Mine has turned up. I take back what I said earlier - it does behave as an NAS, which is a very pleasant bonus feature (which they seem to underplay, in my opinion). Attach it to your router & it can be mounted as a network drive on your PC, but even if you don't mount it, it also dishes out files via DLNA.

As has been pointed out, you don't need to rely on the (somewhat naff) apps to use it - it you've got a browser, you're in business.

this looks pretty good for the money. I wonder if it can work via Ethernet too as it seems to do everything else. if you can swap the internal drives for a 2tb or SSD that would be cool too. hopefully it's still available come payday

There's a lot of hate for this product on Amazon (US)
Even if it isn't as entirely flexible as it claims, you're still getting a 1TB expansion for iproducts and a portable power supply for <£50

You'd be crazy not to buy one!

*Ahem* I just ordered one, my flimsy rationale being that it doubles up as a Plex TV shows backup that lets the kids watch direct to their tablets when in the car / away from home. Less faff than rigging up the DVD players (increasingly the stuff the kids want to see is MP4s not DVDs anyway).

Told you my rationale was flimsy. But mainly it's because I want to tinker with it.

Just ordered. I was in need of a powerbank anyway, after a recent disastrous trip to Dublin with no phone charger. The wifi network streaming is also a great feature and it will be excellent for taking on holiday. Here's hoping the transfer speeds are decent. The 1tb storage is a bit weak by today's standards so if it didn't have the additional features it would be a bit overpriced even at £49.

Sorry, don't get the joke? If you're iOS bashing, the Android app hasn't changed in over 18 months either - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=lenovonewws.wd.activities&hl=en

I've emailed to try and cancel, can't see any confirmation that this would work plugged into a router either as some form of wired network addressable storage. Only seems to work as a wireless access point.
mickrick
23 May 16 1 #41
Yeah I was IOS bashing. So shoot me. And have you ever stopped to think that maybe the apps are working ok and don't need to be updated? Ever heard the the old adage "if ain't broke, don't fix it"?

And this is taken from the manual I posted the link to a few posts ago...

sijones855
23 May 16 #43
I think Bossworld's right, we shouldn't expect this little thing to behave like a NAS, not at this price. If you connect its Ethernet port to your router, I don't think the storage will show up on your network as a disk drive. I think the idea of the Ethernet port is simply that the Lenovo gadget is a mini wifi router: plug it into an existing hardwired connection and get your own wifi network.

One of the Amazon reviewers mentions 'NAS' but I'm not convinced they're right. I'll investigate when mine arrives.

Totally agree about the apps though - don't need an update if they work OK. So long as they don't get yanked off the app stores. But even if that did happen, I don't see why an iPad / tablet / smartphone couldn't access this thing via the web browser method?
Bossworld
23 May 16 #44
How cute. It's a shame some people can't just enjoy the platform they're using without feeling the need to put another down.

I read the manual before posting, thank you for the link. There's no immediately obvious confirmation, that the ethernet port is for anything other than creating a wireless access point. That said, the manual does reference "Internet
This option is used to set Internet access mode: wired access or wireless access. The default wired access and dynamic IP are shown as follow:" . Whoever receives one, if they're willing to do some testing it would be interesting to see if it does show up when hardwired in and set to samba sharing.

My biggest concern re: the lack of updates is support for various file formats, as information seems thin on the ground. Also, even if it currently works, there's no guarantee it will continue to work when iOS/Android gets updated. The screenshots also suggest it won't be running at the native resolution of an iPhone 6 handset on iOS.

I don't know why companies produce junk like this which requires their own "app". What is it with companies re-inventing the wheel (badly...very, very, badly), I don't know how these corporations are so big and successful considering the irrational decisions they all seem to make.

Their are vary standards for network-based storage which have hundreds, if not thousands of clients already available to access them, they are publicly available standards so that anyone can write a client and connect to them. There's NFS, Samba, SFTP, FTP and more. What is wrong with using one of those? I already have file all the file managers that I need and they can already connect to these protocols, why would I want a separate program to access this or any other device?

