I picked up the xps 13 base model. Some people might debate the specs but it's probably the best 13 incher for my needs. Some of the other laptops on offer are nice too

Glad to hear! Even with the discount, 800 had me a little anxious about the spend but hopefully it's worth it. Before that I'd just received a lenovo with similar specs but the build quality is so poor I'm sending it back.

They're good but they're certainly not cheap second-hand, these seem to hold their value as well as equivalent Macbooks - probably because they're well-built and decent quality. For all the people who say XPS aren't worth the money, I would disagree, I'd pay more for a modern XPS over a similar spec high-end Inspiron any day.

I would say it depends on if you have any current apple products that you want to sync and also if you want to play some games. Can't see the gpu on this one but it's probably better than the MacBook. I'm a big windows fan but bought a MacBook Air when in the USA a few years ago and it's been fantastic so would thoroughly recommend.

I use Windows, Linux and OSX so I'm impartial to a point, a DJ friend of mine bought a Macbook Pro recently (last month) from John Lewis for £1199, to be honest I didn't think it was worth anywhere near that much money. You really have to decide if you want OSX or Windows as there's pros and cons to either. I'd much rather use OSX anyday over Windows 10, but that's my personal preference. I wouldn't pay £1199 for a Macbook Pro either which again is my personal preference, the keyboard I thought was shocking on it, absolutely terrible.
I would try and see for yourself, go to John Lewis or Apple store and try a Macbook. Also if you're a programmer using Python and Ruby you have a head start with OSX as the interpreter for both is built in to the system accessible by Terminal, it's not a big issue to get it working on Windows, but the Mac it's boot up and you're ready to go.

Far better off going for the XPS 15 (unless you need the portability of 13.3"). Another £90 and you get a 960m (£892) and one of the lightest i5/960m/15" laptops around.

There is a touch version of the XPS 13. I had a non-touch version when it first came out and undoubtedly was one of the best laptops I've ever used (in twenty years of IT). The only accessory I had to buy to compliment the device was a USB to Ethernet adapter.

Do *not* buy this laptop if you're considering doing any sort of photo/video work on it - the adaptive contrast makes this type of work impossible, and it cannot be disabled. I bought the 13", and whilst it's a great machine for a good price (and so small!), it isn't suitable for photo work.
On the other hand I'm looking to replace a six year old Dell XPS, simply because the thing is physically falling apart due to years of hard use, but every single component is still running like a charm, and my biggest problem is that I'm literally finding it hard to beat the spec for a reasonable price even six years later.
So YMMV.

In all the years I have been servicing equipment, Dell has had no higher failure rates than any other brand.
The hard drive and battery are the two most prone items to fail if the user has certain usage pattens like moving the laptop around a lot while it is powered on or frequently changing the charging status or even letting the battery overheat.
Swapping to a SSD will help with frequent movement as they are not prone to shock damage unlike their mechanical brothers. Allowing better ventilation will help with battery longevity.

Well luckily for you, this doesn't use a hard drive and battery lasts well into 2 digits, also it is easily replaceable if you find a need down the line.

I am debating with myself whether to get an xps 15 or 13.
15 is obviously more powerful of the two and I do like to game there and then, but I also intend to build a gaming pc at some point (those new nvidias seem pretty awesome) but 15 also suffers from bad battery life, at least for the qhd version I would take. Anyone has some advice about it?

It looks like this may now have been fixed, unless I'm missing something?:
Dell laptop batteries are notoriously bad (experience of owning 3 generations of Dell laptops). They'll generally work fine for about a year, after which time they'll need replacing. Don't think I'll be going for another Dell after my current XPS 15 dies.
Something to keep in mind.
kent93
10 May 16#52
From what I remember you have to speak to Dell chat first and tell them you want student discount. Then they give you some reference number and you have to email Dell again (from your student email address) to confirm you've talked to Dell Chat. Then they'll send you a 10% code that you can use in the next month.
hmm i've had a opposite experience i have owned different gens of Dell xps 17, 15 and also precision 15" for the last decade and have not had the battery wearing out in a year. 3 years use wears the battery 50% in my own experiences bearing in mind these were all high spec (causing heat) and heavily used pretty much 24/7.

Nah, tried it.
They do an occasional bump in student discounts, it was 20% last year and 15% last month (for a short while, ie weekend).
The best xps 15 I have found was for about 850£ with QHD, i7, 256GB SSD, 8GB of ram (single channel so you can add another :sunglasses:, refurbished. I am a bit sorry for not taking a plunge at that, but couldn't decide at the point...
The cheapest I have seen them was about 700£ for the base version (with student discount).
Anyway, definitely worth a look if you are not insistent on "new".

If you can wait a couple of months I would. It is heavily rumoured they will be refreshed in June/July with Skylake CPUs, and since it's been around 4 years since the current design was introduced there's a good chance there will be a shake-up there too (USB-C/TB3.1 etc).

Well I've just ordered the 13 9350-7765 (i7 QHD) for £977. Bargain really.
Some comments on here about haswell/previous processors in this, not skylake - but the fact it states 9350 means it has to be skywell. Specs checked several times vs dell website, all up to date on everything. If it's not, it goes back! Free returns too which is good.
So far, quidco has tracked at £40.73 for some reason.

21 May 16#84
If I had the money I'd buy another one in a heartbeat, it's such a nice laptop.
It's replaced a Vaio Pro 13 which got a couple of broken keys and a very loud broken fan after 2.5 years hard work.
This feels so much more sturdy, solid, and premium, and it's the first laptop I've ever used where I can actually use the touchpad without wanting to throw it out the window. Can seriously see this replacing my desktop (3930K) for everyday use.
First peripheral I've bought is a basic USB-C -> HDMI adapter to let me use an external monitor. Was looking at the Dell docks but they're quite pricey and only a couple of USB ports in addition to the HDMI so wasn't really necessary.

Can I just double check with you that the processor you received was i7-6500u or i7-6560u? Can you check on your machine to make sure? The dell website lists the 6560u as the only option beyond the i5, so I'm wondering if this is the case for the MS store.

However it's also a hell of a lot heavier than the XPS 13, I was fortunate to see them side by side in Dell Bracknell, if mobility is what you want the XPS 13 is the answer, if performance, gaming etc. It's the XPS 15. Considering the 6560U really only adds a better GPU (Iris 540 vs 520) - and the 6500U has a slightly higher base clock of 2.5Ghz vs 2.2Ghz, and runs more efficiently due to the lower spec GPU, I'm happy I've got the 6500U and not the 6560U

Not convinced there is a patch available to fix this at all so I'm out. Macbook Pro it will have to be.
Good motivation to get some extra work in.

The processor and memory type are different...
Possibly you somehow stumbled on 1st gen model, this here is second gen...
Quidco has tracked at the same (random) £40.73 too.
Well I've unpacked it, windows 10 is doing a massive update, but I can confirm it is
a) the most delightful laptop I've ever seen
b) skylake
I ordered the dell sleeve for it on amazon too, £22 or so.
At the moment I'm trying hard to resist buying another one for my partner!!!!
Hmmm maybe the xps15?
I could have swore the dell site showed 6500 just yesterday though?
@daviebroon, any idea on the differences between the older USB 3 docks, and the newer USB C / Thunderbolt docks?

Rang up and there investigations will take up to 8 days, meanwhile I need a laptop to take to the euros with me and have no money.
I will have to order another one with my rent money till they refund me, I've asked for some compo for this but not holding my breath.
£696 will be my final price after the discount then a £75 voucher for keeping my money from original laptop so long and quidco has tracked at £35.
Also... HD display driver continuously crashes every 15mins, very annoying!
