If on the roads, definitely look at a hybrid bike. Now is a good time to start looking out for deals as the 2016 models start to attract discounts from their initial prices.
I recommend keeping an eye on places like Halfords, Evans Cycles if only for the ability to goi in store and try the bike out.

Don't get too tied up in it all though, something like this offers a more than decent starting point and is heavily discounted already. It's worth noting that it doesn't have mudgaurds or rack if that was something you might like.
http://www.halfords.com/cycling/bikes/hybrid-bikes/carrera-crossfire-2-mens-hybrid-bike-2015

There are means of getting it cheaper as well, British Cycling membership = 10% (after £16-20 outlay or borrow a friends) or you can purchase vouchers which offer 10% off, or use both! Or wait for Halfords flash sales(10%) - sign up to their emails. And you can use all three if you're cunning about it :man: eg: 10% flash sale - click and collect it! Then buy vouchers at 10% off, then wave your British Cycling at the till when you collect. Take into account that last discount when buying the vouchers.... tadaaaaa - nearly 30% off

That's very heavy duty use for a £200 bike. For a more typical leisure user I'd expect it to be fine.

This is probably a bit nearer what you want/need but you would probably be better off without the unnecessary and heavy suspension and fat tyres; so actually neither of them is right. Keep a look out for a decent hybrid - a more road orientated one for your purposes. Getting the wrong bike (even a well made one) won't encourage you to enjoy cycling. It's one of the few forms of exercise I enjoy (on a nice day). Good luck.
PS If you are mechanically competent £200 will get you a very good used hybrid via ebay or similar: look for brands like Specialized, TREK, etc. Giant are excellent value too.

Just to let anyone know who is still on the lookout for one of these.
The women's version is back down to £225 this weekend, less any British cycling club or work gift voucher discounts. With these there is still the possibility of getting it for under the magic £200.

You can change/upgrade bits later if you want to improve on it later, so if it's mostly what you want, then go for it. I'm getting a Crossfire 2 on Monday, using a friends staff discount

I hope that they have updated the forks on this bike, otherwise beware! I purchased one of these from Halfords when on Sale in around 2000 and the front forks are useless because they cannot be adjusted ie stiffened. I cannot stand up and use my body weight to work the peddles due to the bike bouncing around. It does say Carrera Vengeance 2015 so therefore it could of been updated in around 15 years. The disk brakes are quite effective.

It's difficult to see whether it has front fork adjustment in the picture even when magnified. It looks like it might but I suggest making sure before purchasing. For road use you need stiff front forks or no suspension which is preferable IMO. Therewise it's quite a nice bike. I paid around what this is going for now back when I purchased. With better front forks it would be great.

You're lucky too. I asked what the discount would be and they said nothing. It was only out a week they said. They really do seem to be a bunch of clowns. As I said, I wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt. Their customer service dept is equally as bad by the way. Cherry picking from my complaint and ignoring the points that they have no answer for.

16 May 16 1 #178
I'm not surprised. I've emailed customer service to complain. it's basically trying to swindle you so you buy the shop soiled one. The model is still being sold in my local shop at 299. I said to the customer service guy that if i walked in with 300 quid then i bet they'd find one in stock.
In the end I ordered a Btwin Rockrider from Decathlon. It's an extra £50 but the reviews are good for both the shop and the bike, and my order won't be dealt with by a toddler. I suggest you complain to Halfords, then go elsewhere.

Ordered last week and collected my voodoo bizango yesterday. What a piece of kit! Was on offer at £529, used the 10 percent code for the bike plus bought vouchers with another 10 percent off, finally joined british cycling for a further 10 percent! Absolute bargain, around £380 for a bike that generally Sells for £600 and is generally regarded as best mountain bike under £750. Thanks op

I picked mine (crossfire 2) up today and they were still £214 in the shop. I am very pleased with it, installed my shopping basket on the back, had a kickstand fitted and took out the £40 - 3 year after care plan, all for £247. Took it home on the train.

