Do you join the motorway from a standstill? I used to have a car with almost half this power without issue. Lots of power is rarely required (by drivers that are paying attention to what they're supposed to be doing).

Yeah, I knew I was setting myself up for that comment! Funnily enough I'm not too "nervous" to cycle the 30 mile round trip to work.

That comment says a lot about your character. My car is a tool to get to work, it beats cycling...not a dick extension.

28 May 16 #109
Ok, so in driving a 300bhp car I'm a nervous driver, whereas grown men driving little shopping carts is fine. Thanks for clarifying.

28 May 16 #108
He quite evidently didn't understand the point that my little 1.2 litre 86bhp i10 has no problems at roundabouts at all unlike him driving his Dad's 81bhp Jazz. I guess he needs mega horsepower just to pull out at roundabouts.
Dannyrobbo
28 May 16 1 #107
Why would you lack any confidence when it would go just fine in first gear at a junction? whatever car I've ever drove I would never feel like this... Though I'm not a nervous driver.
skdotcom
27 May 16 #106
Mnehh. 86bhp. Nice. I am being sarcastic of course.

User ignore "click".
smiler03
27 May 16 #105
I can imagine a cyclist lacking confidence at a roundabout. This car has a first gear, an accelerator and a clutch. If you can't use those properly, then you're a poor driver,

I drive an i10 with 86bhp and frequently pull alongside much more powerful cars at roundabouts. I'll pull out when the way is clear and be across the roundabout before the person in a very powerful car alongside me has even spotted the opportunity to go, or they lack the confidence and probably have no idea how to accelerate quickly.

Small engined cars are great fun to drive around cities simply because they are much more agile. It's not the power that's ever lacking, it's the driver's lack of skill.
skdotcom
27 May 16 #104
I didn't say that.

I was saying the performance of this car means you will lack confidence pulling out at roundabouts. But I haven't driven it to so cant say with certainty (but how many people on this thread have actually driven this car?). I can only compare to my fathers 81bhp Honda Jazz which I assume would give similar performance.
Dannyrobbo
27 May 16 1 #103
Seriously, you think that this car would struggle at pulling out on a roundabout? There is more to car design than the engine. The low gearing will ensure enough power to pull out just fine. Then you get to your speed whenever you get there. It's preference but I assure you this car will not struggle at a junction if you can drive.

Audi S4 not A4. Its a 3.0 petrol 354bhp. The Skoda VRS Diesel is the same engine as the fastest Audi 2.0 Diesel, which from memory is about 190bhp. It is a pointless comparison, that was my point! He is a confused Skoda driver making comments based on ignorance. If he is stupid enough to think his Skoda is as fast as an Audi twice the price with almost twice the power, how can I trust any comment made by him that suggests the ride, handling and quality is the same.
I accept that VAG cars share components but that is where most of the comparisons end. They are all designed by different teams to different budgets and for different target markets. I think the brief for Skoda is to make them all just that little but ugly!
Anyway, the main point is, this Seat looks like a good deal. But it isnt an Audi A1 or a Skoda Fabia, and it isn't meant to be.
smiler03
26 May 16 #99
Well your friend may well be right. Firstly what does "as fast" mean? 0-60 and/or top speed? Are you comparing his diesel against a petrol engine?

There are several engine derivatives for both the Audi S4 diesel and the Octavia vRS diesel.

Are you comparing the most expensive Audi 3.0 TDI 272 Quattro S Line 4dr Tip Tronic @ £38,950 against the most expensive Skoda Octavia 2.0 TDI CR vRS 5dr DSG 4x4 @ £27,950? This Audi is "faster".

Are you comparing the cheapest Audi 2.0 TDI Ultra SE 4dr @ £29,150 against the cheapest
Skoda Octavia 2.0 TDI CR vRS @ £24,750? This Octavia is faster.

You really should both be comparing like with like as well as taking into account true "on the road" prices.

PS I might have some small details wrong so please don't attack me on the nitty gritty model names etc.

I drive a smaller car than this. With a slightly bigger engine (Still only a 1.4 .... turbo). That gets to 60 quicker still. No problems getting past trucks on A-roads in it.

They're more or less the same mechanically. As far as engine technology is concerned it's only really super cars that get bespoke engines. It is a way of offering increasing trim levels throughout their range of products. You have the premium Audi down the range to the Skoda's. Just compare the interiors of both. I totally agree however that badge *****rism is the leading cause of Audi sales.

Less than 9 seconds. What car is it ?
skdotcom
25 May 16 #93
But 75bhp isnt normal. It is suboptimal in comparison to the average car on the road. The average car will be accelerating quicker and this thing can't get out of the way or keep up in tricky situations such as roundabouts. Not dissing this car, just making the point that I'd prefer to have better performance to safely pull out and keep up with traffic. It's not about gambling at roundabouts, its about having confidence to drive alongside the average modern car.

Don't imagine the mpg will be too good in this. Not a lot of power and probably pretty heavy. You'd spend your life ragging the guts out of it to get anywhere. 0-62 in 14s is pretty slow and I think a lot of people would find it frustrating to drive.

If you can live with that it'll be a decent little car for the money.

