While olive oil is healthier when used as a dressing in it's natural state. When heated it becomes carcinogenic. So should never be used for frying as it has a very low smoking point.

Why would you say that? I have always cooked with olive oil. It is healthier and tastier that vegetable, sunflower or rapeseed oil. I have a light olive oil for frying an egg or omelette or whatever. And the heavier more premium olive oil gets used for making roast potatoes.

What? Almost every Mediterranean dish is cooked with olive oil - just don't fry to extreme temperatures with it like frying.

Just popped into Morrisons this afternoon and saw 2x1.2m olive trees for £20. Absolute steal at that price and even larger ones at 2f£30.

I have several olive trees down here in sunny Gosport (Portsmouth area) and they have survived - and in fact, thrived for 3-4 years in the ground in the garden. Having started off as 1.4m+pot when I first bought them they are now over 7ft tall!
They'll certainly be fine outdoors/in ground in milder parts of the UK.

olea europea is only safe down to minus 10 or so. Will you get the odd olive? maybe in a good year but in the uk its really just an ornamental.

I live just outside Manchester and have two olive trees I got a couple of years ago when Ikea were clearing them out. Have so far survived two winters outside in pots in a sheltered location out of the prevailing wind (and rain, what with it being Manchester). I've got a greenhouse I can move them into but was told, for those that don't, when it gets really cold you can wrap some horticultural fleece, bubble wrap or similar loosely around the top till it warms up a bit again.