I'm in my forties and like you just about to get back into cycling for leisure only. I'm just under 6ft and went in to test the sizes. The guy originally thought I should be on a 21" frame but I struggled with that. Happy with the 19" frame. I ordered the crossfire 2 as it has a more comfortable seat and handlebars. Also it's a less aggressive seating position than a mountain bike so more enjoyable ride for work and back. I'm hoping to use it for work no more that 4 miles there and back from home.

A mate of mine bought the Subway limited edition a few years ago, it's a good bike but his has no suspension which is fine. I think the Crossfire 2 is just that little bit better as a bike. The Vengeance is an excellent MTB but the two Halfords guys I spoke to said for my needs the hybrid is better and I agree.

I hope that helps
a_user
12 May 16 #171
Help! Vengeance, Crossfire, Subway... I'm 6'1 so a 21" frame seems about right, but I'm not sure which of these would be a good for an early forties novice looking to get out with the kids, and maybe a bit fitter at the same time. It's totally for leisure, though I may use it for the 2 mile journey to work occasionally.

Does anyone have any recommendations of one over the other, though the Subway models seem to be a bit more costly. Budget is £250. I thought I had narrowed it down to the Carrera Parva 20" or the Crossfire 1 2015 21", but now I'm not so sure.

I think you made the right choice with the Crossfire. A hybrid is going to ride much nicer on cycle paths. Spec wise there was nothing between the two models.

12 May 16 #166
I couldn't decide between this and the Crossfire 2 Hybrid but ended up going for the Crossfire 2 and ordered last night with the discount code. Also realised I had £40 vouchers so getting the bike for £153.49!

Halfords phoned this morning saying that it's just the display model left which is not ideal but they said they will give a further 5% off.

Hope I don't regret not going for the Vengenace but most of my riding will be cycle paths/light trails and the reviews for the Hybrid seem decent enough.

Keefly, I think the pedal adaptors may be toe clips, they are mentioned on our checklists, I am going back to the store in a bit to ask for the manuals so I'll check.

The bundle with mudguards is what I ordered, the headline price is still £223 but when you select a frame size it shows as £311.

By all accounts its pot luck. Some excellent stores/mechanics and some awful ones. This would be like anywhere else and ok except for the fact that they're dealing in vehicles where one serious error can get someone killed.
It's just lucky they don't get the 16 year olds to do the car stuff I guess.
I'd like to see shops do the simple task they are supposed to do, invest in decent staff and make service the priority. In the same way that Lidl are dominating over Tesco, I'm sure we'll see someone more competent take Halfords monopoly away from them if they don't pull their finger out. Possibly Decathlon, which looks like where I'll be trying next.

Picked mine up from Cheltenham Halfords today, staff polite & thorough, bike looks correctly set up & I'm delighted with it, looks far better than the photos too (the mudguard set is excellent). Weird, for me I couldn't fault them at all.

Numerous phone calls to keep me up to date with the status of the build, a call two days later to check everything was OK.

Spoke to someone on live chat who said to return to store for a refund of the difference, I went to a different store and refunded without any questions.

I really wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt, but the guy i dealt with seemed determined to put me off.
I'd never be a badge snob, but Halfords for me certainly lived up to the bad name they get on bike forums etc.
Also, I went to an independant bike shop earlier today and the owner said he gets no end of trade via Halfords bikes being set up badly. I'm sure not all Halfords staff are inept, but road safety isn't something I'm prepared to gamble with. Together with the bad customer service, its a no go for me.

Their customer service is repulsive. I ordered one of the discounted Carrera bikes last Thursday, with estimated build and delivery on Tuesday. I got a call on Wednesday morning by a guy asking me if I want the bike. I said "yes, I will be over by afternoon".

He replied, that they discovered a factory fault at the frame and that he would have to look for another in another store, and even though I specifically asked to be updated on the status he never came back at me.

Today after attempting to phone them several times I was told that the order was cancelled on customer's request and there is no more stock available.

I had heard rumours about their service but this is ridiculous.

It's less about the money and more about the attitude. I didnt go into it as its a waste of time, but the attitude was lacking. Disinterested minimum wage guy basically. I was a union rep until recently so it grinds my gears that sort of thing. No pun intended.
I can get an affordable good quality bike with a bit of savvy. Halfords had their chance to have my money, now that opportunity goes to someone else.
Probably a bit idealistic, but there you go.

