Been hunting for a new TV and came across this. Very limited information available on it but £299 for 43" UHD Smart TV, 4 x HDMI, with two year warranty seems decent.

If this is cold then please point me in the direction of something better as buying a new TV is confusing me with so many similar models available.

I think anything less than 78cm will not do or the legs will be hanging off?

While you're correct in that there's no additional information available to the 4K result, there are plenty of ways to make intelligent use of what information is available to make a higher resolution image that looks significantly better than the original. Having studied and worked with image processing algorithms for a large part of my life, I can assure you that decent upscaling involves a LOT more than "duplicating existing pixel data then applying a sharpening filter", and the results of high quality upscaling can be very worthwhile. The issue is that a TV needs to upscale in realtime, and good upscaling algorithms require more complex software and a lot of processing power. Cheaper TVs tend to cut corners here, with the worst "upscaling" giving fairly mediocre results. Many TVs do much better though, even down to the low end these days.

Note that even on the example images in the article you linked to, you can very clearly see improvements between the upscaled image and the 1080 version. For example look at the (lack of) aliasing along all the rooftop edges in the first image below (upscaled 1080p) vs the second image (non-upscaled):

http://i.rtings.com/images/reviews/m-series-2015/m-series-2015-upscaling-1080p-large.jpg
http://i.rtings.com/images/reviews/e-series-2015/e-series-2015-upscaling-1080p-large.jpg

That's almost certainly a second order interpolation of some sort taking place, most likely bicubic. It is very definitely NOT duplicated pixels plus sharpening, which would look absolutely awful on those edges! Plenty of more complex algorithms exist than bicubic interpolation but they tend to be reserved for upscaling photos and so on, where time isn't so critical. e.g. look at software like Perfect Resize.

Bottom line: Good upscaling helps, despite what you seem to believe.

Found the model on the Spanish Hisense site. Not sure why they don't have it on their UK website.

Also in case not mentioned before the update allows the user to switch between FreeView (Aerial) and FreeSat (Satellite). The TV does not have the licence (not many do) for the full EPG in FreeSat so this is handy to switch between the two services. Press ok to bring up the channel list, press left for sub menu and choose the top option. Yes HDR over HDMI now and full 4k on YouTube. Set your TV picture to something decent (plenty of videos on YouTube) and this is cracking for the original 299 !

Does anyone know what are all the changes in this upgrade?

did the update break something to do with putting in a 1080 source and upscaling to 4k? I can't get my pc connected and playing games properly, it puts the window in the top left, duplicates the to the top right and covers them boths slightly and fills the bottom with garbage. Setting desktop to 1080 still shows 4k when I press the info button (60hz on the back and 30hz on the sides)

when the update Appears and you select upgrade while its updating the system will send it back to the back ground, however the TV should restart I expect this didn't happen? i suppose you checked in settings -> about -> system info for the version number if it G0825 i has updated but i suppose you already checked that might be a good idea to disconnect Ethernet factory reset the tv and re-connect to wi fi and do a detect upgrade again might work that way

Hi Deanali
My TV has detected the upgrade. I've clicked on the "Upgrade" option then it sends me back to the "Settings" tab. Does it automatically install or let you know when it's ready? I've selected the upgrade but can't see anything happening or downloading as it were.
How does the whole process happen?

My update arrived this morning. Fixed the issue I had with my BT Ultra HD box whereby it would not show a picture after powering down on the 4K HDMI ports and repowering. (I had to switch on connected to the HD port and move the connection to the 4K port).
The only issue I had were the reset off TV settings, although I only noticed when that terrible adaptive contrast or whatever it is that causes the screen to change brightness all the time and no picture initially from the BT box until I changed the setting on the BT box to 10bit output from 8 bit.

Just to reiterate what has been said here. no 4:4:4 at 4k @ 60hz for me. Default settings windows rescales all windows, text, apps with 300% dpi and yes everything looks fine then. But back to 100% and chroma is not 4:4:4. Not sure if a new HDMI cable could sort it or not but pretty doubtful. @30hz its fine.

Good news for owners of this series of TV.

