Reduced further to £219 with a £20 off code (TDX-V4X7) to bring it to £199
My Mam was after a sub £250 laptop for internet surfing and i have been keeping an eye out for a few days on this at £249 was shocked to see it reduced by £20 this morning to £229 so went for it. I think they are decent specs for under £230. Free delivery to a Tesco store or £3 postage

A very casual user still benefits from faster boot up times, so that point is simply wrong. Casual doesn't mean "I want to sit here and wait five minutes for my PC to boot."

For anyone still considering buying this, be aware the laptop looks different than shown in the stock images (there is in fact no gap between screen and keyboard) I've alerted Tesco to this and they are planning to now update the images.
Might be important to some, like myself, I think aesthetically it looks worse without it.

YouTube, the 100% reliable and unbiased site for irrefutably accurate facts!
As you are the one who made the claim in the first place it's your job to do the research and provide sources, it isn't my job to research. (Burden of proof, you might want to research that).
Thank you for finally providing the link to actual figures. If you'd just done that in the first place we could've saved all that chatter. So to summarise, it says 25% of Apple devices in 2010 in the US failed after 2 years. That's still one quarter, meaning 75% (the vast majority) didn't fail. Furthermore, how does this compare with other manufacturers besides Apple? What was the cause of failure, eg drops/water damage etc? I note that "accident rate" make up 18.1% of that percentage and only 7.5% malfunction rate.
What does this high accident rate tell us? Can we really blame Apple for making such beautiful devices that people might like to use them without a case? Is it maybe that a significant proportion of Apple device users happen to be careless or that they tend to slip out of one's hand? When compared like for like with other phone manufacturers what are the malfunction vs accident rates? Would it be premature to extrapolate that Apple devices tend to fail when they aren't damaged by the user shortly after warranty from this data? In my opinion yes.

Oh dear Misa another member of the spelling police.
Well having a repair workshop and already provided you with an expert on youtube you prefer to go on your singular experience.
Idiot as i thought.
More money than sense!
Funny its always the ones that are loaded that come out with the crap you do.
M5rcc also provided you with links which also show the figures duhhhh yet you only go on your own personal experience rather than engineers who see hundreds or thousands of the Crapple products come and go for repairs lol what a dumbutt!

What's an "electotronics" engineer, never heard of them! Since you're either in a made up profession or can't spell your own profession, I somehow doubt your authority here.
I don't care about Louis Poohey, where are the actual figures showing Apple products fail shortly after warranty. I've owned multiple iPhones and funnily enough they've all lasted well beyond their warranty. You must be the stupid one and your last comment about people who spend £600 on a smartphone just proves it. "You can get two PCs for the same amount." Dumbest logic ever. You could also end famine for a family in Africa for a month for that amount. People spend on things they want. What world do these people live in? Maybe they're more well off than you are and enjoy quality.

I am an electotronics engineer 30 years - I am telling you Apple is a joke and has fooled stupid people like you who believe everything they are fed - sure they are good to look at and use but inside lies the rub.
As I already said you want proof then check the links provided or just google Louis Rossman on youtube - he is an Apple specialist and describes Apple products in a "ahem" rather direct way!
You have to laugh at peopl;e who think spending £600 on a smartphone when you could build two pcs for that amount as a bargain! What world do these people live in - usually plnety of money ime.

No, it wouldn't matter. If Apple's products really did all fail soon after warranty and as a result their reputation went down the drain and the consumers decided to stop purchasing Apple products, as one would expect, they'd surely no longer be in business.
And actually I find Apple are reasonably priced compared. For example, their latest and in my opinion greatest iPhone, iPhone SE, is one of their least expensive yet.

Obviously, year on year processors get faster and new software has higher hardware demands. It doesn't take a genius to know that, but it makes for nice newspaper headlines.
My question was, what reliable source are you basing the statement that Apple products fail soon after warranty as this simply isn't my experience, and Apple have one of the strongest reputations in this area. Apple would quickly go out of business if it were the case.

Built in obsolescence indeed - I also repair plasma tellys and these are designed for 2-4 years tops - you wonder why they give you a 2 year guarantee lol
Same problem with plasma tellies as with thin laptops - the case is thin and the cheapskates dont put heatsinks on the y-sus chips , use cheap resistors and capacitors that they have tested to failure and know full well the electrolyte will dry up under heat they will only last 2-4 years. I have a marconiphone crt television in my loft that is over 40 years old and it still works - terrible , we are destroying our environment - dont get me started on iphones and tablets with non (or very difficult) to replace batteries!

I don't need to. I said very clearly that it's a good deal, but it's not earth shattering in my view when there are quite a few compromises made. I disagree that its price of £199 is the "only one point to consider" when I'd happily spend an extra £100 just to upgrade the naff screen.

