I noticed when looking at the cashback eligibility forms on Dell that there were 2 cashback periods (1/2/16 - 30/4/16 & 1/5/16 - 31/7/16) so kept an eye on ebuyer

Yes any low-moderate TDP graphics card should be fine - the T20 has a full PCI Express 3.0 slot (x16) and a 300W PSU. If you really wanted to, a GTX 980 should be fine (165W TDP) but no point unless you also upgrade the CPU
looks like a great deal for a 4 bay FreeNAS server. The Pentium 3220 also looks like it would run basic Plex/server apps ok

Just loaded W 10 on one with 120 GB SSD for a office workstation, runs sweet and silent, superb quality, 4 sata cables installed and 4 HDD power. only slight pain is the Slim ODD and the added memory is a bit pricer than regular DDR3 .ordered 3 more.

Cannot see why not from Dell. Nil from Quidco or TCB
I would be quite interested in using one of these as a workstation - would I be able to put a graphics card in it that would support 4k output? If so, any suggestions for some suitable low-cost ones?
Thanks,

the xeon version is on the cashback deal also, £110, its about £330 at the moment but im sure it was lower. I bought the linked T20 and its decent but the xeon version is far far superior. I use mines as a plex server and i can just about manage 2 videos transcoding at once, just. the xeon can breeze about 6 or 7.
normal PC yes, gaming PC not really - you'd need a low to mid-range graphics card to play anything on it (but nothing too power hungry) as it only has integrated graphics and a 290W PSU with no graphics card power connectors. To support a higher end card you'd also need a new power supply and probably a new CPU too - making it a poor base to start from really.

I meant what if I got the xeon and added a 970 or 980?

5 May 16#32
1. The PSU does not have 6/8-pin PCI-e connectors.
2. The PSU's 290W is very very tight for a high end graphics card.
3. Adding a different PSU is difficult, as Dell's motherboard connector is not a standard ATX one. You can find adaptors on ebay etc., though.
Overall: this is not an ideal platform for gaming. It may work well for light gaming, though, and a less power hungry card (Geforce 750?)
lilbeastie
5 May 16#33
what he said.
you'd also (really) need more memory and an SSD, so you'd really be paying your £220 for a limted airflow case, motherboard and processor. As this Dell will offer no overclocking and limited audio options you'd be better off spending a little more to build yourself from scratch with an i5 and better motherboard as the extra will be minimal over the cost of the Xeon system plus the high end GPU.

Oh don't you just love these deals- it's like being transported to another world where GPu and atx are linked seamlessly to motherboards and 950 psus and graphic cards and unbuffered Hynix dd thingumijigs- I must have missed out on so much when I was younger and was out of my house enjoying things xx
The HD P4600 onboard supports 4k already. Won't be much use for gaming etc, but it'll show you a desktop.
Can't really suggest anything else for you as you haven't said what you want to use the machine for.

That page is weird. If you only look at the graphs at the top it shows the pentium being a better performer than the Xeon. Yet if you look to the proper benchmarks section it shows, correctly, the Xeon beating the Pentium by a good margin.

6 May 16#42
what's the cheapest legit way to get windows onto this?
3guesses
6 May 16#43
OK, thanks, I didn't realise the onboard graphics supported 4k. I would be using the machine as a workstation, ie for more serious applications (not too CPU intensive) and not games, and I would just like a lot of screen real estate to work with so I can display plenty of windows simultaneously without the need for multiple monitors - I was hoping to use a fairly cheap ~32" 4k TV, but I guess I'll have to wait until I can find one that has a Display Port? Also, do you happen to know what the max frequency it is at which it will output 4k?
Thanks very much,

I've got the Xeon version of this running ESXi 6, it's pretty solid, you'll want to add more memory pretty quickly but otherwise it's fairly solid. Only problem I've been having is attaching an optical drive - USB Optical drives are a pain and the Xeon variant at least doesn't come with an internal one, though otherwise it's ready to roll out of the box. Just make a bootable image on a USB drive and away you go.

I took ages deciding between this or the Xeon but decided on this G3220 as I probably don't need the extra power, especially since I am currently using an old 2nd gen Acer Aspire Revo with an Intel Atom D525 1.80GHz since my last PC bit the dust. (v slow) Anything would be faster than that.
If I eventually need more grunt, the G3220 can be passed to the wife to replace her old & tired HP DC7100 (Pentium 4).
Thanks OP.

30Hz flickers on a CRT though due to the way the screens work, and it's that which causes eye strain.
LCDs don't flicker (there is no real refresh rate in the same sense as with a CRT - the screen just updates when there are pixel changes, the whole thing isn't really refreshed) so you can have a refresh rate as low as you like and you're eyes will be fine.
Lower refresh rates on an LCD just mean anything moving on the screen will look bad - so 30Hz is fine for a desktop but not for gaming. Assuming your screen will accept such a rate that is.
