You can pre-register your interest for this card being launched nationwide in the summer.

You link it to your bank card (similar to paypal for instance) and can then use it for bank withdrawals and purchases abroad (worldwide, excluding UK) which you then don't pay exchange fees on as it debits your account in Pounds Sterling. The exchange rate charged on my Trial card was the Visa exchange rate so much better than buying foreign currency also.

The trial was launched last year so you can find last year's deal and more info by searching 'supercard' on HDUK. It has been great for me after using it in USA, Vietnam and Cambodia to name a couple of places and it really impressed me so thought I would actually try sharing for the 1st time.

It comes with an App which allowed me to see exactly what I was being debited for transactions, what i had saved by using it and allowed me to only have the card active whilst travelling.

Sorry if I've missed anything, as I said, never tried posting before I just took advantage of a couple of deals including this one thanks to someone else who posted

Is this still the best card to use for Spain? Have previously used this without issue linked to my uk bank card at Santander?

by leaving money in my current account I earn 3-5% interest so would loose this toping up a pre-loaded card. revolute limits spend to £500 per month before it starts charging a fee, I tend to take a big annual holiday in which the hotel alone takes this much without any other spending. This alone means Revolut would have to be used with something else and it says they may start charging after 1 year
benlondon
15 Jun 16 #64
Revolut also have a proven track record, it's hardly difficult to pre-load a card through an app, and then withdraw what remains directly back to your debit card. If you know anything about this part of the financial industry you will know that all client funds are ring fenced i.e. if the firm goes belly up your money is safe.

If you're happy paying a poor exchange rate when the true interbank rate is on offer then that's up to you.
benlondon
15 Jun 16 #62
Why not just use the revolut card, you get the interbank exchange rate and no fees also, you can't get a better rate than that
sylv to benlondon
15 Jun 16 #63
1. Travelex has a proven track record.
2. You have to preload the Revolut card. The Supercard takes only what's spent, when it's spent.

I just got details today confirming the new card has launched. Haven't read all the small print yet but it does say foreign transactions are free but they will now charge an ATM withdrawal fee at 2.99% so I think I prefered my trial version but will still use this. I prefer to use this than apply for different bank accounts that might not give me the interest rates of my current accounts.

I have a clarity but will sign up for this linked to a credit card as back-up, wont use it for cash machine withdrawals but for use in restaurants and such it makes a good backup, bypassing credit card fees. Ooooh nasty, use this and you give up your section 75 rights. Two words. Todd Shat.

The catch :disappointed:
Thar
14 Jun 16 #58
I've finally had time to read the small print and realised that the new Supercard is using the Mastercard rate for foreign transactions rather than the Visa rate, so that means a slightly better exchange rate.

Can't find a Mastercard app similar to the Visa Travel Tools app that gave the exchange rate in advance of a transaction though.

If I have a Nationwide Flexplus account for 0% commission overseas cash withdrawals, and a Halifax Clarity MasterCard for 0% commission non-Sterling card payments, why do I need one of these Supercards? Am I missing something?
Thar to qwerta369
14 Jun 16 1 #57
Not really worth it for you then. Halifax Clarity gives a slightly better rate than the Supercard, £1 = €1.265, compared to Supercards £1 €1.252, so you're better off wth that. I don't have a Clarity so use the Supercard with Nationwide Flexplus as a backup.

This is what I'm saying. Supercard don't use Travelex's rate, they use the Visa exchange rate. I was in Portugal recently and drew from ATM's. The rate I got was the rate quoted on the Visa Travel Tools app here.

This is Travelex now

http://i64.tinypic.com/jkx4pj.jpg

This is the rate you get on Supercard

http://i63.tinypic.com/2niy2ol.png

The Supercard uses a better rate, not quite as good as Halifax, but not worth me changing to them.
zebrum
8 Jun 16 #50
They use their site to make them look better than they are, if you went to a Travelex right now and look at the numbers on display you'll see they take 10% off the real rate.
Thar
7 Jun 16 #49
Currently Travelex is coming up as €1 = £1.254 whereas the Supercard is €1 = £1.265, so not that horrific compared to Halifax Clarity's £1.273.
zebrum
7 Jun 16 #48
Travelex's rate is usually horrific compared to the inter-bank rate offered by credit card companies.

What's annoying me most is that it expires (the trial card) right in the middle of my holiday, and they aren't even taking applications for the new one so I'll be left high and dry (and have to rely on an MBNA Amex card which isn't quite as good).

Yeah I'm away next week so will be OK, but i hope the new card is up and running by the time we have our family holiday in August.

