bought this for £24 from ebay with tracking last week, not touching gearbeast after screwed couple of orders and offered peanuts. If noob, stick SPMC or other flavour of kodi with many easy good addons. Got this for bedroom replacement, good bits:

# 2GB RAM, usually 1GB for this price range, you do not want to go back to 1GB like it was 2014
# 16GB internal flash storage, usually 8GB for this price
# Good(ish) name and build compared to 90+% of boxes, not hundreds of clones and skimmed clones of clones.
# Good cpu for the price
# Most boxes are basically dead OS wise and since there hundreds coming out now, custom ROM devs have basically stopped doing most boxes, what they do they often abandon as another box comes out next month. This is one of the few makers out of hundreds who does OTA (Over The Air: wifi or ethernet) OS updates. I believe for this box they already done 4. They also started a website and forum.

Once I get mine, might start an owners thread with links to resources for others. If someone starts an owners thread, I'll post there.

The next kodi is out as beta nightlies with new great interface.

The next generation of CPU from Amlogic is out due this summer but will be pricey in a few boxes till later with more, probably drop by January 2017 with some boxes to a good level. It is the S912 chip and it is totally reworking the architecture. It will be outstanding and cheap(ish), might get a S912 box in Jan 2017 for about for about £70 range, nearer a £90-100 probably this autumn at launch for the few launch boxes.

You get the tracking number from eBay listing, in myebay summary too, check and track on http://www.aftership.com . Takes a few days for it to appear, gives you a few possible couriers, once you know which after a few days, can bookmark it.

If by Chinapost and most other Chinese couriers, once in UK, can track on royal mail track_details page.

I control my own Addons but for New people as well as experiences kodi users I recommend installing the wookie flavour of spmc DBO187 linked on this page. You can watch easily lots of stuff.

Chromecast to be ditched? No, different beast, has it's own uses, fast YouTube etc. As does chromecast audio. Might want to get a remote controlled hdmi switcher box for tv, about a fiver on eBay, to switch inputs to the tv fast.

Remote control: For setting up android, Kodi etc I use a wireless flat pc mouse, couple of quid from eBay, get the fatter bulgy older flat mouse, tis good quality.

I've been using the vertical skin on Kodi for nearly 4 years. Was abandoned for a while and persuaded the dev to resume. with vertical can use basic minimal remotes such as the one shipped with this box, not mouse or airmouse or controller. And it's much much faster and easier to control Kodi with vertical skins. And now everyone realized what I been saying for four years, next Kodi skin by default is vertical. No more trying to hunt down the hotspot on the silly horizontal control strip, and then trying to drag it left or right. Unbelievable crap that lasted for years. I rarely use my expensive remote airmouse / keyboard

Game controller? Could go for a Tronsmart go1 controller on Amazon for about £12. Functions as mouse/airmouse too. T3 game controller is basically the same for about £6-9 on eBay.com (not .uk). Got a T3 there last week for £4 but sold out fast.

This box is New from a good(ish) New maker which do a range actually. This is the cheaper small cute model in their line up. Reviews and feedback has been good so far as opposed to most other hundreds of budget boxes, except a handful of more pricey quality names. It does not have a switch button or light. You can buy a remote controlled power plug on eBay for a few quid which can be used for other things too.

EBay seller others listed here seems to have stock left. These were £32+ till last Thursday, then a couple of big tv box sellers dropped the price to £24 but sold out fast, now one has stock again but running out again. If it sells out, search eBay.com for it and sort by cheapest every few days. If you see a seller on eBay selling android tv boxes for silly prices, they are a scam. Usually less than 300 feedbacks, been selling dollar tat (as seen in feedback) and suddenly selling electronics for less than factory gate prices. You'll get your money back after a couple of months when they get banned, but waste of time. EBay Seller linked in this thread by others is legit.

Does anyone still have this unit that they don't use and no-longer want the remote? My kids have done the worst thing possible and lost the remote!!!

Two things here. You can power this via usb if you have the correct cable, so that would discount the PSU being broken (albeit the USB cable I have doesn't provide 2A as per the PSU, I run it no probs with no USB devices).

Secondly, if the remote is broken, you can soft boot the unit with a little-known reset button on the bottom of the unit. That said if you know you have power and it doesn't boot on power-up, that's not much use.

