If you go to the Vodafone site on your phone - it gives the option to check out without a top up - so £79 including delivery for this waterproof, near stock Android phone.

With Marshmallow adoptable storage - it will take a MicroSD card as on board storage - getting round the obvious limitation of 8GB on board storage.

I really do not need one - but at this price - it will make a fantastic back up / phone for in the bath / on the beach. It would be rude not too!!!

Fast (emailed) unlock codes are under £1.50 on certain auction sites.

(The other deal for this was expired a few days ago and not online)

Keep in mind when you place your purchase with Vodafone, they say the ETA is 1-2 weeks. But their practice is to freeze your purchase money in your bank account for 2 weeks when they start stocking the phone from the warehouse.

This has happened to me with my Huawei P9. I have waited 3 weeks and still no phone. Cancelled the order and went to other shops and buy there instead.

It is not worth all the time wasted for a few pounds saving when you can get the phone instantly from some other carriers. AVOID VODAFONE.

Its good practice to avoid buying anything from anywhere that's out of stock, which is exactly what 1-2 weeks basically means with vodafone.

This phone with only 8GB internal is seriously hampered. Marshmallow adoptable storage will not work for a lot of apps which only work on internal storage and will not move to the SD card.

Still good price for a useful basic phone but the the 16GB and 2GB ram model is the one to get.

Rumour has it the new Moto G 4th edition will have this spec?

You can easily do this on the desktop too. Just open the console (ctrl-shift-j on Chrome) and cut and paste this in:

document.querySelector(".similar-products").setAttribute("style", "")

press enter and you'll see the section with the keep existing sim option.

You can insert an SD card and use it as internal memory (i.e. not as external storage) so the 8gb thing isn't an issue. The 1gb RAM is a big deal though - 2gb is the minimum I'd recommend for Marshmallow.

I had a Moto G running Marshmallow. I formatted the SD card to use as Internal memory. To repeat most of my apps would not run on the SD, some of them yes but not enough to be useful to me.

Currently experiencing this, been on hold for 35 minutes waiting for somebody to answer.

I placed an order with them on Monday, which didn't arrive this week despite the money being taken (a completed transaction that appears on my statement, not just a temporary hold).

I asked what was going on via Live Chat as the tracking showed a DPD tracking number, but it didn't work on the DPD site. The guy on Live Chat said that my order has been halted and that unfortunately I won't be receiving it. I then asked him about the money being taken, and he said that I can request a refund by calling them, but I won't get one automatically... Never again Vodafone. Never again.

It's taken 8 phone calls & 28 days to get them to refund me after I cancelled an order. I hope you have more luck!

27 May 16 #23
Absolutely correct. You can override some apps though by following the convoluted setting, giving it permission to write SD and then hope that enables it and then move to the oherbi I manually move it.
I did that on a few programs.
But unfortunately sometime later it killed the SD card off, killing the OS as notifications and the whole swipe down died and basically ended in a complete wipe and resetup of the phone. So either don't override and hope they update the apps. (It was a nice Samsung Evo could have been bad luck but if it goes it takes everything else with it)

It basically behaves like 5.x but without the annoying manual stage of transfer to the SD every time it updates the app.

Still for most 1G\8G will be enough. SD is an added bonus.

That is unless you try to play the 1GB modern games on it.

Phone, text, Facebook ,messengers websites, central heating, paying apps, shopping. It's plenty. But then so is my 1G8G 1st gen moto G.

Shame the new G4's have lost the waterproof feature.

Just so you know, by law they have to refund you within 14 days from the day you cancelled, if your returning something then its within 14 days from when the seller receives your returned goods.

Normally letting them know you know your rights is a good incentive to get a move on.

yes I agree with all the above comments; minimum 2gb required now for all phones unless it's for your granny ! and yes the customer support is nothing short of disgraceful from such a big company , I had tons of phonecalls to them to return a Sony aqua phone , still waiting on it getting picked up and that was 8 months ago! ended up just selling on gumtree . even if you buy online instore won't entertain you .

Totally agree. I have a Moto G 2nd Gen dual sim phone which is a well-built, reliable and decent phone but the paltry 8gb of internal storage is so frustrating. Android OS takes up 2.5gb of that and I hoped the Marshmellow update was going to sort out the internal storage issue and allow any app to be installed on an sdcard formatted as adoptable storage but no it doesn't. Adoptable storage is not the mana from heaven I hoped it would be. No doubt this is a good price if you can accept this limitation but I would not buy another phone with only 8gb on board storage again.
captainbeaky
27 May 16 #27
Yep - that's good advice. I believe you have 28 days now (not 14) to cancel an order in writing either by email or by post - which is pretty difficult with Vodafone. However i was told that my order was successfully cancelled every time I contacted them - it just never happened.

