Same here, been with them since 2011!! Their 4G is terrible, I have to switch airplane mode ON then OFF again to get 4G otherwise it's stuck on GPRS at times. Really annoying. It's slow too.

You can tether with Life Mobile if that helps.

I've gotta say, round 'ere at least, Life's 3G has been much faster and more reliable than 3's 4G or Giffgaff's 4G.

Have to agree with you on this. I did a speed test sat in my back garden yesterday and i pulled in 18mbps down load speed on my Life number which is 3g and then tested the other halfs giffgaff 4g sim and that pulled in 1.3mbps download!
The whole reason i left giffgaff was because of the totally unusable data.

Good deal but currently overcharging for calls made in Ireland (19p), which is far above the current limit placed on roaming by the EU (4.4p). As I travel there quite regularly, it's not an option for me. https://lifemobile.co.uk/Info/Tariffs

"With sweat pouring from their brows, MEPs have managed to push through the legislation that bans mobile phone roaming charges for those travelling within the EU's 28 member countries, but this will not become law until June 15, 2017 so from that date onwards, consumers won't pay extra to make calls, send texts or use the internet in any of the EU member states."
Obviously if we leave the EU the above won't apply here anyway.

Echo the comments regarding Life's excellent 3G speeds. I moved from a 4G contract elsewhere and can honestly say that the speeds feel no worse, in fact often better.

can anyone Bristol based comment on 3G speeds relative to Tesco's 4G?
briankav
7 May 16#21
Yes, but until June 2017, Life seem happy to break EU law and apply higher charges. Have chatted with them and firstly they said that the prices on the website were correect. When I pointed out the new EU rules on roaming (http://europa.eu/youreurope/citizens/travel/money-charges/mobile-roaming-costs/index_en.htm), they say they are 'looking into' this, but have not made any changes.

Do you have to pay extra for 0800 or and 0845 numbers? 40ppm is kind of steep price to listen "please hold.."
Bandanner
7 May 16#23
I have not called an 0800 number in a while on my mobile however you can use those apps that convert them into mobile friendly numbers so its free, well I assume you can still do that.
And thanks OP good deal been looking to switch contracts for my new phone!

Almost got this excellent deal the last time it was posted. Obtained my pac code from t-mobile - wasn't even trying to get T-mobile to match it and the lady I was speaking to didn't have access to discounts the 'last ditch' retentions guys have - anyway 2 hours later got a call from EE who were able to 'retain me' for £12.99/month unlimited calls and texts, 6gb data on double speed 4G, tethering and free calls to mobiles and landlines when in Europe. I think the EE assistant basically just applied a straight £10 discount to a standard off the shelf EE pay monthly contract they have as I saw it online.
4G speed at home is between 45-50mbps and at my inlaws 75mbs!
To give you an idea of what they were 'retaining', I was in the T-mobile 3G £16/m 12 month deal (long expired and just rolling) 3gb data and something like 1000 minutes and texts. So I wasn't exactly bank rolling them lol

7 May 16#25
Interesting, I am on t-mobile PAYG and was looking at this deal... is it possible to be "retained" on PAYG?
androidavis
7 May 16#26
.

On PAYG I've no idea. You can always obtain a pac code and see if you get a call back; you don't have to use the pac code - it just expires

7 May 16#30
Got a link? Sounds great for 4G and roaming
ec9wrr
8 May 16#31
They're not breaking the law though. The new EU roaming prices are a maximum surcharge for roaming. Not a maximum charge for roaming. Life charge 40p per minute in the UK after your minutes. So you need to add the maximum roaming charge to this 40p per minute.
ec9wrr
8 May 16#32
Maximum charge would be 44.4p then so they're not overcharging compared to the legislation. They're charging less than half what they could.

Also, just a wee update that after I upgraded to this
I later received a text from Life confirming the upgrade. However it stated that this was a 12 month contract.
I called them and they told me that this a generic message and it is definitely a 30 day
Definitely best to check though

9 May 16#36
This is true if you are on PAYG, but I'm talking about the inclusive minutes in the package. You should be able to use your unlimited inclusive minutes + 4.4p, not your inclusive minutes + 19p. That is treating one EU country, in this case the ROI, differently from all others. Recommend that you look at the law more closely.

Be aware - max number of SIMs per account is three. I know that now, as I've just tried to add 2 more to the 2 I took out last month, in trying to get the whole family on a reliable connection out here in the sticks, at a fair price. Helpful suggestion from the (UK) CSA was to get my partner to take out the 2 new SIMs in her name - even though we're at the same address, that classes as a separate account.
Worth noting - if you've been with LIFE for 6 months or more, you can claim a 20% discount on additional SIMs.
UPDATE: Was told on 9/5/16 that this HAS to be ordered via Broadband Choices website - CSA Zack spoke to his Manager, and they confirmed to him this deal couldn't be given to an existing account holder - over the phone. But my order has been processed by re-submitting via the HUK website link. So if you get this deal over the phone, you've done well.

Can you cap the bill with life mobile?
Scotty Boy
11 May 161#39
My understanding is that you can indeed cap it - from what I remember (and this may have changed) you have an initial cap of £5 in place and you can drop it down to £1; can't remember if you can do it both via telephone support with LM or via the website.

Can you port your number from virgin to life directly?
Bandanner
14 May 16#42
You should be able to just ask virgin for your PAC code, that will end any contract you have with virgin once Life use it (so be wary of any exit fees).
Had this the last few days, called Life to sort my PAC code and it was transferred the next morning. No issues so far pretty happy. I have been on 3G for years, its more than fast enough for me and there does not seem to have been any drop in speed on Life that I have noticed so far.

Finally managed to upgrade my 13.95 4GB Maxi bundle to this bundle after speaking to 3 different advisers all stating that this couldn't be done over the phone and I had to cancel my current bundle which is nonsense.
it actually worked when i rang up to pay my smart cap as it was maxed out and my mobile data was disabled. I mentioned that people on Hotukdeals managed to get this deal sorted over the phone.
I recommend this to everyone hitting their smart cap limit as this is saving me £5 - £10 a month.

It seems CS people don't know much about it - one guy was suprised that they have tethering...
Anyway it seems for some reason it's phone dependant - my old samsung s2 needed 3rd part app (over usb cable) but my s6 is working fine. I don't think they have a list of "compatible" phones so it's a hit&miss...