I don't think any of us actually believed the £430 price. I think they are now quoting £299 because the rules say it has to have been available at the stated price for 28 days within the past 6 months or similar.

But for the prices many of us have actually paid, in my case £178 it most certainly is a bargain.
I hope mine are available later today as promised as there is no local stock left now.

I don't see what was so bad about the customer service?

They were under no obligation to even offer you the display one, and if it's not a discontinued item then there's two issues for them if you take the display one.

A) No bike on display, no facilities to take orders against it - potential lost sales.

B) Someone has to build another for display when it comes back in!

I have no idea what the Halfords policies around this are, but having worked for a large electrical retailer for around 5 years until 2009, that's the policy we always adopted.
jamesvolunteer
10 May 16 #136
your reply to my comment doesnt show up on my app, but does on the website for some reason?!
Anyway, my answer is that from my point of view, its a shame that more people don't vote with their feet after receiving a poor service. Then firms would have to employ, train and pay better. Settling for a second rate experience just to get a bargain is whats bringing the country down in my opinion.
So yes, one bad experience is enough for me to not bother using Halfords again, or any other shop. It's not being precious at all. I don't want cheap prices to be at the expense of customer service.
jamesvolunteer
10 May 16 #132
I just ordered this after much deliberation and warnings not to buy from them, and got a call from what sounded like a 14 year old from Halfords saying they only had the display model left.

I asked how much discount i would get if i had the display one.

"None. the bike is half price as it is and it's only been on display about a week". The guy wouldn't budge. No I'll ask the manager, or suggestions of alternatives.

How many obnoxious children can hang off a set of handlebars in a week? Even Halfords fans admit the RRPs are well inflated.

That right there has guaranteed I will never buy a thing from Halfords in the future.

I've voted hot for the deal, and the bike looks good, but I shop on principal as well as price.
robertoegg to jamesvolunteer
10 May 16 1 #135
Don't get too precious about it, look at my links further up for evidence of decent reviews at full RRP. Therefore, this is a substantial saving and excellent value for money. Also, if you were to spend a little more you would get access to the class leading VooDoo Bizango. A bike that consistently tops the competition by some distance. It was £599 and competing with offerings up to £1000. It is now £529 making it the bargain of the century.

To deliberately withdraw these sorts of bikes from your shopping choices based upon one bloke who wouldn't offer you a discount is a little short-sighted. imo.

Become a member, have a look on their website. There's a fee associated so only do it if it's worth it.... If you pay for a certain level (one up from the basic) you do get insurance and legal advice which you might be interested in. I've got that cos I commute. So when people complain at me, I can politely correct them that I am insured

I used the 10% British Cycling discount together with the Vouchers (10% off) paying just over £150 for each!

Picked up the bike earlier today and I'm really pleased with it. I previously had a giant hybrid and I while you can't compare directly, the carrera feels really well built for the price paid. Gears all change smoothly, brakes decent, tyres grip brilliantly. It's heavier than my hybrid but that's to be expected and the seat hurts but all in all a great bike so far. Very happy.

Yep, looks like its offline for now. Don't panic, in my experience, Halfords tend to run back to back offers and something similar will come along in a week or so  (e.g. the frequent £20 off of a £200 spend will get it for roughly the same price).

7 May 16 #99
Thanks for that, got a little lost in the detail but I'll do some googling  Yeah, my main problem is that all of my routes are around 6miles away so I have to do a 1:3 split of road to off-road work. According to Strava I'm averaging around 16mph on the roads and even on the off-road bits, I rarely go off of the largest front ring (I'd like to think that's due to my immensely strong legs but in fairness, its probably just not too taxing terrain I guess ). I'm just concerned that as I'm on the highest gear on my Kraken, this would just make me knackered whilst getting nowhere, perhaps I just need to go and see if they will let me try one?

Thanks for your advice

Yeah the front chainrings at 22t & 36t will limit your top speed, but they will definitely give you some granny gears for local hills, rear cassette is 11t-36t so top gear is 3.27 (36tfront ring divided by smallest cog on cassette of 11t)
Factor in bigger wheels 29er and the gear inch will be a little higher over old style mtb 26" wheels

That said, how fast do you want to go, on that gearing you should easily be able to push 25km on a flat, which is a good speed for cycling and soon tire you out ..
Down long stretches you may spin out.