25 May 16 2 #80
Voted hot. Putting aside all the comments, this is a good price for a brand new well made car.

However, performance wise....having recently had use of a similar performance car on loan from my Dad (2003 Honda Jazz 1.4), I found pulling out at roundabouts and joining traffic at speed to be less than satisfactory! I personally would not buy a car with this level of performance, but each to their own and I'm sure many people enjoy sitting at roundabouts taking a gamble as to whether their car is quick enough to get out without getting hit or beeped
Oh, and it is incredible that people still rumble on about this basically being a Skoda or an Audi. Drive a Skoda for a few days and then jump in an Audi. If you really think the quality of materials , sound deadening and styling is the same you need serious help. Each car is made to a budget and if you are happy with Skoda then fine, but dont pretend to yourself it is an Audi. They may have mechanical parts shared but a car and a driving experience is much more than. This little rant was inspired but someone I know who recently bought a Skoda Octavia VRS Diesel and tried to tell me it was as fast as a new Audi S4.

Ironic that Skoda and Seat are more reliable than the parent company brand of VW & Audi.

I dunno, they hold their value OK if you are in it for the long-haul (i.e. dont want a new car every 24months)

If you had it for 4 years(48 months) as a town runabout, that is £156 a month, and you own it and can probably sell it for £4-4.5k if it's been looked after (based on current market), so equates to about 3K for 48 months doesn't seem bad IMO. (~60 quid pcm?)

I know you could buy a cheap C1 or Picanto, but based on hire/courtesy cars I've had, the Ibiza is a bit nicer to ride in and hold their value better than some competitors.

It's a little on the slow side for my liking, but I know plenty of people who have a car purely to get to work through city traffic and to the shops at the weekend.

Just in case anyone needs clarification:

This is an Ibiza SC, which refers to the body shape only. SC essentially means it's a three door. The trim level is 'E', which is their most basic specification.

Maybe.

But if you do much A-road driving cars like this aren't much fun when it comes to overtaking.

bilbob
25 May 16 #62
Yes, because internet law says any comment made in contradiction of your own opinion must be taken as its most extreme.
Would you drive this car flat out everywhere?
No?
So why would you drive a more powerful car flat out everywhere?

Of course less powerful cars can be fun to drive.
But then again, that not what I said was it??

More convenient
Ah, an actual point. Well done.
Well, a more powerful car is more convenient and easier because it involves fewer gear changes, less stress on the driver, less thought required about gears for that next hill, how much time you will need to accelerate to overtake that next vehicle, how much space and time you'll need to match speed so you can pull out into that gap...

And your final point about a more powerful car being able to carry more and tow more, merely backs up what I said, no idea what point you are trying to make there!!

Now go ahead and take those points to their extreme, or indeed, read stuff into them that I haven't said.

Small, underpowered cars can be fun to drive.

What is convenient about them?

So can a 1.9 Umwelt VW Sharan. Not very fast is it?
bilbob
25 May 16 1 #58
Because they are safer, easier, less stressful to drive. More comfortable, more convenient.
Can carry more, tow more. Cruise easier. Accelerate up hills. On fast cruises are actually more economical.
Maybe there are some more, but there are certainly plenty of good reason for wanting a faster, more powerful car.

Not saying everyone NEEDS one, but to dismiss a more powerful car as pointless, is just as bad at least, as criticising this one for being underpowered.

DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY

After paying in full for the car, you will later find out that the car is not yours. In my case, the car was registered to an insurance company in another country. They demanded over £800 in 'hire car' fees and, when I refused to pay, they appointed a third-party company to recover the car.

I know several other people who have had the exact same experience. Unfortunately, the company have managed to get most of the negative reviews removed and have flooded the internet with fake positive reviews. Take a look at their Facebook and Twitter pages to see their strange posts and false promises.

The company have been ruled against by the Advertising Standards Authority and the Financial Ombudsman Service. They are also currently being investigated by the police and two Trading Standards departments.

I have the Vista version of the 1.0 for this price. 3 months ago. The engine is great, surprisingly a lot of power considering my last car was more powerful. I think it's the way the engine is configured. Gets the most out of it without having a turbo and expensive insurance groups that seems to be the new car fashion. The Vista is top of the range though, so comes with full kit. This model unfortunately is a bit basic. Depends what you want from a car. Heat added for the price though

25 May 16 #44
I've got the 2016 Skoda Fabia with the same engine (and the Ibiza is based on the same chassis)
Whilst I definitely would not call it a "sport" its a very decent engine and actually sounds really throaty for a 3 cylinder, and 0-40 its a quick perfomer.
On paper, I wanted the 1.2 Turbo but after giving the 75 bhp 1.0 engine a try I absolutely love it, and its definitely not dangerous joining motorways! (and I do this twice a day on my daily commute), so I opted for the 1.0 which was a cheaper car than the 1.2T
Not sure on the Ibiza, but on the Fabia they also do a de-tuned 60 bhp version of the 1.0 engine, that one you probably would want to give it a miss.

Sport is the trim level.

Like FR or SE etc. Same for other VW Group cars, S-Line for Audi, R-Line for VW, etc.

Really old engine technology. The new 1 litre engine they do in the Ibiza is much more powerful and efficient. I suppose they're trying to push them out the door so they don't have to try and sell them along the new ones. This will depreciate like a stone.