1gb/8gb and the slow CPU is just a waste of time unless all you want the phone to do is make calls and occasionally browse the weather forecast.

And before the odd idiot pops up and say that '1gb does everything I need!', Android fills up the phone with crud over time that eats into storage, FB/Messenger/Outlook/Play Books, Kindle, Audible, music libraries, suck storage like its going out of fashion and NO, you cannot push everything onto a SD card.

If you really want the Moto G(3), get the 2gb version or better still pay another £30 for the better Xiaomi Redmi 3 Pro, or wait for the Moto G(4) if really want a Moto G.

Good insight, thanks. I'd worked most out for myself but hadn't considered the Xiaomi. Most "you should have this" phones are MASSIVE, but the Xiaomi still looks a sensible size.

Biggest considerations for me are battery life and signal strength. I have bad-side-of-borderline signal in the house on my old phone. My wife has good-side-of-borderline signal on her moto-g. I hear Moto Gs are VERY good for signal strength, so that says to me that I need to be very careful what I choose.

So ... has anyone first hand experience of how the Xiaomi holds on to signal in weak network areas compared with recent Motos?

Buying an Android phone with 1gb is like buying a BMW with a 1.0 litre engine. Yes, it go, stops and starts but it defeats the point. Yet some idiot will pop up (yes, they are idiots) and say it does everything they need.

Exactly the same situation here. Why spend £80 on a Moto G with 1gb etc? It's dumb. If you're not planning to use any smartphone functionality, why buy a smartphone? If you don't think you're going to use much smartphone functionality or install FB/Messenger/apps etc, why spend £80 on one? You can get an Android smartphone that does the same thing for £40 or less. So anyone who turns up and starts trying to justify a 1gb MotoG over a 2gb MotoG or some other smartphone etc because it 'does everything they need' is an idiot.

mmm.... I have a twinair 875cc Fiat 500c - blinking good car and for what I want it for - it has plenty of poke and is great fun. My point is that it totally depends on what you want to do with a phone.

I have several friends with these Moto's and they are thrilled with them (they paid the full rrp at around £129). They use them for streaming music, taking photos, watching films etc... For many, many people - this phone is perfect for them.

If 8gb and 1gb of RAM was an issue - potential purchasers would have found that out by now and wouldn't be looking at this deal.

I did say this would make a great back up phone in the OP. Not everyone wants to pay more than this for a phone that is mostly for casual use.

Just a follow up on the issue with my order. I have now spoken to them 3 times, and have been on hold for 2 hours altogether, and they still can't process my refund. Apparently I now have to wait until Tuesday to call them again because the payment team don't work weekends or bank holidays.

The fraud team stopped my order from leaving the warehouse as I apparently bypassed site security in order to get my order without the required bundle top-up (i.e. I refreshed a few times so that I could click the keep existing SIM option).
Picard123
28 May 16 #50
Ah, but that suits the car. Small capacity, sure, but it's turbocharged, in a small, light, city car with a short gearing. It's enough to get by. Nobody buys a 500 to cross continents at supersonic speeds. Some people like pootling along. There are also fuel economy benefits with that twinair, whereas there are no economy benefits of 1gb over 2gb. It's not like 2gb uses more electricity...

The point is with the 1gb Moto G - why? Hunt down a 2gb version or by something else. Potential purchasers will buy this because they don't know any better, not because it's suitable or ideal for their needs or futureproof. They've discounted the price for this phone for a reason - it's not been selling.

I returned a new phone to them (using their delivered bag) and waited for my refund (£100). I phoned them several times - being kept hanging on and transferred to different departments, each time I was given a different excuse. I had the receipts; screenshots, names - everything except my money. Overall I was on the phone for more than 6 hours over several days across 2 months. I was lied to constantly. I was given promise after promise. Trying to get money from Vodaphone was so frustrating! Eventually, I am ashamed to say, I gave up.

28 May 16 #55
Your issue sounds like faulty hardware or a rogue app more than simply a lack of RAM. Try resetting the handset and set it up from scratch (don't restore from a backup). If the issue still exists I would recommend returning it.

My recent experience of dealing with Vodafone.

Several weeks ago I took up an offer mentioned on this forum to buy a Motorola cheap. I paid for it online with the arrangent being that I collect it from my local Vodafone store.

It's been a complete disaster.

When I got to the store they wouldn't give me a phone even though they had them in stock because the computer hadn't allocated me one. Despite me having waited more than the 2 hours mentioned on their email to me. It took more than an hour in store to NOT get the phone.

Then I had to make various phone calls culminating in me being offered the chance to cancel the order and get a refund.

Now get this bit. They would not process a refund unless I went back into the store and showed my credit card statement.? Seriously, Vodafone don't know if they have taken money from your credit card??

Literally hours on the phone.