Just got off the phone with the Hisense tech dept and they confirm that the panel is 10 bit, not 8 and that a firmware update is definitely coming later in the year to update the 2 HDMI 2.0 ports to 2.0a to support HDR there, as well as over USB.

don't worry too much about Argos warranty, because on every brand new TV Hisense have a 2 yr manfacturer warranty as standard (just need to register online).

Looks like the same thing to me looking at the specs on the US site.

Just badged differently for each market.

Argos ebay would be the same as Argos and I'm not sure how any warranty would be affected as it is an automatic right to have one.

It's simply that they have a store front on there.and the company registration details are present.

Is this the same as the h7c. I have contacted hisense but they haven't replied. Argos have said they have discontinued it and Amazon order from the factory whenever an order is placed. Not sure about ordering it through Argos eBay as the warranty only covers specific sellers. So not sure if eBay Argos will count as Argos. Don't want to get it if the h7c comes out in a few weeks etc. So is this the h7c and is there anywhere else I can purchase apart from eBay. There are plenty available on .fr .de .es Amazon but they don't ship to the uk. This is bugging me as I have saved for this to since it was announced in Jan then once I have saved enough I can't buy it anywhere. Don't really want to risk Amazon as have to wait 1-2months then if it's faulty etc will have to wait another 1-2 months

Contacted Argos to ask when they will be having more stock and they sent two replies.

Thank you for your email regarding the TV you are hoping to purchase from us. I am sorry that this item is unavailable and is sold out in your area. It is a special seasonal purchase and is not part of our normal or standard range and has been promoted in a flyer campaign which has proved popular and sold out where you live. It means that unfortunately we will not have any more stock for the foreseeable future and we recommend that you select and alternative product. It will remain on our Global web site until all stock in the Country has been sold.

Thank you for your email regarding the availability of this item.

I have checked this item, and I am sorry to say that we will not be having further deliveries of this item.
Our new catalogue is launched this Saturday 16th of July, and our new range of items will be available then.

For a product that clearly sells well, it seems a bad decision to drop it.

Just done some digging about and yes, it does seem that on some models of TV and AV receivers, a software update is possible.

With this being a 2016 model TV then it might just be even more probable, which will make this one of the best buys you can make right now.

For those wishing to arrange satellite channels. Tune as normal and then output the list to USB. Free channel editor app on Web. Allows you to arrange how you wish, I.e have regional BBC1 etc and then upload back to set. Hisense support excellent, not DSat nor does it claim to be so no certificate allowing full EPG or order listing but brilliant for the money. Astra UHD demo channel shows how good 4k is on this set. Impressed with Netflix 4k and sound is excellent, better than my Samsung. You need to play about with picture settings to get display right and no ITV/4od but for 299 who cares. Really impressed

No real ideas, I'm afraid... other than the obvious ones of settings for the LNB LO frequency and the name of the satellite you want.
My settings paths are: Settings / select Channel / select Auto Scan / select Change Setup / select Satellite / select Single Satellite / select Astra 28.2E / select Antenna Setup / set LNB Power ON / LO frequency 9750,10600 / Auto 22K tone / press BACK button / select All Channels or just Free (whatever you want) / select Frequency Scan / press right arrow button and wait for scan to end. Where there are multiple settings on the page use down button to move through settings, and then back button, otherwise use right arrow to move to next page.

One thing I found when I was tuning to another satellite (2nd dish) although I had selected to new satellite name (Astra 23.5) when I had a problem I discovered the setting had gone back to Astra 28.2, I had to reset it a second time. Don't know if this is relevant in your case, but you might check that you are seeking Astra 28.2.

Hope this helps you.

Yes, for sure: go to the channel setup section and there's an option to change the LNB power settings. In the Auto Scan section where you choose the satellite (I choose single satellite) beneath which is antenna setup. Select antenna setup, and the first item after this is the LNB power setting, while highlighted just press OK to toggle between on and off

Have you set the parameters correctly? You need to tell the TV the LO frequencies of your LNB. You also have to select to power the LNB. Most sky box LNBs are 9.75 / 10.6Ghz. Hope this helps. (Not in UK but picking up Astra 28.2 with the TV)

Hello again guys,

I wonder if anyone can give me a clue. I am using the Astra satellite through the built in Sat receiver and found that the HD channels were all over the place.
I then found the Channel Edit settings and arranged the main channels in the 7 Favourite slots available.

