I drove past a small park at the edge of a housing estate last week, it was glorious sunshine and there were kids playing and I thought, that is awesome, the scourge of our modern technology where everyone is looking down at a smartphone posting inane pointless drivel to each other on inane pointless social media platforms, and there's some kids just enjoying the simplicity of being alive, at this point I didn't stop and drop kick my smartphone over one of the houses, I just kept on driving. I actually preferred the times before smartphones and tablets, those days were precious.

Having penalty shoot outs with this ball and saving it with your face. Good times!

The fly-away. The only ball you needed no skill at all to hit a free kick like Roberto Carlos. Goalkeepers were always scared when facing a shot from these balls.

We used to get these from Woolworths in the 1970's. I think we had one on the beach at Bridlington whilst holidaying in my auntie's caravan. It can be rather bracing on Brid beach. I kicked it into the wind and never saw it again. Probably came down in Hull.

This ball was so much fun, had so many laughs with friends...miss the days when it was a few of us kicking the ball around...then random others ask to play...then it's 5 a side...then more people ask if they can play too...and so on and on...until you got the whole neighborhood playing 20 a side in all different coloured tops...and you still knew who was on your team...!

Ahhh, me and my mates used to push each other into stinging nettles then frantically look around for a dock leaf, make catapults out of knicker elastic and use crab apples for ammo, fashion Chinese arrows tipped with a dart head, smoke those beige coloured reed things stuffed with dried grass we could snap off from the hedgerow and rob railway detonators so we could set them off outside school.

surely, taking inflation into account, these are an absolute bargain as £1 is now worth... etc.etc.

I fondly remember the days of playing in the street with Flyaways, those rock hard stolen school balls with the name of the school written on them in permanent marker, on very rare occasions with good casey's but usually knackered casey's with no leather/pvc left on them, just the bladder basically. Or playing curby with my spalding basketball that came free with some trainers, good times :smiley:

We called them Frido (we pronounced it Fido). Had a characterisitc smell and went 'boing' when kicked.

I remember catching a toe punt from a mate on the inside of my thigh on a freezing winters day, and watching the mirror image of 'Frido' develop in white inside the circular red mark left by the ball.

Was known as a "fly away" when I was a kid in Scotland.

Used to call them Garage Balls as you'd only be able to get one from the local petrol station

I had been the office all day on the PC a few weeks back and on driving home seen a few kids playing in the field like I used to as a kid, a keeper and the others taking in turns to have a shot at goal. I drove past smiling, bringing back the memories of when I was a kid, then turned the car around and drove back, rolled up the trousers, slipped on the trainer's and joined in having a kick about. I was there a good hour really enjoyed, just don't see enough of it these days. Too much tech these days is no good for anyone, it's gone to far and the balance is not right, will be interesting to see what happens to this generation 30-40 years down the road.

You couldn't beat a good ole game of "kick the can" back in the day. It was like a team hide-n-seek/tig with the kicking of the can the start of the game. Anyone do that, or was that just a Scottish kids game?

After the ball was punctured by being booted into a rose bush or hedge, we'd valiantly try carrying on playing, but it was like kicking a pillow. Invariably some kid would then squeeze all the air out (or enough air) to make a concave shape so they could wear it like a hat or helmet.

Ahh yeah there was that too. That used to annoy the hell out of me, you could still get half a game out of the ball until someone handball and had enough of the game, usually because they were loosing.

I just remembered after that it was usually do something like collect conkers, stand on a wall, play the game where you run into your mate and send them flying, throw stuff about, kick stuff, go or do something against the school rules, or generally cause havoc.