I'm sorry mate but you're wrong. I've used to to buy various things on line whilst in the UK in $ or €, the pin is not required in this case. e.g latest purchase was Ryanair return flights purchased in €'s. If you have one, you haven't been using it to its full potential.
PointsHunter
7 May 16 #41
For that you need the Curve Card....had for about a month now. Same idea as Supercard (I also did the pilot). Both are good. Supercard cheaper for foreign transactions. Curve lets you pay using Amex in places that don't ordinarily.

Curve has £35 one-off fee but in my opinion worth it as I'm always after the credit card points. TBH -the fees on curve are much lower than charging directly to my UK issues debit/credit card - so for convenience I now use Curve everywhere. Can switch payment cards on the app easily but mine is firmly linked to my BA Amex Premium Plus Card!

Saved a fortune in transactions fees in USA last month, but...
the transactions appear on your source credit/debit card as "Tuxedo Money, Chester", which MBNA thought was fraudulent so they kept blocking our card.
parky200

This can be linked to a Visa or MasterCard Credit card, not just a debit card. This allows you to also earn any rewards you would get by using your credit card.

Re above comments. I used it online whilst in UK for my Esta visa application and also a couple of other US websites with no problem. ATM fees depends on individual cashpoint machine like it does in UK. In my experience they always warn if they will charge. HSBC Bank cashpoints were a good bet. link I gave to pre-register was following or in 2nd comment but for some reason when loaded

Had a transaction declined when I used it Singapore but it still appeared in triplicate on my account. Took months to sort it out and customer service seemed to be run by one guy who kept repeating the same incorrect information, clearly reading from a script. Paid with another card and found the transaction cost were identical on both cards including charges. Would not use it again.

Great card. Faultless throughout France, Greece, Austria and Spain. A bit glitchy in Venice. This for cash and a Halifax Clarity for purchases do for me.

6 May 16 #27
A question for those already trialling this card:

If you purchase something in dollars from a US website (while being physically located in the UK), does that count as a foreign transaction or must you be on holiday abroad?

Thanks
Thar to cb-uk
6 May 16 1 #28
You don't have to be abroad. You just need to pay in a foreign currency when in the UK.
thelatics to cb-uk
6 May 16 #31
That won't work, as the card is used with a pin number, its not for online transactions.

It's only any good for in person where you can type your pin and at ATMs.

The people mentioning declined transactions may not have appreciated that and it may explain some failures (but I appreciate it may not be perfect).

I was on the trial too. Used it abroad in supermarkets, hotels & ATMs. No transaction or ATM fees. It doesn't treat foreign ATM transactions as cash advances either. Whilst the app was buggy, the basic product was good.
Also used the card for non-sterling payments online. Overall a good experience with no costs.

Great card, but echo-info others about it getting declined far too often.

After asking the customer support line they say it happens if the terminal takes longer than 3 seconds to receive card authorisation as a security precaution, so apparently depends on the connection speed of the terminal.

Was fine when merchants have a good internet connection and online, but when they have those old dial ups it didn't work at all.

We had this on the trial. Works brilliantly for taking cash out at ATM. We did have a few issues paying for good in shops. I would recommend this for cash but have a back up such as Halifax clarity for stir transactions. We tend to work with cash abroad as we have had our card skimmed a couple of times in Europe.

Reading1800 to dvdphile
6 May 16 1 #5
But looking at Revolut, that needs you to add money to a wallet, IE you are transferring money out of your account and into an account held by Revolut. With Supercard you are simply linking your debit card so you retain the money.
dannyboy007 to dvdphile
6 May 16 #15
I have both. Revolut only allows you £500 cash withdrawal per month. then 2% fees and you have to load the card first. Supercard they take from your account what you spend and you can link your credit card. Not only debit card like Revolut

6 May 16 #13
pilot was bad for me card got refused and blamed the link card as it was a joint account which is nonsense as each card holder has own card with separate numbers doh.

i had to pay deposit for our wedding and got refused twice as getting married abroad.

In the end had to resort to getting a thomascook cashpassport in order to pay the wedding in the end.

The app is buggy as hell a nightmare if you want to unlink a card and days for customer support to help.

Good in theory but they nees to sort out all the issues the current supercards expire 6th june
adi0604
6 May 16 #12
While super card exchange rate was great in the EU, not so good in Far East. Got better rate changing money with local bank.
Also had to them chase every single time for refunds, at times they took over 3 weeks before crediting money to my link card.
Card is good just hope they learned from pilot.
