEFINITLY envolve a quibble & having to quote the "The Consumer Contracts Regulations" formally distance selling regs" on wanting to RETURN.

If you want a hassle a free life AVOID. go to JLP, Costco or amazon.co.uk (fullfilled by amazon).

Anyone watching Attenborough at 90 on BBC One at the moment?

I am on the LG and the blacks when they show the audience is what I expect. I would imagine on the Sony which I've packed away for now, those dark areas will be tinged with a hint of grey? Also notice that when they show clips with black borderes, I would expect those borders to be nearly as dark as the black bezel.

You need more?
UK TV is broadcast at 50Hz so the TV is quadroupling the same frame 4 times to get this magical 200Hz rate. Often this image processing makes things look worse than better. fast action sports may benefit but don't get sucked into the numbers game. More Hz isn't a measurable reference when all the sources are typically at 50 or 60Hz. Some TV's may make a decent job (like this one) but 200Hz is plenty..... and the 600Hz you see from Panasonic are a bit of a technical swiz of sorts as only elements of the image are processed at 600Hz.
Hot deal as far as I can see.
Minstadave to AStonedRaichu

Stupidly high refresh rates are largely nonsense, just gives that weird overly fluid motion effect. The TV is simply guessing the information for each frame above your source.

So if you have had 6 android phones you have never:

Rooted
Installed TWRP/Clockwork
Installed xposed
Used Greenify/Amplify to hibernate/disable system apps

This is just a TV with an androlid OS built in as you quite correctly stated

So lets forget the TV part for a minute, i have an LG G4 running CM13

I get five and a half hours on screen time and a 3 day average battery life

Any product i own that has Android on it i tweak (to get the best out of Android)

That theory applies here, to get the best out of the OS it needs a little tweaking

Hell on XDA there is a guy who can fastboot/adb into his Sony Android TV - root wont be far off hopefully (then this set will really shine)

And as regards disabling wifi you IMO you need your head testing if you are using wifi (to stream kodi etc)

Under sale of goods act they have to have it back if faulty. If you paid by CREDIT card tell them you will seek a refund from your card company. That will do it!
"Section 75 covers card refund for faulty goods
Section 75 is fantastic protection. It means if you order something and if the retailer goes kaput, you can still claim your money back from the credit card provider (even if you've since closed your credit card account).

Section 75 applies to most, but not all, credit card agreements. Credit cards are the main area covered, but the law also applies to store cards, store instalment credit and some car finance agreements (though not hire purchase).

Plus, even if the problem is just non-delivery or faulty goods, you have exactly the same rights from the credit provider as from the retailer, flight company or supplier"

Take into consideration that HDR panels will be the norm for new 2016 TV's , but will cost you around £1000 for a basic HDR model and there is very little content that has HDR at this time , For the price of £459 for this panel ! id say its a brilliant deal.

You have a great set that will keep you going easily for a good few years at least unless you are so keen for 4k material. The picture quality on the w829 is nothing short of beautiful. Best screen for watching football, playing games. And just in general HD content.

I bought this TV from amazon warehouse - no complaints here - great TV, packed full of features, no problems with Android OS (it auto updates once connected on first launch), no problems with PS4. Good clarity, deep contrast and crisp 4k!

Motion could be slightly better for football (but absolutely fine on most counts) and great for the price.
Recommended TV!

Can you get the HDR update for this model?
djames108
8 May 16 #58
the TV works fine....... as for the updates stopping eventually, this won't affect the operation of the tv. the only pitfall may be newer apps may not work as the android version becomes more and more dated. saying that however android 4.4 still works very well and is compatible with most apps and that's ancient now so I dont forsee a problem.