24 May 16 #52
If this can perform as a NAS (which is a network drive - I don't believe that the definition should include "playing"/streaming videos etc) then it's pretty damn good. I would love to be able to have a portable NAS. The wifi hotspot is also a great feature. This would additionally be a fine tool for DJing - personal hotspot allows for using wifi controllers (tablet w/ TouchOSC) with network storage for extra music too!

directly typing "192.168.100.1" into the browser."

24 May 16 #57
The code needs to be in caps not lower case. Otherwise can't see why it didn't work for you as it did for me. Free delivery as well even though the price is under the £50 limit. £35 for the 1TB would be normal so £15 gamble on the wifi capabilities.
nickb23
24 May 16 #58
if it is like the other wireless hard drives, you only really need to use the app to setup to begin with. from then on it will be like a network share. I had a Kingston Mobilelite with an attached 320gb hard drive, and the kids used VLC in the car to stream directly from the drive to their ipad and android tablet.

FYI - I have just called Lenovo to try and get more information on this product and they have told me that they do not provide support for it and suggested I need to speak to the reseller (even though I kept telling them its on their webpage).

Still trying to find out if it works with DLNA to streaming devices and hoped they would be able to answer that. So not very good if they can't even discuss it (or have it listed on their system).

24 May 16 #61
So how would you expect to access this piece of junk remotely?

Picture the scenario: You're away from home for a night and you feel like relaxing in a gentleman's way. But the hotel's in-room entertainment is too dear and anyway, you don't want it appearing on your bill. You have a lot of material on your networked hard drive at home, which you have downloaded purely for research reasons, but you have no way of accessing it. If only you had some way of connecting remotely to the hard drive to stream some of said material. Like a small piece of software on your smartphone, for instance.

dar72
24 May 16 1 #63
Using an NFS/Samba/SFTP/FTP client....obviously? For example, on Android, ES File Explorer allows you to access remote filesystems using protocols like this and it will do it much better.

I actually forgot DLNA/UPnP, that would not only allow you to access files on this device but would handle the streaming for you too in your situation.

I think you completely missed my point.
IronGlaive
24 May 16 #64
Hi Dar, you sound like you might know a bit about this device? Do you know if it can be joined wirelessly to a home network and then media streamed off it to a roku / firetv / ps4/ xbox etc via dlna?
dar72
24 May 16 #65
I don't know about this device specifically, I'm just saying that devices like this should use existing protocols and clients rather than forcing the user to use a proprietary client...which sounds like what you need. I don't have one of these but it seems it only works with their client software which is unlikely to be available for those devices.

Personally I use minidlna on Linux for streaming videos to Android. Most of the NAS devices out there support at least some of the protocols that I mentioned including DLNA although some (like this one it seems) require a proprietary program to access the drive, personally I'd never buy one of those for various reasons.
NikLP
24 May 16 #66
Surely Lenovo aren't daft enough to issue something that requires a proprietary client? That's insanity.

If this box doesn't appear as a networked drive ie NAS I'd be amazed. Well, stupified. It would be absolutely perfect for my needs if it did!

Then dar72 said:

How do you know it doesn't "use existing protocols and clients"? I wish people would contribute to these threads with some knowledge instead of just guessing. It would be much more helpful to others who are thinking of buying this.
dar72
24 May 16 #69
Because of the reviews stating that it does and complaining that the mobile client is out of date (one reason why proprietary clients are a bad idea)
MaNIaCv1
24 May 16 #70
What reviews? Link please? Just because it has a proprietary client, it does not preclude access via standard protocols. Do you know for sure it doesn't support standard protocols?
dar72
24 May 16 #71
I'm not spending time finding a link for you, that was hours ago. The product description on Lenovo's website doesn't list any protocols that it can be accessed by therefore I'll assume it doesn't support any. If it does then it's their fault for not providing adequate details and they don't deserve to sell any.