I did as asked and went into the store with proof. But then waited an hour whilst the store failed to get my refund. They even had to use one of their personal phones to call Vodafone because the store phone doesn't let them get through to the right bit of Vodafone.

I have no idea if the matter has been resolved yet.

Due to the difficulties encountered I eventually did a charge back via my credit card. My cc company were helpful thank goodness.

Overall not a happy experience.

An idiot is more like someone who presumes to know everything about everyone they've never met and that assumes they've thought out every possible scenario, yet they haven't won the Euromillions as yet, else it's unlikely (though not impossible or even wrong) that they'll be on HUKD looking at an £80 smartphone.

Let's consider a scenario:

A person wants a phone as well as the ability to receive business emails for his/her small business. He/she already has another smartphone for personal use. This person's decision is based not only on functionality but also form and he/she just happens to like the look of the Moto G 3rd Gen, the closeness to vanilla Android, the price point and the fact that it meets his/her basic requirements without breaking the budget or doing above and beyond. Presto! The person decides to go for this phone, which "does everything I need". Is the person an idiot or someone who made a practical decision?

One can assume that since you seem to know every possible scenario that you are a famous unbeaten chess player for the last many years.

I have a Moto E with 8GB Storage/1GB RAM and yes, it is "everything I need" in the sense that I don't want to play games on it except basic time wasters, I want to use the normal phone functions, have an internet browse and use a few apps. It slows down occasionally but on the whole those two things are not a limitation to me, I'm stuck in a big MicroSD for storage and RAM usage is usually around 70-80%.

Some may call me an idiot, I believe I made an informed purchase based on my requirements.

You'd still be dumb to spend £80 on one of these over the 2gb variant, or not spend another £30 for faster more powerful phone with increased memory, CPU/GPU etc. Not only does the +£30 phone resist getting clogged up and laggy with rogue Android crap, but it's going to last you MUCH longer before it becomes obsolete. For business apps, email and attachment caching and associated cross platform data sharing, one thing you do want is memory and CPU power. 1gb Android phones get very laggy over time if you're using it to pull through alot of data as Android memory memory usage is very inefficient, particularly the way it recycles memory during app usage. Phone to/from external memory card data storage is also an additional performance bottleneck. You'd have to be pretty dumb to spend £80 on the 1gb version of this yet baulk at £110 on a Snapdragon 616 / 3gb / 32gb etc given the latter's greater productivity if you're planning to use it as a business device.
TechBB
28 May 16 #66
Really? Well, I don't know of any phones with 1 gigabit of RAM but I do know of many with 1 gigabyte. In either case, do you mean a person needs a 2GB phone to receive and send emails pertaining to arranging customer appointments?

Btw, the word is "balk". Before you start referring to other people as dumb, you should perhaps learn to spell as well as learn the difference between 1gb and 1GB.
Picard123
28 May 16 #67
If you want to use a slower, inefficient 1gb phone over a faster 2gb/3gb variant, then be my guest. It's your time that's better frittered away putting up with the slowness and inefficiency of the device, not mine.

And 'baulk' is an accepted British variant of 'balk' (which is commonly used in the US). See Collins, Oxford English etc. I'm pretty sure this is HotDealsUK and not HotDealsUS, though in my experience, anyone who starts trying to introduce spelling and grammar into the discussion, has already lost the substantive argument...

http://grammarist.com/spelling/bulk-balk-baulk/

http://www.collinsdictionary.com/dictionary/english/baulk

http://www.thefreedictionary.com/baulk

And gigabit is Gb, not gb or GB. Do you ever get anything right?

I use a App Manager from the Google Play store for this purpose. As stated before most apps will not move and the Moto G paltry 8gb internal storage soon gets used up

This is the App manager I use 'AppMgr(App to SD)'

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.a0soft.gphone.app2sd&hl=en_GB

.
Robbo11
30 May 16 #82
You can see which apps are on internal storage and which are on the SD card just by going into 'Settings', then 'Storage & USB'. Then just select either the 'Internal Storage' or the 'SD card' option, then the 'Apps' option to show all the Apps that are installed on the one you selected.

It's basically the same process to move an App from internal storage to the SD card (if the App allows it) except from the list of Apps on internal storage, select the app you want to move. If there is a 'change' icon showing it means it can be moved to SD card so tap that, select the SD card on the pop-up panel, then select 'Move' on the next panel to move the app and it's data. Job done.

Coming up as £90 for me. Even when I check "no sim required". How are you guys getting £79?

Forgot to ask this but is it unlocked to other networks too?
cullies
2 Jun 16 #90
the clue is in the seller!
YES its locked to Voda, but easily unlocked for under £2 on Ebay

Despite the price increase, I'm guessing that this is still the cheapest readily available?

I'm aware of the 4th-generation announcement, but this would be a purchase for someone for whom 5.5" is definitely excessively large,
