Already have a lightweight asus but battery life is important for me. Nice to be able to get through a days worth of lectures without scrambling for a plug. Libre office was one of the biggest pains when I was using it compatibility wise. Yeah I often use the web versions for onedrive integration when I have to use the public computers, the campus login system doesn't always play nice with office 2013's built in integration

Do these play nice with MS Office through one drive in the browser? Could do with something like this for uni but I need to be able to use word and excel :disappointed:

Does it HAVE to be Word & Excel - could you use the Google apps that are MS Compatible?

I had an HP 14 Chromebook and the Office web suite worked fine, obviously as long as you know the web versions are cut down and not full Office (ie no macros in Excel), which I'm sure you do.

You probably mean Libre Office.
It should work.

Yes - eventually.
Modify the bios with utility from johnlewis.ie, install Gallium OS, install Wine then you can put e.g. Office 2007 on it.
You end up with a Linux laptop that still has ~8hrs battery life while being quick enough. Typing this on one.

I purchased an Acer c720 chromebook about 3 years ago and it is still the most useful device I have in my house, all this despite buying all sorts of tablets and laptops since. It just works, fires up in seconds and has made every other device (including my i7 16gbRAM Lenovo thinkpad ) look slow. Battery is great and I have taken this all around the world and never had an issue. I would imagine this device here is exactly the same and even if others have slightly better specs, anyone who gets this would be more than happy with the performance!

what he said! :-)
i have the C720 and it's a joy! it's robust, lightweight, boots so fast, does everything [i need] it's the most used device in our household now and has ever been! superb.
I've tried different varieties of office suites and for whatever reason most of them have formatting issues when i convert them. Though I do have a couple of non critical assignments I could possibly try googles equivilants on.
You aren't wrong there - they don't get a glowing report...

Which model? Not sure I can get by on an 11" screen.
Anyone have thoughts on how usable an 11" is? Buy, or go for a larger one?

You can at your local library, but they do take a dim view when you watch Game of Thrones at full volume. Joking aside, a good value basic device at a fantastic price.

Standard size on all Chromebooks - doesn't need to be any bigger. All the apps are cloud based - as is the storage essentially.
It's a different way of computing & one which is far superior than Windows in my book...

It doesn't need local storage. It uses Google drive for everything. Thats how Chrome books work

I bought 16 of these for students to use at school... Fantastic for under £100. Runs Chrome browser really quick, boots up in seconds, 7+ hour battery life. Really can't fault it.
