A great price but I suspect you get what you pay for. It looks good but is on the small size and may have thin metal. No reviews on the Homebase website for it either. I am looking for garage shelving but will probably look at proper Dexion shelving.

Ive been looking for some sheet metal for gardening - to create a below-ground barrier to stop goat weed coming in underground from next door. Wondering if I might be able to flatten these shelves and use them for this purpose. Seems an affordable option... Is this a crazy idea? (And are there more affordable options?)

ordered from Blackpool supposed to be sixty odd in stock when I ordered. They've just rang to say they can't fulfill the order! Typical Homebase hope they go bust
Waterboy8535
20 May 16 #31
Because they, as do I, already have 4 shelf storage shelving and it's over 6ft. I also thought I'd get some more until I noticed how short and shallow they are.
It's their opinion, so why feel the need to be petty, and with the shouty exclamation mark?
Waterboy8535

Bought 4 of these last week. Quite a few bolts but, very rigid when constructed. Have lined my garage walls with them.

For me a bargain, and you cannot complain - significantly better than you think. Height is made from bolting two pieces together. You will be pleasantly surprised.

EDIT: I will be buying a few more I think for the shed.

20 May 16 #37
Just purchased 4. They had one on display so can confirm decent quality and pretty sturdy. Can't go wrong at this price. They had a similar item that had wooden shelves and steel frame for 13 quid but wasn't as good (easy build no bolts)

Seen these yesterday in store, not that big, not greatly strong shelves but a good deal for light storage, well worth the price.
Gollywood
20 May 16 2 #39
But the picture can only be misleading if they had, say a 6ft guy standing next to them - then you could argue that it was misleading.

If you buy these & take a photo of them in isolation, and post it here, it will look exactly the same as the photo above.

(No exclamation marks were harmed during the making of this reply)

I ordered one - but when I saw the actual thing in store - I didn't bother.
Quite flimsy.
No cross supports at the back or anything.
I could bend the supporting struts over between 2 fingers
Yes I know it is cheap, but I would rather pay more and get something more substantial.
Others may be happy with the quality - which is good enough for them.

I went to pick up two this morning for the garage, I changed my mind after seeing them, super flimsy and I doubt it would hold much without folding under the weight, would be ok for storing pillows though. No straps or anything to give them extra stability, you get what you pay for I guess.

I saw this at homebase today and it looked a little thin compared to the shelving rack at £59.99. obviously the price difference means there will be a difference in quality, but i thought it would be suitable for displaying my plants on. it should be good for power tools, nuts, bolts etc but id think twice about putting a transformer on it.

Purchased two of these this afternoon and just finished setting them up in the garage. They are solid when fully assembled and seem to hold plenty of weight. Ive got toolboxes, a chest and some heavy jacking gear on one of them and there seems to be no issues. Maybe they seem a little flimsy on assembly but I was impressed with the finished result. You could actually, if you purchased three and used the third to split in half, you could increase the size of the first two by another half. Two full ones on top of each other would probably be dangerous due to the height. Maybe if you fixed the top to the wall or something?

If you zoom into the picture you can see holes in the side frames. You just need some nuts bolts and washers of the right diameter and length. A couple of spanners, or pliers and a spanner, and you can bolt them to each other. Should be doable for £10 including tools if you yes the deals on here.

Just build them both and sit them side by side, any bolts you have spare push through both sits to lock them together.

Cracking price agreed but seriously think Homebase need to get on top of their reservations system. Considering they are (failing that 'were' as think they've been sold onto a third-party) an Argos company their reservations system is shocking. Lost count of the amount of occasions great offers have been reserved for collection only to find a). They cannot find stock failing that b). Stock is damaged therefore unsaleable.

Good price, but really this is all they are worth or certainly no more than a tenner. It 'seems' cheap because everywhere storage solution shelving is nowadays nothing but a rip-off.
One plus for this is it's galvanised, so no rust.

