Great bike for the price but it's no lightweight (Weight; 14.7 kg in size M without pedals)
Not that you'd expect lighter for that money.

I am not a fan of the Suntour XCT 80 forks or the weight but it's a good cheap MTB.

Bet lots of people buying these who'd be much better off without those sus forks!

What is better in this price range (for the average dad who bikes with his lad)

Not a bad bike for the price, but as my mate found out when trying to take it around Swinley Forest ... "it's not really the right bike for this sort of thing"!
Tightened up everything before setting off, and about half way around his seat came lose and none of us had the right size spanner with us for it, so he had to cope with a moving seat and make sure it wasn't pointing up when he landed!
Add to this, around 2/3 of the way around his handlebars worked their way lose (fortunately we could tighten these up again, but they were starting to come lose again by the end)
It's quite a heavy beast also! Hard work on the climbs.
Lets be fair, it was cheap and it got around a trail centre (just), so as long as you are not doing that sort of thing week in week out and you just want something to potter around on then go for it - there is no point paying £1k+ if that's all you plan to do. If however, you plan on doing more off-road riding, then it may be worth spending a little more and getting a bike that is meant for that sort of thing!
Heat from me - this bike will make riding far more enjoyable than a £50 BSO, and therefore will likely get far more use!

Nothing I'm aware of - if that's what you plan to do then buy buy buy
Far far better than a £50 BSO - more likely you will keep biking with an okay bike rather than leave it in the garage to rust ... which can only be a good thing!

Agreed - if people plan to stay away from off-roading, or just go on light gravel trails then they may be better served with a high-bred bike rather than a chunky wheeled mountain bike with heavy sprung suss

I ride my wife's 5.3 which is amazing. The only issue was going over the handlebars twice in the first 10minutes of riding until I got used to the brakes. Decathlon bikes are great quality for the money IMO.

People complaining about the weight - can anyone recommend anything <14kg in this price range?
I have maybe only seen one or two, but that fall down massively on the rest of the spec. For this range I'd say weight isn't a big deal compared to quality - that's going to have more hinderance, and btwin are decent quality so

I got mine two days ago. It is worth every penny I payed for it.

Got one a week ago, just taken it back. gears are terrible, really clanky when changing and kept missing. mine was really hard to adjust and wouldn't go into 3rd even after the guy at the shop tried to fix it. Tried another in the store and gearing was similar.
Shame, it was a nice bike otherwise and decathalon themselves seemed great.

Anyone know anything else close to this at a similar price?