Now when I try to scroll past those 7 fave channels it doesn't let me go any further down the listings but loops me back to the No.1 Fave channel.

Has anyone dealt with this ? Or could give me some tips tip with regard to setting up with best Satellite or how to deal with channel issue I'm having?

Thanks in advance.

Honestly? Well I genuinely think this TV is amazing value and is really very good. I am now using it as my main TV, and I am really very pleased with the picture quality, the flexibility (variety of inputs and so on) ... and the blacks are really good too.

Having looked at similar sized 4K TVs in the shops most of which were at least twice the price of this Hisense (including a Philips one that I didn't make a note of because it wasn't all that impressive), I think I made the right choice in buying. But to actually say it is better than any other model is really subjective, isn't it?

I was a tiny bit disappointed with the picture quality when viewed from wide angles, but I have to admit I'm not likely to want to watch TV at those angles because of the perspective. So, overall, I'd recommend it.

I know for certain that HDMI3 (central back of TV) is marked 4K 60fps - which presupposes that this is one of the two HDMI 2.0 inputs Hisense says this TV has. I used HDMI3 for testing 4K from my PC and I had no problems with playback. I couldn't test 60fps because my ADM setup won't support it. I think that your your motherboard will also influence what you can get out.

I run a WQHD monitor quite happily, but hadn't had anything to test true 4K on until this TV. So I can't give you any further advice because I just don't have the knowledge. Sorry.

Thanks for the detailed advice it is much appreciated i did try both VLC & MPC-HC both dont play the DVD only one that does is the default Powerdvd 14 however it plays havoc with the screen goes green then pixaletd all over like a pixlated blanket then full green screen all within seconds , i have to end task it to stop it , yes the card is 1GB, i dont know how to offset it to the GPU i will have a look to see how to do that , but i wonder i the message was about the frame buffer size it only came up once no more i wasn't able to replicate it
GAVINLEWISHUKD
9 Jun 16 1 #240
It should display at the full 4096x2160 but only at 30Hz due to the HDMI 1.4. If the codec for playback is supported (try using VLC or MPC-HC) then is should play fine (if the video is offset to the GPU) the only other issue might be the framebuffer size. But if you have a 1gb card or higher it shouldn't be an issue.

Rather than spending more now it may be better waiting and maybe upgrading to a new GPU in the future. The low end Polaris 11 part will have much higher performance and low power use and will have support for HDMI 2.0 with HDR and HLG (BBCs upcoming HDR standard, which will end up being the UK standard).
alan2simms
9 Jun 16 #239
Thanks kind of suspected it was something to do with the card :disappointed: no hidef blue rays till then i spouse of course lower quality older blue rays play well , any ideal why it says 4096x2160 in display resolution -recommended is it safe to try to use it do you know?

Thanks it seems to Suddenly have sorted itself without me doing anything , i too have an AMD radeon R7 System (discrete) on HDMI2.0 cable, It Even shows 4096x 2160(as recommended- this is the maximum capability of the card as stated in the specs) however i cant select that as the screen shows up as 2 sections, however now it only shows up as 30Hz and not 60Hz, consequently i can play hi-def blue rays media it gets pixalated all over with a message displaying display refresh rate is different from selected rate :o any idea what is going on?? thanks

I tried this successfully. I used a 4K grade HDMI cable, plugged into 'HDMI 3' on the TV. It worked okay. Your Windows system needs to be able to output graphics in 4K - that's down to your graphics card or CPU's capabilities. (My PC CPU is an AMD A10-7850K 4Ghz APU with Radeon R7 Graphics built in, so it runs 4K at 25fps without a graphics card.)

From a subjective point of view this TV does not appear to have significantly different off axis viewing characteristics to many other LCD sets I have viewed. I'm never quite sure what the "viewing angle" figures really mean for LCD TVs and monitors since most are fairly poor when you view from more than 30 degrees off axis with poor black levels, backlight clouding issues and increasingly washed out colour.

I've finally got BBC iPlayer to work on my TV. I'd already done several factory resets and not got it to work, however yesterday I decided that I would do a last reset and if it didn't work the TV was going back. Hi allena!