Some places will charge 30 quid for something as 'simple' as this, and that is what it is... VERY SIMPLE SHELVING!
I have bought loads of these over the years when cheap. It's only in recent years they escalated in price.

Even Homebase has in store another very similar made by Keter, it has an extra shelf BUT will hold LESS in weight than this because it's made of PLASTIC!!!, but **** will buy it in preference simply because of a name Keter. Idiots abound today everywhere. The braindead will buy the Keter because it says 'HEAVY DUTY' ...but it will hold 50 kgs LESS than the product (this one) that is virtually half the price! The braindead. Today they are everywhere!
Here is the Keter one should you be one of those ****! LOL.
http://www.homebase.co.uk/en/homebaseuk/keter-5-tier-heavy-duty-shelving-783942?_$ja=tsid:49590|cid:498058216|agid:29148373696|tid:pla-50605093615|crid:112288525336|nw:g|rnd:1404595617063311624|dvc:c|adp:1o2&gclid=Cj0KEQjwjoC6BRDXuvnw4Ym2y8MBEiQACA-jWdsQ5oo6fKVKKSssN3B3-VP0Zb_LXIdOJwPvSbW2VxIaAq8t8P8HAQ

JohnOFarrell
21 May 16 #116
it's not that idiotic to buy the plastic one, it's taller, deeper and has more shelves so will actually hold more lighter stuff than the metal shelves and it just slots together, no bolts or tools needed. Be a better option for my Nan for instance who would use it for gardening tools, weedkiller's etc.
I agree that shelving and storage can be a rip off though!

It is quite thin metal - slightly more flimsy than the old Quality Street tins before they went plastic. 50Kg per shelf would need to be distributed VERY evenly over the surface. The photos show what happens if not.

Haha! Thank you for your suggestion/observation. I will explore some options - talking to Homebase via Twitter to see if they can arrange delivery for example. They are at least trying and responsive, gotta give them credit!

They are quite heavy and besides that it would be awkward getting on and off the bus,2 would definitely be too much for you and 1 is pushing it,

I'd go for a taxi if you've noone that could pick them up for you

I'm quite a strong chap and can confirm that two of these are awkward to carry. They are plastic wrapped and so slide against each other. ! minute across the car park was fun ... and i got a cut on my hand from a sharp edge lol. I don't think you should try to carry for 10 mins.

Mine were in cardboard boxes with logo etc, everything inside secure. Took 6 on a small shopping trolley and used a train to get back home. No cuts to my hands.
1 box might be ok for a woman, but 2 is a bit too much though..

Also checkout the much sturdier 4 shelf, black snap-together one with wooden board shelves for £13 odd. It'll save you a lot of time constructing, and won't fold over when it's full, which these ones might well.

Shelves are steep, meh, but £13 for a sturdy lock together/pull-apart set is, IMHO, the real hot deal.

These 2 were side by side at my local, and a little wobble while pressing on the top shelf and you can tell these would collapse with more than a couple of board games on, I have two very similar, pain to build, then they fold up on you

Have reserved 4 of these. Can anybody tell me how these are flatpacked, i.e. Will they fit in back of car ok, or should I get someone in a van to lift them? Thanks!!

Package is quite small,it'll fit in a car boot easily,approx 28 x 12 inches

Might be a good idea to reinforce the edges with a strip of wood or metal under the shelves edges to give extra strength and stop buckling. Depending on what you use them for.

For the price they are great.

Recently purchased some shelves from Aldi £30 ('normal' size) comparable below

H)180, (W)92, (D)46cm
H)137, (W)71, (D)31cm

For the price these are good. But personally for the footprint I would be after more storage hence why I went for some 'normal' sized ones. The larger ones are also 5 shelf and take 175kg per shelf, I have two tires with 18" rims on the top which the smaller units probably wouldn't handle.

I picked up two units and carried them to the bus, transferred buses, then carried them to the house. Two days later I had my baby. Trust me neither experience was as difficult as I imagined it could be. Also I could have managed two more units with my free hand, plus I had other shopping and a backpack. They are flat packed in small boxes, not very deep.