So, what Kelhaggagi said. And make sure your TV is on the right channel! **NB This unit DOES have an LED on it - just not very bright** When the unit is in operation there's a faint blue LED on the left hand side of the front panel.

Jasee, it could be either the box or the remote. As far as I know the remote that comes with it is the only way to turn it on. Replace the batteries and get close to the box. If you also plug in a USB stick into the box that has a light on it you will be able to see if the box is actually powering up and just not outputting. As they are quiet boxes that don't have lights on them it is hard to tell if they are powering up or not.

Anyone have experience of Bluetooth gamepads and Android boxes? Bought this Snakebyte-branded one from Amazon recently https://www.amazon.com/product-reviews/B01CY37SNC for my niece's Nexbox A95X though testing it out on my Beelnk MiniMXIII first.

I can navigate through the Apps tray but can't get it to work with (Android) games, tried two so far. There's a switch underneath for Cloud/Analog/Digital but no joy.

Edit: Tried one of the Goatz games on my phone (which my niece loves) and it works. There's a list here http://androidgamepadgames.com/

I've bought and installed this cable today which works off my Anker 6 port charger just fine.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/StarTech-com-Type-Barrel-Power-Cable/dp/B009C3CJG4 (2m, type M in case you get confused on that page)

The reviews state that the cable isn't really rated for the voltage that the box might draw, but I'm running a 1080p stream ok with no worries thus far. I wouldn't want to overstress it by plugging in anything hefty via usb but so far so good.

Now have two chromecast, portable nas drive, mxiii, charger all running off the anker behind the tv. One less plug required! (well, four actually!)

Just a FYI for those of you using Wookie (I am, at least).

There's September updates for all versions and I couldn't work out why I wasn't downloading the update. Turns out there is a new source link for Wookie.

from here - http://bestforkodi.com/install-kodi-16-1-install-wookie/ it says, "as of 14/9/16, there is a new source for the Wookie".

"...we need to enter the source that is http://wookiespmc.com/wiz This is a brand new source as of the 14/9/16".

Don't suppose anyone knows what exact size the DC barrel plug is on the adapter? I've just taken delivery of a Powerport 6 from Anker and want to get rid of the plug and use a DC/USB cable instead of another naff-looking socket-stealing adapter!

Not the point tho - if you can unlock the box simply by turning it on, there's nothing to stop you wiping it, or taking data off it with the debug tools via PC, or installing any new apps and simply signing in with Google and getting any data you want. Lack of pin entry to the device as a whole is a massive problem.
louiselouise
15 Sep 16 #225
Avast lets you do individual App Locking and you can set a PIN to unlock apps - not that I've tried it.

Never been into launchers much on Android, I leave it as-is. The Home Screen isn't going to win any style awards but I don't look at it for more than a few seconds :stuck_out_tongue:

Ah no, I mean security in general. There's no screen lock or anything! Cannot lock this device. Big flaw. Also the sleep/shutdown/reboot thing is a PITA. I wanted a one-click sleep.

Don't suppose you know what happens when you uninstall the home screen app completely? (I selected Nova App launcher instead of the default crapster app)

I think the Mini MX III II came out this month, seems it's still to be shipped out (in the next few days). Can't see any reviews for it on Youtube or anywhere else. I can see listings on Amazon.co.uk for this box now, but "currently unavailable".

I have Mozilla browser with ABP and Ghostery on my Mini MXIII, just like on my Desktop PC, and Avast Mobile Security - but not sure if I would need more? Also, you can get your hands on the "full version" Hotspot Shield Elite apk if you know where to look (in my case, for streams that require a US IP address).

Edit: Eeek! Apparently ABP comes with adverts now! http://www.theverge.com/2016/9/13/12890050/adblock-plus-now-sells-ads (I wondered why I was seeing "some" ads recently).

Just a FYI for those who didn't know, the Beelink Mini MXIII II is out now - S905X, dual band Wi-Fi and Android 6.0.

Compared to the Nexbox A95X it's not a competitive price at £33.36, but Beelink get good feedback re build quality (though not so sure about the firmware updates) http://www.gearbest.com/tv-box-mini-pc/pp_446536.html?wid=21

Many of the S905/S905X/2GB/16GB boxes have been around £30 for ages so worth considering over the Mini MXIII.