Thanks for your response, I haven't actually viewed my TV from a side angle as where it is situated in the corner of my room doesn't allow that view easily.
The reason why I want to mount it on the wall is because I don't have so many cables now because of the great features of this TV.
I got rid of my Sky box because I can now plug the satellite dish straight into the TV, so that has made it so much more feasible to mount it on the wall. That will give me some free space that I can use better.

I want the option to turn the TV just for convenience more than anything else.

Hi Jordan2020. Welcome. Unfortunately I can't answer your question - hopefully someone else will - but your desire to have a wall bracket that allows tilting and turning made me wonder what the quality of your picture is when you look at the screen sideways on, rather than straight on? I am very happy with mine too, but the one thing that lets it down (not acquired in the UK) is the loss of picture quality when viewed at angles. I am wondering if there might be more than one version of panel used in this TV.

Unsure why the over cut of somethings...eg my shield tv over cuts but when using the built in free view there is none....well not when I watched the england game ITVHD.

Would guess it's depending on what device your using and the setting....just not had time to mess when it over cuts but can't see why it can't be sorted via setting on the tv / input device.

As for a lag on bbc iplayer....There was none for me....and tested on talktalk bb none fiber.

These settings will vary according to the input source. If this might help anyone, for the HDMI3 input from my Atemio Nemesis Satellite Receiver, the settings I prefer for PICTURE are:

Picture Mode = Cinema Day
Brightness = 53
Contrast = 38
Colour Saturation = 43
Backlight = 55
Dynamic Backlight Control = OFF
Tint = G1
Sharpness = 7
Adaptive Contrast = LOW **
Colour Temperature = WARM
Noise Reduction = MIDDLE**

** These I might change

I'm not a lover of high colour saturation.

No my BBC iPlayer still does not play, I have been in touch with Hisense and have given them information they requested regarding my ISP, Router/Modem, etc, but still waiting for them to get back to me.

No the YouTube app does not play at 4K resolution it works at max 1920x1080. For those who want to see for themselves, select the YouTube app>Left Click left into the menu>Select "Settings">scroll right till you see "Show Video Info" then click OK. Go back to Search and select a 4K video and play it and the video info including resolution it is playing at will be displayed.

I have downloaded 4K movie trailers from the 'net and played from USB and also played the Astra UltraHD Demos that you can get using the satellite tuner on this TV they play at 2160p and are pretty impressive.

Can't find any info on the panel technology but suspect it is IPS as it has similar characteristics to my IPS computer monitor, and the recent 50" Hisense UHD panels are defo IPS.

It is very interesting what you say about axis and black levels. I wonder if this is a IPS set?

Is there anything on the box confirm if it is IPS or AV panel?

Although viewing angles are better on IPS panel I prefer AV panel as the contrast and black levels are much better on AV panel.

Also does BBC iplayer now work on this unit?

What about Youtube 4k videos? Does it play these videos in native 4k resolution?

There are conflicting reports whether it plays youtube 4k videos or not and same with iplayer.

Any latest update would be nice as I am strongly considering this tv.

I took it back tonight as advised by the nice man at Hisense. They didn't have any in stock - I'm gutted. Have reserved another to collect tomorrow.
I also come from using a 720p panny to this and it was a major improvement I just couldnt handle seeing the banding! Hopefully the one I pick up tomorrow is ok.

No banding here and really impressed with it and even more so for the price
Still going to have a tweak with the setting but not had much time atm .....but tested some SD and HD stuff and HD looks great, but the SD was alot better than i expected.

No doubt if you wanna spend nearer 600-700 quid then there is better out there ,but last tv i had was a 720p panny about 7 yrs old....so to come from that,to this....wow.

Thats completely fantasy! The cheapest 4k may look better if the source is 4k but my 5 years old Sony wiped the floor with cheap Hitachi 4k on 1080p or HD.

The colours / brightness/ picture quality was 10 x times better on Sony than cheap 4K tv which I have sold it on.

My advice is dont buy any cheap rebadged 4k tv. Top quality 1080p would be always better than 4k.

I am still considering this Hisense as it does not appear to be a rebadged cheaply made tv but leaning towards Sony as I want to install Kodi.

If only this tv was Android to install Kodi

Hmmm, noticed an annoying issue with this TV, besides the lack of PIP.