MaNIaCv1

Yes, I got mine today too and it works well, Mobile phone internet access using Wi-Fi or wired pass through. You don't have you use the dedicated app (Wi-Fi Storage) to configure and set it up, as it also has a web interface on 192.168.100.1 So far I've found it supports DLNA and File access using SAMBA. I've streamed a test MKV film and that works well too. Very pleased with it so far, especially for the money.

mine arrived yesterday and i'm really enjoying so far. Samsung Smart TV picks its up straight away either through WiFi or just plugging it into my router.
alittleleftbehind
1 Jun 16 #83
what do you mean by mobile phone internet access using WiFi?
MaNIaCv1
1 Jun 16 #84
Your mobile would normally connect directly to your Wi-Fi router to access the internet, with this bit of kit your mobile connects via Wi-Fi to the F800 which in turn connects to your router using Wi-Fi or wired ethernet. So the upshot is your mobile has access to both the internet and the F800 at the same time so you can stream movies and view files or browse the internet. I hope that makes sense.
deathtrap3000
1 Jun 16 #85
And its not necessary to access it via this method either. You can just plug it into your router and access it without connecting to it's own WiFi.
MaNIaCv1
1 Jun 16 #86
Yes that method works well too, but would remain tethered to your router, if you need portability then Wi-Fi works well. Also when you don't have access to your own Wi-Fi router, in a hotel for instance, you can connect it to wired RJ45 connection, and then the F800 acts as your portable Wi-Fi router. That's the beauty of this device, there are so many different ways to use it.

That makes sense (that's what I was doing) just making sure there wasn't some extra feature I was missing out on!

Does anyone know how to switch it on to WiFi mode (blue light) etc when it's already in disk mode (just white light with usb plugged in) I can't seem to do it without powering it down first
MaNIaCv1
1 Jun 16 #89
I don't think it's possible to access to the hard disk via Wi-Fi at the same time as accessing the disk via USB, which probably makes sense I suppose. You can unplug the USB, turn the F800 on, then plug it in again so it's charging, but you can't then access the disk through the USB.
alittleleftbehind
1 Jun 16 #90
That makes a lot of sense actually. I've been going crazy with it all evening only doing one or the other. I was planning on running it from a Ubuntu computer to power and transfer files from but I suppose I'm better of with it being mains powered and networking the Ubuntu (and every other device)

Had mine a few days now. I had a bit of a head scratcher at first about configuring it to use as a NAS, but its going great guns now. Well worth fifty quid of anyone's money.
mickrick
4 Jun 16 1 #94
Here's what I had to do - connect to the lenovo f800 network using a phone or tablet. Web browse to the f800 setup screen. Go to internet connection option. Reconfigure the internet connection as wired and give it a static ip address on your home network. Save and do a hard reboot.

A couple of things - you can only save configured static ip details if you have it connected by ethernet. You can't save them if the cable isn't connected. Also, my VM Superhub2 freezes any time I change anything - even turning the f800 off and on again triggers it. I then have to do a hard reboot of the router. And finally Esther (if you're under 40, google it), I can only turn it off and on if the usb cable isn't connected. Once its up and running I can connect the usb cable and it still works ok.
alittleleftbehind
4 Jun 16 #95
thanks for the tip! hadnt tried a static IP. my only issue is that if you use the software (or browser) to access files, you can't set up a downloads file (for example for torrents) and just leave it running.

See the posts above - it shows up as an SMB share and I think there's a couple of other ways you can access it (web interface, DNLA).

To be honest, I just want to recoup my outlay, so I'm after £49 (inc postage). They're going for £70 odd on eBay. It's fully boxed with the original cable, as before it's just been plugged in and left. Someone else has PM'd so I'll start a thread and put you both down as first refusal.

has anyone formatted this drive to Mac OS journaled or Fat32? It comes NTFS however me and my family all ue macs. It's working fine over the network, and is picked up my tv so it's working fine, I'm just thinking if we ever want to plug it in and ue it as a 'normal' hard drive, we won't be able to write to it.

I'm reluctant to format in case it loses any of its current functionality- can anyone confirm?
NikLP
25 Jul 16 #105
I've looked pretty hard at options for configuring this unit and had some proper struggles with it. Just FYI I haven't come across anything where the has been a reformat of the drive unit.

Given that also I haven't seen anything about firmware updates or anything, I suspect the firmware is going to be locked to NTFS support, but I could be wrong. I'm not sure how you'd even go about testing it tbh.

I'm guessing that the teardown of the unit would involve removing the rubber feet, exposing some screws? Then disassemble the unit, removing the drive and reinserting a different filesystem'd drive to test it, but YMMV!

Indeed. Hard to set up these units!

On another note, can you not just enable NTFS support with macos? Its easy enough with Linux.
