In 1990 Nintendo had a virtual monopoly on the video game industry. Sega, on the other hand, was a faltering arcade company with big aspirations and even bigger personalities. But that would all change with the arrival of Tom Kalinske, a man who knew nothing about video games and everything about fighting uphill battles. His unconventional tactics, combined with the blood, sweat and bold ideas of his renegade employees, transformed Sega and eventually led to a ruthless David-and-Goliath showdown with rival Nintendo.
The battle was vicious, relentless and highly profitable, eventually sparking a global corporate war that would be fought on several fronts: from living rooms and schoolyards to boardrooms and Congress. It was a once-in-a-lifetime, no-holds-barred conflict that pitted brother against brother, kid against adult, Sonic against Mario, and the US against Japan.
Console Wars is the underdog tale of how Kalinske miraculously turned an industry punchline into a market leader. It's the story of how a humble family man, with an extraordinary imagination and a gift for turning problems into competitive advantages, inspired a team of underdogs to slay a giant and, as a result, birth a $60 billion dollar industry.

Do you know about The Company? They have loads of .exe emulated games. I downloaded Supercars 2 not so long ago and had a blast playing it. There's nothing quite as satisfying as buying a bunch of rockets at $100 each, then selling them all for $500 before the next level. Those between level questions too, where the answers are so ridiculously ambiguous that you get fined whatever you answer. Such a fun game.

3DO wasn't just from Panasonic, there was an Hitachi and Lucky Goldstar (LG) models, they were the 1st proper 3D capable console to hit the market so 1st to get proper 3D version of FIFA , the 1st ever Need for Speed and the greatest version of Road Rash! It's video playback abilities were also far better than the CD32 and even the PlayStation, it was far from lame, it was well ahead of its time rather than commodores lame attempt at making a console I'm afraid.

I certainly did, it broke after a few months though, the beginning to Microcosm was amazing, the game sucked but that didn't matter. The controller was lame but it was CD based games then Panasonic had the 3DO which was more lame than the Hound after he fell down the hill. Kids these days are all focussed on multi-player but the real genius back then was a game you played alone or with another person and would play for days! Super Cars and Super Cars 2 were classics.

Memorable games? I remember playing em but don't remember thinking wow this is amazing, Firefox for all its early 3D graphics was a bit of a dog to play on 16bit systems, even virtua racing on the MD had more playability n that's saying something...
Can clearly remember everyone stopping dead in their tracks at the sight of seeing FIFA playing on the Megadrive at ECTS on a massive screen, that was truly a step forward and also the SNES version played horrible next to the MD copy, Think FIFA was the 1st truly huge selling game in the UK too, I was importing from all over Europe to keep up with demand back then, luckily they were identical to the UK cartridges.
Have every single MD and SNES game released on my Shield and definitely play more MD than SNES on it, think only Super Ghouls n Ghosts and Castlevania get any real repeated play on SNES ROMs.

Turnover is vanity, profit is sanity - after the N64 being a commercial flop Nintendo were struggling financially, Gameboy sales or not.
As for memorable games, what you got after Mario, Donkey Kong and GoldenEye?
I'm also aware that commercially the original Xbox was a huge flop, it cost Microsoft billions but it put them in the number 1 slot for previous gen and no 2 in current whereas the Wii U is all but forgotten.
haritori
1 Jun 16#89
Obviously you have no idea how much revenue the Gameboy made for them, and then with the Nintendo DS.. Handheld is their bread and butter..
What you forget as well though is the SNES, N64, Gamecube, Wii and Wii U all have the most memorable games that are only available on a Nintendo format. Nintendo are a strange business, sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't.

Did you get a CD32? The intros (e.g. Alien Breen Tower Assault) were incredible at the time. Also Microcosm - although the gameplay was rubbish it looked so good! (like that movie Innerspace). I used to spend hours playing Liberation, Roadkill, Skidmarks, Cannon Fodder and Alien Breed 3D (on the A1200).

Yes! Except it was really good. You could play the levels in order (like a campaign mode) or choose them to practice. The best bits were walking down corridors, shooting the cyberpunks, avoiding the civvies. Its horrendous by today's standards, but at the time was very original and novel, and a massive step above the usual movie tie-ins (eg Terminator 2 which was an abomination). The bit you mentioned with the ninja robot, you could just pull your pistol and shoot it rather than fighting.

SNES v Megadrive was a beast. I had the NES then the Megadrive. Then hopped on over the PlayStation as everyone was lapping up the dreamcast and n64 (which I eventually got in the end through sheer curiosity. Set the standard for multiplayer gaming, though. Nintendo though, have, and always will, be the kings of the handheld. Sega and sony have both tried and failed to stack up against the game boy the consoles never kept Nintendo afloat as someone up there said, it was just trying to thicken a revenue stream, while the game boy is turning profit hand over fist they can afford to put a bit into r&d and if they fail then it doesn't really matter too much.

I remember fighting a ninja (poorly), doing some fps shooting and I think there was some driving.
The game was really bad.
If you want to go it like that then why do people compare Samsung (1938), Apple (1976) and Microsoft (1975) to one another till this day? Each company was created in different years.
You are such a moron.
Now Sonic competes against Mario in the Olympics.
It would do you good to read about a time before watching Pewdiepie or Nerd3 play games for you, and when the yearly console release schedule consisted of about 12 games, and if you were lucky enough to get a hold of one, you would play it until your fingers bled, you learned the level back to front and there was no such thing as throwing it on the pile, no one could afford a pile! well that was unless you had a Spectrum or C64, you go go to your local market (google it) and find the guy who sold Vinyl LP's (Google it) and he woudl prob have a collection of manic miners and horace goes skiing or dizzy for about £2.50-£3.50 each, of course you would have to wait 10 minutes while the game loaded from a cassette tape (google it) only for it to fail and then have to start again..
if you had even less money you could buy a magazine from the cornershop with a tape full of rubbish indie games and maybe one gem, or even better code your own game in the back pages, woudl take you about 3 hours to do it, and then another hour to realise where you went wrong.. but the joy of coding your own pong
nah if your under 30 you dont know you have been born with todays gaming.
Psygnosis were usually just a mediocre title with a flashy intro that took up the 1st disc and the game contained some pretty parallax scrolling and nothing else.
Now if you were talking Bitmap Brothers then you'd have been talking sense!
