To do this you will need to overcome struggles such as hunger, thirst and cold. Build a fire. Build a shelter. Kill animals for meat. Protect yourself from other players. Create alliances with other players and together form a town.
Whatever it takes to survive.
If you are a subscriber to humble bundle, you can recieve an extra 10% off which gives the price of around 4.70 ish.

The players of this game are the most obnoxious conglomeration of human flesh the world has even seen.
If ISIS sponsored a computer game it would be this one.
Or, to be more accurate, it's like going camping in russia but forgetting your equipment.

I had enough of being killed for no reason when i didn't even own any clothes yet... so i switched to a PvE server and now the game is actually fun, with people working together and not trying to kill you.
People had built a whole town on the server I joined... a fiver was a great price for the game !

Another option ( which I have used recently and love) is to join a "fastxp" server so wonton a few minutes you have enough for an automatics rifle etc. It keeps gameplay much more level without spending most of your life online. And you can raid and be raised as normal....lovely stuff.

Starting to love it- built a small house and getting the hang of it now. Bargain price for the fun you can have.

Spawn, last a few minutes and then killed. Its a nightmare but want to keep going for a while. Reminds me of an x-rated Minecraft.

That rare occasion where someone with weird gender hangups also proves themselves to be low of intelligence. Get over it man, you are not your gender.

yeah really!
i started playing two weeks ago now, just me n one friend... we managed to get the jist of what needs to be done after a few hours. now i'm playing with 6 other friends which meane i dont actually have to be on every single day haha
the game is alot of fun! when things go your way.
let it be known though, on the first Thursday of every month, all the servers are wiped so all players start from scratch. thats the best time to start playing otherwise you'll just get destroyed by everyone

I actively choose female when given the choice in games and I'm a male. We should be learning to accept in this world, not divide. If you're campaigning for gender binarism in 2016, you've got a lot to learn.

Thanks op. Just bought. Watching a bit online this bloke seemed to show people sharing a common house- is that something easily done when you fist start so you can meet some other players and have some security?
so far this is a great game to play with friends,
but!! its like having a child... it needs constant care and attention, if you miss it for one day chances are no matter how impenetrable you thought you base was it will have been raided and all your stuff will be gone
its only really playable if you have plenty of time

Really?
A couple of friends seem to LOVE this game and do spend a lot of time on it.
But no way I'd find the time to treat it as "daily maintenance". So if that would mean my stuff forever getting trashed, then I won't be bothering. Which would be a shame as it looks like good fun ...

Basically if you die you lose pretty much everything. You can store a strongbox in a hut, but they're destructable too, and good luck appearing anywhere near them when you die, unless you also have sleeping bags...
...which require animal skins...
which require weapons to kill animals...
which require staying alive for long enough to build tools, collect resources, build a hut, a strongbox, weapons, kill 3-6 animals and fashion a sleeping bag before dying.
GLWT.
Took me a day to make a pair of pants and they were stolen within five minutes.
Took me a week to build a hut, and someone bashed the door in 30 seconds later, killed me, and looted my strongbox.
Took me a month to build a stone hut, with a wooden hut some distance away for backup, and two sleeping bags.
When I logged in the next day my wooden hut was gone, and someone had beaten their way in and changed the locks on my stone hut.
Who could have done such a thing? Someone with the kind of high level weapons you will never ever get, in a world as hostile as rust.
Back to the very beginning of the game - by which I mean I went back to the point before it had been installed on my computer - and I've never looked back since.
It was definitely an interesting experience, but I didn't learn much that I liked about myself or other people.

A little over the top.. They have added quite a few features which help with the early fame of Rust. Hemp plants has made getting cloth fairly easy. The ability to burn tin cans in a fireplace for metal fragments has greatly helped getting your first codelock/sheet metal door when starting out.
But obviously with games like Rust, if you don't put enough time into it someone who has will take your ****.

Don't need to kill animals to make sleeping bags, cloth is everywhere on maps - hemp plants.

It will depend on what server you join, but there are servers for PVE, PVP and also modded servers with death match, mini games and also a Battle Royal mode.

this pvp only, or pve and pvp like others of this genre ?

It's pvp, unless u go to a pve server which doesn't let u kill. But most of the time it is just kill on sight

Yeah, I've just looked into that. Only 78 mins on Record, so have given it a shot.
Am disappointed in the game anyway for the following reasons;
It has no controller support and blocks Gamepad keymappers so you can't create your own support (I play on my PC/Xbone in a comfy armchair and prefer a controller).
The game throws you in and gives you no indication on what to actually do, you're expected to 'google' everything.
You are assigned a permanent gender based upon your Steam ID (a serial number of sorts for Valve's database). I was made to be a white female. Personally I'm uncomfortable with this as I do not wish to be identified as female, even in a video game. I wouldn't complain of what ethnicity I was assigned if I was male for instance as frankly that wouldn't bother me. But for many gender is binary and there really should be a toggle for that.
The game is also a breeding ground for trolls and people whom want to ruin the fun of others. This game is great if you have friends whom already actively play it, but if you're a solo player that just wants to hunt/fish and procedurally fashion yourself a worthy homestead. You may be disappointed.
The only reason I bought it in the first place and the only reason I'd pick it up again at this price is because my little brother plays this religiously and it's nice to chat with and hang out with family you don't live with from time to time

As often is the case, Penny Arcade nailed it (possibly not safe for work).
This is probably the best game I own on steam. friends aren't necessary to play but it makes it a whole lot easier if you have back up. The players are extremely hostile and unfortunately you'll learn the hard way not to trust anyone.
the games been in early access for quite some time but it gets updated weekly. Gary also runs a site with all the work they are doing to the game so you know it's not being left unfinished.
I would recommend this game at its full price so at £5.09 it's an absolute bargain!
