I had one, worked fine and never have us any grief. Be aware, though that got can't use Amazon Prime through it as Amazon have blocked them. Many shows on All4 and suchlike also won't cast due to licencing restrictions. " Usually the most popular ones. You can plug your laptop into the telly and watch it that way but you're not allowed to stream the same show to the same screen. Lawyers doing their best to inhibit the spread of technology. :smirk:

You can use the Cast Screen function to show whatever is playing on your tablet/phone. Works fine on my 4.4 tablet and chromecast 1. Not perfect quality, but as good as digital SD even with my ancient router.

You should be able to cast from a compatible phone or tablet, not sure about from a laptop.

Yes you can, mobile / tablet and laptop. Mobile and tablet will just cast the stream where the laptop will screen cast. You will also need to install local cast and a file needs adding to a folder using ES file explorer.

If your phone is capable of screen casting then you can cast anything at all, basically whatever is on the screen is cast. If your phone can't do that then no.

I have the first gen chromecast and haven't yet seen a reason to upgrade. Although I've since bought a fire stick, kodi box and a remix mini this is still an awesome bit of kit and a steal at fifteen quid.

Not sure this is a great deal as you can get 2nd gen for £23 from wuaki.tv. I've not upgraded yet but I struggle with WiFi signal on my 1st gen so am going to upgrade soon for the 5ghz WiFi.

.97 usually means clearance, and its not listed as available for delivery so its going to be whatever stock will be left in any given store.
Knowing PCW stock control is not always 100% accurate, what the system says they have in store may or may not be right depending if they can find them on the rather jumbled to me shop floor.

u cannot use kodi other than to cast.. It will not work like firetv or any other box.. Its like you are connecting to HDMI cable wirelessly. If ur pc or phone runs a movie , its like showing same movie on tv by casting it. In other boxes you can install apps and its stand alone

The Firestick is way better for Kodi because you can install it directly to the stick but you can't install it directly on the Chromecast.

Kodi and Fire stick is a different solution, Plex and Chromecast or any other app you cast the screen is a good solution. Kodi is good but isn't the only media player / sharing platform.

Whilst I kinda agree with you, the newer one is not really a similar price is it? Cheapest the v2 normally sells for is £22-ish from Wuaki, and that's 50% more than this deal for very similar kit.

Chromecast model 2 is £30.
To get 4k you need to spend approx £80, as a entry point this is good value for media playback.
Neither Chromecast does 4k, nor Firestick, Fire TV with 4k costs £79.99 so

Guys.. getting way techie now, was originally a simple observation, now is mine is bigger than yours war... anyway, my situation as a non-geek.. have ipad & iphone and want to stream stuff to tv.. not games or HBO etc, just stream from net, have nice Samsung 42", about 6 yrs old so not sure if has usb ports.. but believe some fit to hdmi port.. simple advice please ;-)

depends what you are streaming and from where. If its videos ON the iphone/ipad I don't think you can connect to a chromecast, you need a recent (and semi-decent spec) android device for that. SOME apps on iOS will stream to chromecast... Netflix, BT Sport, All4 etc. but not all. You can't AIRPLAY to a chromecast. You can airplay to an apple tv or a fireTV stick (after installing free app).

edit* - I've not tried it but the chromecast ios app may let you cast but don't hold me to that. I'd recommend a FireTV Stick personally, it can receive casts/streams AND has access to entire android app library to run things natively with a remote.

Ive just done review/compare of chrome/fire/roku.. seems fire is the winner.. id be streaming stuff from web.. did it using airplay through my ipad to apple tv box at friends, hence i want my own.. thanks for advice ;-)

I've never really understood if Chromecast does anything different what my xbox does. If it can mirror what's on my actual phone screen all the time then that would be amazing but if it's just stuff like Netflix, YouTube, iPlayer then I can cast to my TV through the xbox anyway (or just use the xbox itself). Does it do anything else?