If you are that worried though then just don't buy it.....it's very simple. get a bog standard TV and buy an android box. same issue there though with updates so no way round it if you want a smart devicr
djames108
8 May 16 #57
or just go straight on the play store seach kodi and install......as easy as installing any other app.

this is an excellent TV and the android is fantastic, not the fastest system in the world but it's not exactly a high end phone or tablet.

it does the job perfectly well

We're happy for you to unpack the item and inspect it properly, however, if you've used or installed it, we will only make a partial refund to cover the loss in value of the product. Please note, this could be up to 50% of the price of the item

Disable Sony shelf and Sony select apps and turn off notifications for the apps

Install advanced task killer pro
Install SD maid pro
Install sideload launcher by chain fire
Turn off wireless if not using it
Turn off Bluetooth
Turn on developer mode and change animations to 0.5

Helps a lot

Hmm that sounds like a good reason to not incorporate an OS into a TV!
spannerzone to gap30
8 May 16 2 #54
Don't know how you came to that conclusion - I've had About 6 Android phones, so I do have an idea, the regular updates, the bugs, the quirks and so on. I'd be concerned that to get my TV to work properly I'd have to frigg about with the OS. Sure a smart TV sounds good in principle and especially if the smart features don't actually stop the basic premise of a TV from working but sounds like Android on this can bork the day to day functionality of the TV.

I'd expect a smart TV to not get software support after a period of time for the apps, but it does concern me when the basic TV features can be affected too and a load of tweaks need applying to get over the shortcomings. I mean turning off wifi and bluetooth? that's a feature you may want so seems nuts it needs disabling to get the thing to work. Also Sony almost certainly won't provide updates after a couple of years so do most of the nice smart features fizzle out? this seems to happen to almost all smart TV's and blu ray players.

I'm sure image quality is subjective to a cetain degree, but I think there's some mes-leading advertising here with Sony.

I'm experiencing the kind of rubbish contrast as shown to the left (probably not as bad, but you get my point), but expected something closer to that shown on the right

I'm glad you're enjoying your unit andrewb366.

However, I just cannot say the same with mine, maybe I have a faulty unit - I don't know. But as far as I'm concerned, the way the unit deals with blacks in normal daylight just isn't good enough compared to my 42 LG (which is also an IPS panel). So if you were to watch a film with top and bottom borders now, the LG is perfect black, but with this Sony, there's a greyish tint to it no matter what settings you apply. I also find it strange that ifyou move off centre to say 45 degrees to the right, the whites on the screen becomes dullish grey (and other colours for that matter) - like if you applied a grey tint; not normal for an IPS panel I think?

I wonder if there's a panel lottery with these? When was your unit produced?

See, to me, I thought I bought a premium brand, but I feel it is some budget 4k no brand TV I'm using!

I'm at a loss with AO, as I have previously mentioned, that if I were to report this and the powering on issues as faults, they may they find 'nothing wrong' and charge me God knows what .....

KayeeEn
8 May 16 3 #25
Not if you have used the product though and are not happy with it. Only applies if sealed, or strangely enough if only unpacked but not used.
qwerta369
8 May 16 3 #20
Is this the model that's received loads of complaints on the other thread, and aren't AO the firm who illegally charge you 45% to return an item you legitimately return within 14 days of purchase?
andrewb366 to qwerta369
8 May 16 1 #23
This model has received a feedback rating of 4.5/5 on Tesco Direct, AO and Co-Operative electronics. I also have one myself and like I have said previously I cannot fault the TV at all.

With regards to AO.com I have never purchased anything from the site although as far as I know they implement a 14 days free of charge returns policy if you are not 100% with the product. The site is reliable and offer a great deal on a range of electrical goods which is why they were rated the top online retailer of July 2015 by Which.

8 May 16 #15
As far as I can tell, Sony don't even make this TV in 43", so not sure how the picture can be bad? They do do a 43" in the x83 series (kd43x8305), but that is a different model. Even then, the picture is excellent, and is rated at 900hz rather than the 200hz of this 49 incher.
There are lots of reported issues with the android software of Sony TV's, but picture quality is as good, and probably better than any of their rivals.
fishmaster to marcjones73
8 May 16 1 #17
Initially and well for quite some time the Android problems ruined these TVs, they now have a reputation and even if people don't know of the reputation for problems, they probably haven't sold as well as they should and are heavily discounted now, that's my theory anyway

The most crucial function of a TV is to function as a TV, this was broken for quite some time on Sony Android based models, video and audio out of sync, black screens and other issues. Shot them self in the foot using Android really. If you want a stable system you never use Android and I speak as an Android user.