As others have said this box works well, yes it is technically outdated, but given the pace of these boxes, even the latest one will be outdated in six months. It all boils down to how much extra to get a newer or better system, but I definitely agree you want 2GB RAM and Android 5.1 to be the starting point. At under £25 that some of us paid, this is absolutely fantastic still. If you can get something with a newer chip, more RAM or Android 6 for not much more, do it, if you are talking double the price or more, I would probably say go for this still.
NikLP
18 Aug 16 #218
The s905 has been well received and supported so I'd imagine the s905x will be a good successor.

I'd avoid this one now but be careful to get a well supported unit, beelink have been "ok" so far. 2GB RAM (or even 3) is a must and there are units running Android 6 now I believe?

Otherwise, I've been very happy with mine, especially for the price - been very stable and very happy with it on the whole. Some crap software installed, the firmware/settings are a bit flaky, some missing functionality too (no security lock?!), some CEC is broken but it's all sufferable.
kelhaggagi
18 Aug 16 1 #217
It's a very good box but it depends what you want to use it for. It has an s905 processor but this has already been superseded by the s905x and s912 processor. If you want to use it for games then there are some games that won't work on this box (I think beach buggy) is one of them and trying to use Dolphin (Wii emulator) wont even start... so buying an S912 box will be a better option. However for everything else it seems great, as you can see from the previous post most people use it for Kodi which runs very well.

Overall I would highly recommend this box but as it is already outdated, I would spend a little more and get a newer box. I would recommend not buying any box with 1gb ram or running Android 4.

Hey louise, I'm somewhat loathe to give "advice" here, but my current course of action is installing the fusion repo and working off the tvaddons installers. There's a bit of argy-bargy going on around that team, but frankly if you ignore that and get that their main repo is pretty comprehensive, you can work with that almost exclusively and be pretty well sorted.

Does anyone know how to find out the latest Wookie updates? Most websites have a release log of some sort, listing different versions with dates beside them. You might not discuss it any more, but I am adding a comment. I tested the one I got this evening and it does not work on my Beelink either. Light flashes on the pad as if it is recognising input but the box does nothing. Trying on laptop and it took an age for the new device to be 'ready', and exactly the same on PC as on the Android box, no response to anything I do, even though the LED is flashing with every keypress and tap on the touchpad. As for the horizontal slots, in mine the slots are there but no terminals so it will not accept AAA batteries.
louiselouise
18 Jul 16 #201
Perhaps it is off-topic, I won't say any more on the subject (was simply trying to be helpful for those wanting to try another remote).

The device does work with the Beelink, as I said, it is only a slightly different font on the keys, and charging connection. Seems this new one is a dud.

Doesn't work on my PC either.

Another edit: When I take the rechargeable battery out (vertically) there are actually horizontal slots for 2 x AAA batteries. Didn't notice that till I had a good look at the battery compartment.

Charged the black/green version up (MiniUSB version) but it doesn't work. It's fully charged, and it lights up when I press the buttons, but nothing registers on the screen.

Tried changing the wireless dongle (as I have the black/blue version already that works), still nothing.

The seller says "in the battery compartment there is a usb connector that needs to be connected.
works via RF....plug the USB into the unit you want to operate and it should work."

Sigh, can't see anything inside the battery compartment.

This is a bit of an issue which I've tried to circumvent various ways with no success.

- Can't turn on the box via CEC using the tv remote (there's a connected media devices menu on my tv) because the device isn't "on" so doesn't appear.

- Tried configuring Kodi together with the android app to allow Wake-on-LAN, which doesn't seem to work either, but open to trying this again.

- There's no hardware button on the device to allow for rapid manual wake (tho NB there *is* a hardware reset button on the underside of the unit. I suggest this is probably exactly that - a power button, as per all common android devices, but for the sake of this conversation it's wildly impractical.

18 Jul 16 #193
No reason we couldn't get Android 6 running on these boxes really, just depends on there being adequate support, which is obviously the weak link here.