At the risk of being pelted with excrement... if you're looking to buy a laptop of this spec you'll probably be a lot better served going the second-hand route. It's a decent spec for the price and should definitely be considered a good deal, but it's not earth-shattering.
A few points to consider:
- CPU is good but won't set the world on fire. It's right at the bottom end of anything with an "i" prefix. A 5 year old i5 will outperform it
- 1336x768 is, in my opinion, unacceptable on a 15" laptop in 2016
- Super glossy screen will make sunlight your enemy, though this is an issue with most budget laptops
- Inbuilt speaker is woeful, even for a laptop
- Borderline useless for gaming, if you're interested
- Contrary to what anyone else in this thread has said, you really should upgrade to a SSD, so consider this an additional expense on top of some sort of caddy to stick the 500GB in
Shaydog
24 May 161#101
You don't get to choose whether or not something is relevant in a debate, you just get to debate it. So if you have something to argue then argue it. It appears that you don't want to hold a discussion with anyone who holds opposing opinions, you just want them to be quiet. If embarrassment doesn't work then you try a little condensation or patronisation.
You come across as being against free speech. Is that the case?

By pointing out people's grammatical mistakes you're trying to shut them down through embarrassment rather than having a proper debate which looks like classism and elitism to me. So you had access to a better education than someone else, lucky you, was that meritocratically earned? Or are you just a snob?

Sure, but the way people go on about installing an SSD on here suggests you are stupid if you don't paint your house green. On a laptop costing £210, a 250gb ssd on a HUKD offer of around £40 is an effective increase of 20%... if you saw that posted as a deal it would get shot down for being expensive for an i3 laptop.
There are advantages to installing an SSD but it is not a one-way deal... the time taken to install, the capacity is reduced (unless you spend £90 on a 480gb ssd) and there is a lot for a non-techie to get wrong in the installation... and it's not free. I'd normall wantr an ssd but not convinced it is worth it on a fairly basic system (i3 with 4gb ram) unless I was travelling with it.
If you are worried about boot time decreasing, use something like HijackThis to see what is running on startup / in the notification bar and remove offending programs. IIRC, windows 10 has a boot-time analysis tool in it (or is that just Pro?).

I don't think anyone said it was necessary, but surely it's desirable to have faster boot times even if all you do once you've booted up is web browse? Plus all those updates that require restarting? Plus, you have a nice quiet SSD with no moving parts as someone mentioned.

On my parents' laptop, and on almost any non-SSD computer on Windows, I find they boot up quick at first/on a clean install. Then once you've installed a few programs they take ages. I haven't measured it on my parents' laptop but it really does feel like five minutes when you factor in that even after booting up it's still loading stuff (the hard drive is audibly loading) and you have to wait a good while before you can launch Google Chrome etc. They're on Windows 7. This is consistently my experience. And you can do little things like remove start up programs, make sure there's no malware etc but nothing apart from an SSD will make a real difference.

So to fit SSD you have to remove all screws out the bottom then pull the keyboard out the front and remove three screws (one is under void warranty sticker). Pull out the DVD drive and it should all come apart. Took me hours to figure that out. Some of the plastic clasps snapped but it really doesn't matter. Solid as a rock when a screwed back together.

Being an Iphoney user I suppose you couldnt do a google search?

Anyone who missed out, missed nothing.
And actually I find Apple are reasonably priced compared. For example, their latest and in my opinion greatest iPhone, iPhone SE, is one of their least expensive yet.
My question was, what reliable source are you basing the statement that Apple products fail soon after warranty as this simply isn't my experience, and Apple have one of the strongest reputations in this area. Apple would quickly go out of business if it were the case.
As I said previously: not fat, nor balding, nor on a desktop, nor spotty, nor living in a flat and don't have dirty clothes everywhere. Even the wrong skin colour!

Just google Louis Rossman on Youtube he will tell you in no uncertain terms how **** Apple products are!
And he is a well known specialist in Apple repairs!
Yes they are **** products in terms of repair and longevity and yes there is no coincidence that their products fail shortly after warranty expires - its not gossip just google the facts - why do you think Apple are making so much money they are the biggest company in IT after being the smallest! Simple - change the way you manufacture and send it all to Shenzen in China to be manufactured in sweat shops/factories that have their workers jumping out of windows 20 floors to the ground to escape!

Laptops should be made thicker not thinner - the number of these ultra thin laptops i get in my workshop is unreal and
they all have the same faults caused by overheating the solder / damaging the gpu etc etc etc

Wrong - I correct someone who made a false statement. Apparently that makes me a troll...
No but it would seem you are given that I cannot "choose whether or not something is relevant in a debate".
Make your mind up, son....
- Contrary to what anyone else in this thread has said, you really should upgrade to a SSD, so consider this an additional expense on top of some sort of caddy to stick the 500GB in
You come across as being against free speech. Is that the case?
Irrelevant in this 'debate'
