I've had mine for about six months now, and regularly use it for gaming (PS4 and Xbox One). It's the best TV I've seen for gaming - really rich colours and very fast. Select the'Game' preset to drop the lag right down and give excellent results, without the need for any complicated meddling with settings. Enjoy!

I am yet to play some PS4 through it but will update soon. HD TV and blu rays look amazing! very nice picture indeed.

Just ordered from John Lewis for £849 but have a price match email for £799 with Richer Sounds.
Looking for a compatible set of 3d glasses that work with this, any recommendations?
edit.. its getting delivered on Wednesday so I will compare it with my Panny 50ST30 Plasma.

Just received mine today. Picture is great straight out of the box, haven't had time to really experiment yet, just doing the update.
Out of interest what setting did you tweak?

3 Jun 16#60
I have had mine 3 days now and it is a very good picture after changing a few settings, being my first smart tv it is really impressive and the responsiveness has been way better than expected after reading some reviews. The small remote is very handy and it is the only one I have used.

In that case how does RS policy on replacements differ?

That's direct from JL website.

31 May 16#50
At John Lewis if the TV is out of economical repair then we will offer you the value of which the TV is now worth. Say in 3 years time it's out of economical repair then we will look at TVs of the same specification then offers that amount towards a replacement. You can also pay more on top if you want a better TV. So you won't get the full value towards a new TV you will get the value of what's your TV is worth towards a new one. Get me?
tom6195
31 May 16#49
Oh I see is that Richer Sounds policy? Do you know if JL is any different?
KingMidas
31 May 16#48
It's all on their website mate.
"We're covering the product to remain in working order for the life of that guarantee – in other words against manufacturing defect causing breakdown. If the product's used in the prescribed way and it breaks down, our duty is to get the appliance back to working order – and if we can't do that, we'll replace it with the same model, or discuss an alternative with you if that's no longer available."
tom6195
31 May 16#47
Thanks. What about replacement/refund for your tv should it be beyond economical repair?
orelf12
31 May 16#46
I work for John Lewis - as long as it's in stock in your local RS store and John Lewis have it as well then we will price match. Accidental damage for a total of 5 years is £70.
KingMidas
31 May 16#45
That's interesting from RS website.
• Offer you free routine servicing and maintenance checks as often as you want
KingMidas
31 May 16#44
Most of these long TV guarantees are parts and labour (no accidental damage) RS will give you a loan TV if yours needs to be sent away for repair and will collect and return if over 39" in size. Both companies have great feedback regarding their customer service and after care so either way you should be good.
tom6195
31 May 16#43
That's the plan. I just want to establish whose warranty is better then I'm pulling that trigger.
KingMidas
31 May 16#42
Probably not worth the hassle tbh. If it's what you want and you're happy with £799 just buy now and have more time to enjoy the TV.
tom6195
31 May 16#41
What are peoples' thoughts with regards to warranty? What are the differences between the two?
tom6195
31 May 16#40
Can you confirm JL will price match?
tom6195
31 May 16#39
I'm not sure I could, unless I purchased it through the work referral portal at £849 first and then submitted a price match claim after taking delivery providing RS were still selling at £799 in a couple weeks time.
Not sure if it's worth the risk. I'm happy to spend £799 at this point I may just have to flip a coin.
KingMidas
31 May 16#38
Yeah went with RS +1% quidco. If I was in your situation I'd do the same. A cheaper price + an extra years guarantee.
Now if you were able to get a price match with JL at £799 and could deduct your 5% discount off of that then JL all the way. Keep us posted

It will do HDR via uhd blu rays, the firmware update also included hdmi 2.0a support.

The price for this is falling to 'ridiculously tempting' levels now.....
I suspect they are clearing stock for the replacement 55XD8599 which again is not full HDR (but is twice the price) - the new one does, however, have an IPS panel I believe (good viewing angles, blacks not superb), whereas this is VA (worse viewing angles, better blacks)
If you look at the other thread Currys I asked this question as regard to HDR light and there's a very good explanation if you are interested!

Gaming
Our Leo Bodnar input lag tester returned a figure of 35ms from the Sony KD-55X8505 in [Game] mode. Whilst not as responsive as the UHD models from Samsung (this year’s undisputed leader in churning out low-lag televisions), this should still be fast enough for all but the most demanding of twitch gamers.

You can now get 1% Quidco on in store sales at Richer Sounds. Hopefully will pay for the fuel and parking!
Some people are calling it HDR lite, not quite full HDR. Purists probably wouldn't call it HDR as the set wasn't released with the full HDR range. I'm sure someone with more technical knowledge can expand on this.
Challenge RS on false advertising if it truly can't be classed as HDR. I think this is a good deal either way.

Spec sheet is correct for out of the box TV. The latest firmware update will give the TV HDR for Netflix and Amazon Video, it doesn't work with HDR Bluray as it's missing the colour space spec.

I've bought various Hifi equipment from RS over the years and they have always been top notch with their after sales. JL are also very good though, but for an extra year and a cheaper price RS wins for me unless you don't have one local to you.