It appears that the lcd panel is mounted a fair distance away from the front of the screen, so if looking at the screen straight on, certain elements of the GUI in Windows are obscured. e.g. the bar beneath taskbar icons cannot be seen unless looking low down at the bottom of the screen (from a normal seating position the edges disappear slightly).

Obviously not a problem usually but I need this to work with a pc also.

No, mine's still not working and not got had time to ring Hisense, probably do that tomorrow and see what they say. I can cast BBC iPlayer and a lot of the other things that this so-called "Smart" TV doesn't have like ITV Hub, etc., from my tablet. Well caved and picked one up - looks like it is 4:4:4 chroma, which is great. Major downside for me is no PIP from what I can tell. Might get in touch with Hisense to ask why such a useful feature is missing.

All in, the tv seems incredibly good quality for the price point. The screen seems as uniform as anything i've ever seen from Samsung / LG, the remote control is also more premium feeling than the various Samsung / LG's that I own.

I got this TV a couple of days ago. Still trying to set up picture to suit me, so far have not managed to acheive natural skins tones, far less picture settings options than the Samsung D5520 it replaces. Side by side the Sammy has better black levels on axis but Hisense is better off axis and it seems viewing angles are better.

HD upscaling from 720p, 1080i & 1080p seem fine, but from SD upscaling is quite poor. Definately turn off adaptive contrast and auto backlight as these are far too aggresive even at low settings.

Anyone having problems with BBC iPlayer? So far I can't get it to play anything. Can't see any way to update or re-install pre-installed apps. Also the selection of apps in the app store is dire!

PVR function works well on HD and also works in standby.

Is there a simple way to switch from Terrestrial to Satellite EPG? I can only manage it by going into the menu for channel setting and part way into the rescan options!

Yes please test the file called 'San Diego Clip.ts'

It is on the following websites for sample videos. San Diego clip is basically full hd scenery of sea and sound of waves. You need to download it on pc and then put it on usb stick then fingers cross to see if Hisense plays it from usb stick.

Many thanks. I am also surprised to read about black levels that you are happy with. Thats promising. I bought Hitachi 4k from Argos a couple months ago and sold it on because blacks were poor like grey and i didnt like it at all

So I won't touch rebadged Vestel tvs ever again but this Hisense sounds good if the deep black levels are acceptable and plays .ts files

If the picture quality especially blacks are par with Sony and Samsung then £299 for 4k hdr is no brainer!

Now you're saying something a bit different, which is more in line with the reality. I don't think anyone here was saying interpolated upscaling to 4K results in "razor sharp" results, just that the effect is better than no interpolation at all (pixel doubling). Sure, it's well known that any non-adaptive interpolation has to make a tradeoff between aliasing, halos and blur - at least one of the three will end up being made worse if you improve the other two. That doesn't mean you don't get an overall improvement still compared to no interpolation at all. I agree that deciding which is the "right" combination is somewhat subjective, but you seem to be saying you'd prefer trivial pixel doubling over any form of interpolation at all?!

Advanced adaptive interpolation techniques can improve all three of aliasing/halos/blur, but (as far as I'm aware, haven't really looked in to it) they typically require more processing power than current TVs can handle.
Alex_

I guess in regards to picture quality you cant get deep blacks as you would with Sony and Samsung range?

The 78cm is the width of the whole thing. The feet are closer underneath.
Darthballs
20 May 16 #97
widest point, edge to edge is just under 31" (78 cm)

20 May 16 #95
If it is using bicubic interpolation, you'll be well aware that this results in haloing, which is an undesirable image artifact.

Any increase in apparent sharpness in those pictures comes with the increase in visual artifacts (e.g. blurring, blocking and haloing). Hence why the writer concludes that any improvement in image quality is subjective.

Unfortunately, any algorithm which reduces one of these artifacts does so at the expense of others. For example, upscaling that reduces jagged edges might induce more blur, and upscaling that reduces halos might appear less sharp.

Bottom line is that you can't polish a turd and people claiming their PS4 etc is suddenly razor sharp etc in 4K are delusional.
HappyClown
20 May 16 3 #94
While you're correct in that there's no additional information available to the 4K result, there are plenty of ways to make intelligent use of what information is available to make a higher resolution image that looks significantly better than the original.