They provide a mobile client to allow casting from phones (as well as support within individual apps e.g. youtube or podcast apps). Also there's support for casting from chrome.
Yeah you might get issues, unfortunately it's more an issue with the super hubs than the chrome cast. Mine was so bad I just bought a decent dedicated router and turned the hub to just a router. Been pretty great since then. :smile:

Its not mirroring though it can do that, its casting.... so you can turn your phone off and e.g iPlayer will carry on playing (so your not using your battery).

Not sure it's a great deal really. There were lots of deals for v1s around £20 when they were current gen (I bought it 2 years ago for £24 + £5 credit) and as mentioned above, it is likely to be 2 gens behind soon. You really do need a strong wifi signal (not more than 1 wall in between) for it to work well.
The other consideration is how useful these are. If you have subs to things like netflix, nowtv, BT sport etc then yes you can take advantage of what it offers. I'm a bit disappointed that we haven't seen that much development in terms of features or what it can do. You still need add-on apps or casting your screen (if supported by your phone) if you want to cast local media.
If you are already a chromecast user and just want a spare for a bedroom, etc then yes this would be useful but if you haven't already got one I'd recommend waiting a couple of months to see what features will be available in gen3 before deciding how to go (and gen 2 will be around this price by then anyway)

Please be warned that this doesn't work well at all with the Virgin media 'super hubs'. I had to buy the new chromecast which also supports 5Ghz and that works perfectly!

I purchased the 1st gen one via HUKD and it works a treat, excellent for iplayer, 4OD and sites where movies/tc series can be streamed for free :sunglasses:. Paid £20 for the dongle, + £15 GP credit and 3 months now tv trial, that was a better deal in my eyes.

No it is not. You can buy much cheaper from computer exchange and wuaki and others. I bought for £20 from John Lewis and got £20 Google credit with it. Anyway I gave up on it as it does not have ethernet lan port and picture quality is very poor compared to Amazon TV box and nvidia tv box. I would not recommend anyone to buy Google Chrome cast or Amazon fire stick as they degrade picture quality due to hardware limitations. Basically you pay for cheaper price in picture quality.

Even if you can have slow lan port through USB 2.0, you cannot upgrade ram memory or the processor. So these sticks can never be as compared to new TV boxes with more ram, better processor, 4k, usb 3 & gigabit ethernet. I would not even buy one now if i get it for cheap.

Loved my Chromecast, but Virgins new hubs aren't compatible apparently. Have had to upgrade to a new one which is a bit annoying. Really hot deal though, I would vote a dozen times if I could.

The Chromecast does allow the entire screen to be mirrored to the TV although only certain Android devices are supported.
I prefer using the Chromecast over the Xbox or similar because I can use my phone as a remote control, I find it's a much better interface for going into Youtube or Netflix to find the videos I want rather than using the Xbox controller and interface with a clumsy software keyboard. Also my Chromecast is always good to go, no waiting for 2GB system updates or needing the YT app updated.

You need a device to cast from, phone, tablet, Chrome browser on PC / Mac.... You need a Wifi router, you don't need the internet but depends what your streaming i.e local content or e.g iPlayer which needs the internet.

I bought a 19" Bush TV from someone on Facebook for £20, I stuck my Chromecast in the HDMI socket and I have it setup in the kitchen. Excellent now, instead of being bored cooking stuff in the kitchen I have some entertainment setup streamed from my phone :smiley:

You don't to do that as model 3 is dual band so you can use both at once. Disabling 5ghz won't do anything to help, this Chromecast will only use 2.4ghz. If you have the newer Chromecast you should use 5ghz, it has better range, more bandwidth and faster.

The best thing about the Chromecast is you can use apps like Cartoon hd, Megabox and popcorn time and watch anything you want. You can use Kodicast to play Kodi but the apps I mentioned are far easier to use and more reliable.
I know u can sideload apps to the fire stick but I imagine they aren't easy to navigate with that remote control where as navigating from your phone via Localcast it's very easy to control.
Also, if you use the Chrome browser on your laptop add the extension videocast and you play all the movies from your computer on to the TV via your Chromecast.