Any Hardtail or full-suspension bike is a bit of a slow ride on road/pavement due to weight and unsuitable tires and then of course a suspension which if there is no lockout can be annoying, Sure tires can be changed to slicks and on certain bikes you can lock the fork for a smoother ride but it'll always be much harder work keeping up with a bike that's up-to 5kg lighter that rolls on road better, For anyone that's looking for a bike to ride to work or to the shops etc than they should really be looking at a hybrid anyway.

I think people get caught up in how "cool" bikes with suspensions can look rather than buying something that is more suitable to what it'll be used for.

Hence why there is always so many good bikes that are hardly used for sale on ebay because people don't enjoy the ride.

Voodoo Marasa hybrid is perfect at £315 with coupon for anyone who is looking for a smooth and comfortable ride to work etc it's actually a superb bike for the price, Voodoo bikes have nailed it with there 2015 range.

I've really waffled on and strayed off topic a bit haven't I lol.... The bizango will be fast enough on road/pavement with lock on and some slicks, personally if you're not looking for offroad at all consider the Marasa go and take a look at it, It looks awesome aswell as being crazy value for money.

I'm concerned about the high (or is it low?!?) gearing on Bizango's front mech, great for off-road, but surely a speed killer on any road work??

This is probably a bit nearer what you want/need but you would probably be better off without the unnecessary and heavy suspension and fat tyres; so actually neither of them is right. Keep a look out for a decent hybrid - a more road orientated one for your purposes. Getting the wrong bike (even a well made one) won't encourage you to enjoy cycling. It's one of the few forms of exercise I enjoy (on a nice day). Good luck.
PS If you are mechanically competent £200 will get you a very good used hybrid via ebay or similar: look for brands like Specialized, TREK, etc. Giant are excellent value too.

does anyone know?
frakison to andreasuk
6 May 16 2 #83
If you are only 6 feet, you may be better with a skateboard as you need legs and arms to use one of these

Seriously, your height does not always dictate the size required, you may have a long body and short legs or vice-versa, you also need to consider inside leg and reach etc. Best bet is to pop into a store and try each size, we went in earlier today to look at this (looks good BTW), and although the 18" seemed to offer better leg position for my OH, the reach was uncomfortable, probably going to go with the 16", so saved a lot of hassle in the long run

I've got to say, my best mate had a Vengeance. He used it a lot. Including a 24hr race and 5 days touring around Wales's MTB trails. The bike was terrible. Problems would always encounter, then the bike sent back to Halfords for a fee. At the End of Wales his forks seized up. Brakes were terrible.

Decent light hybrid if you're tall enough for an xl size. I've got in medium and it's a belter. Also if you have a work discount scheme like nhs discounts, mylifestylerewards or similar you can usually get about 8-10pc off at Evans. And at halfords too.

If you are cycling on roads then I would tend to always say get a road/hybrid bike. I used my dads old Raleigh M-Trax for 11 years before getting my first road bike. MTB are perfectly find to use on the road but they do tend to weigh more.
robertoegg to naski666
5 May 16 15 #15
If on the roads, definitely look at a hybrid bike.

The suspension also locks on the Vulcan which is a godsend when climbing. I bought the Vulcan last week in the bank holiday sale for £299, cheaper than the current price and discount code.

I'll only be using it on road and light trails so I need to change the current bobbly tyres to near-slicks.

Seems an excellent price - could someone more knowledgeable let me know if this is better than the Carrera Vulcan? I know this one is priced better in the sale, just curious as to whether this is the better bike leaving aside the price, because the Vulcan will eventually be for sale at half price (probably) and that's the one I've been looking at. Thanks
James2505 to Holdsworth
5 May 16 3 #13
In theory the Vulcan is slightly higher spec and a step up from the Vengeance, e.g. it has hydraulic disk brakes instead of cable ones and the suspension has more travel. This is reflected in the normal prices outside of the sales. Still, it looks like the Vengeance has its own plus points, e.g. slightly lighter and available in a 22" frame.