Well it pretty obvious that if you take an SD image and scale it to Full HD and 4K that the scaler has much less work to do to scale to Full HD.
But a good scaler on a 4k tv and a poor one on a 1080p set can make the difference seem less.
Also the size of the TV makes a big difference. A SD video on a 65" 1080p TV is likely to look considerably worse than the same image on a 40" 4k TV at the same distance due to having smaller and more pixels to smooth out the image.

But yes in essence there is no new data but how well the 'guessing' is done will greatly influence the picture.

what a clown, 2nd link (on google) with a video to help you understand:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4B95nnN2TOo
who said anything about adding more extra information, the filtering / upconversion with these new TVs will improve the image and it looks better, clearer and sharper (not full 4k quality definitely better)
you will see an improvement to the image

You're in la-la-land. The only process going on here is duplicating existing pixel data and then applying a sharpening filter to any edges the upscaler detects. It's a hilarious marketing exercise that fools people like you into thinking it's making something out of nothing.

http://uk.rtings.com/tv/reviews/by-resolution/4k-ultra-hd-uhd-vs-1080p-full-hd-tvs-and-upscaling-compared

"To present lower-resolution material on a 4k TV, the TV has to perform a process called upscaling. This process increases the pixel count of a lower-resolution image, allowing a picture meant for a screen with fewer pixels to fit a screen with many more. It’s important to remember that since the amount of information in the signal doesn’t change, there won’t be more detail present.

"The Vizio M’s upscaling resulted in a bit of added smoothness, but overall the two images look very similar. There isn’t any more detail in the upscaled picture than you can see in the native 1080p picture, so whether or not it looks better is entirely subjective."

"A 4k TV doesn't improve the picture quality of lower quality content like 1080p Blu-rays."

Simply put, a 1080p source will never look better on a 4K TV than on a 1080p TV.

what a clown, 2nd link (on google) with a video to help you understand:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4B95nnN2TOo

who said anything about adding more extra information, the filtering / upconversion with these new TVs will improve the image and it looks better, clearer and sharper (not full 4k quality definitely better)

you will see an improvement to the image

[quote][/You can't "upscale" a non-4k source, it won't look any better.

Please do explain to everyone how it is adding additional picture information to the original source image.

I'll help you, you cannot. The TV "upscaling" to 4K isn't adding any extra detail to the picture, because it can't. What it is doing is taking the lower resolution image and duplicating pixels and adding sharpening to that result.

All that means is that you're getting a stretched output with more visual artifacts.

Upscaling CANNOT add more detail than is already present.

I'd advise you not to commit such disrespectful comments in future, unless you want to end up looking like an ass again.

Can anyone tell me if this has an IPTV app. Similar to Smart IPTV on the LG and Samsung TV's?

Also been reading that some Hisense TV's allow the installation of .apk files in developer mode. Does this TV allow this?

How do I find out the full SMART functionality without buying?

what utter nonsense

I have this tv and it upscales (up conversion) /sd / hd to 4k, filters and improves the image (obviously not as good as running full on 4k but a drastic noticeable difference)

I have a 4k monitor without a 4k upscaler / filter and this monitor, you can see a drastic difference with the 4k upscale / filter / processing this TV does to improve the image

...where do these people come from

4k and UHD are the same thing which is 4 x the resolution of full HD. HDR is high dynamic range which gives better contrast and brightness at the same time to what you are watching, as far as I understand. I await the multitude of corrections as I'm no expert! PS, hope this helps.

All TV's need some tweaking here and there and there can be a massive difference in quality depending on what source you are putting through it.

Can't help you personally as I have not had a dedicated TV for a couple of years now but create a new Ask thread and try and get some help setting it up correctly, but they will need to know what exactly you are watching and how the source is connected.

Picked one of these up tonight. Been really impressed so far. 4K from YouTube looks incredible, HD feeds are pin sharp too. Even SD looks fine when sitting approx 8 feet away.

I bought this very model about 2 weeks ago from Argos,so far very impressed.
4 HDMI ports( 2 are 4k 60ps), HDR etc etc

Although not android, but does have an appstore with quite a few apps.

Sound is good too(with a bit of tweaking of settings).

Well worth it on my humble opinion.
