It looks like you need to spend $30/year just to make it useful though (Hole GPS). I wish I had known that before I bought it. I don't even play golf.
If you aren't interested in subscribing to their 'Pro' plan I wouldn't even bother. I took the 10p hit so you don't have to.

Maybe not completely useless...

I use GolfPad GPS and the freebie version works for me. The free version doesn't do hanidicap-adjusted scoring, but it does distance measurements to every point on the course, hole flyover, and pretty much everything else that I need.

It's interesting that you say that. Their website clearly states that distance measurements to hazards (points on the course that aren't the pin) and hole flyover previews are only available as 'Pro' features.
I know that when you install the app you get a week of the 'Pro' features included, but you've presumably been using the app for longer than that?
I only ask because both my dad and brother golf and I'd like to actually know what it does without the subscription before showing it to them.
I think it's probably worth it just for recording shots and the distance to the pin, but if it did anything more (some kind of hole preview/map) that would be great as well.

Use VPAR instead. It's free, better user interface, and provides real time scoreboards so you can easily see who's winning. Used it for a Ryder Cup style weekend with 11 mates, and was amazing.

VPAR seems to be for the fruit-based phone community only

I was using it for a couple of months towards the end of last summer (the last time I played), and as far as I remember those features were still available at the end of the period. Will know for sure when I play again next week....