As for the longevity of this unit, I think the real "caveat emptor" is that you can't expect there to not be a new generation within even a couple of months. The best buy might be a superior/newer unit, but for 25-30 quid you can't go wrong, tho you should expect to replace within 18 months realistically?

I agree its a good box but don't buy it without considering s905x boxes as they are starting to come out. Although mini mxiii has a 64bit processor it does not have 64bit os and so emulators like 'dolphin' (wii emulator) won't work. Also s905x boxes will have Android 6 running on them

I have Alex's Openelec build working from a microSD, but it has problems playing HEVC files. SPMC running through Android works almost flawlessly, but due to limitations of Android, it will not passthrough DTS audio via HDMI or SPDIF without stuttering.

I want to buy a second remote control for this box because if I lost the controls it came with I can't even turn on the box. Does anyone know where I can buy a replacement remote control or know of a similar one that will work out of the box (mainly the power button)? Or does anyone hear have a different bee-link box and are able to test if that remote is compatible too.

On a different note, not sure if I read it here or on a different forum but for anyone who wants to use more than one Bluetooth gamepad (i.e. for emulators - I use 2 x T3 controllers) but having trouble getting them both to connect, simply change the first controllers names in the Bluetooth settings so that there wont be a name match.

Wookie and Beast 'progs/wizards' once installed and run, let many more video addons to be downloaded on request as they are big repos. Their UI is as a skin which as I said can be discarded for one's own skin. If you want a mega repo not packaged as prog/skin, install the superrepo for Jarvis which has 2,200 addons to download/install, most of which are video addons. Most other things often requested are also possible on Kodi, just finicky.

Best to uninstall Kodi that came with the box and install fresh from play store and regularly update from store. Do use trakt.tv, all the major addons will use it and it can save you losing favourites etc. Also can track progress/faves between platforms/devices, and also between addons on the same device I would assume. Basically use it! Check YT for some videos of how to get best use out of it.

This one is a bit dry but it gives a good overview of how to use the trakt website to get you up to speed with it, which will help you in your kodi endeavours in the long run. Basically, it "marks as read" a lot of stuff you're already watching/have watched so it will appear in addons in "my lists". https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y3d318fHdSE
You'll probably have to configure trakt for each addon though; although it's possible that the pre-installed-by-default trakt addon might track through each addon - haven't tried more than one. Have a web browser at the ready too for ease of setup/config (even with kodi).

Not convinced by any recommendations of builds.

The exception (that I probably won't eventually use anyway) is https://www.tvaddons.ag/ stuff - a lot of people point to their Addon Installer (Fusion). They have that Addon Installer - a decent start up package (install what you want from the repos provided) and also a "wizard" which is basically their build, based on what platform you're using (again from Fusion). See that URL above for details. You can learn a lot on that site too.

I would sack off the home screen and install Nova launcher tbh, the home screen thing is full of crap apps. Use Titanium backup app to remove spurious apps. Music, Media Center etc - they're useless. Just install Kodi from fresh. ES File Explorer should be your go-to file browser. VLC/MX Player will open/play anything else. Ditch any other app you don't know or trust I would say - this does render the default homescreen useless though. Hence Nova.

Genesis is dead. If you want to replace that, use Exodus.

A basic list of "must haves" can be found on any cursory search for "top kodi addons 2016" - usually starting with Addon Installer (which contains many of the less legal repos); Exodus, Phoenix, SALTS, sportsdevil seem to be the usual favourites. I've seen Exodus and it contains more than I can really use already. Live stuff seems to be more difficult; took me a long time to find a live stream for the Copa America final last night (seems like that should be pretty available?!)

Use 2016 in the search query and check the dates on articles. Anything still referring to XBMC should probably be eye with caution. There's a ton of stuff on a site by a guy called SEO-Michael, mostly installers and how-tos.

I am in the process of getting rid of the Wookie build because it's full of crap. It's still on my Beelink for the next day or so.

On my tablet thus far I have tried a few "naked" installs, and the AddOn Installer route, the TVaddons wizard thing - both via the (associated) Fusion installer/repo.

Tablet is currently on tvaddons android build. Haven't found a really good touchscreen skin though. Currently working my way through titan, retouched, amber and confluence.

For the beelink I would def like to have a better skin than confluence. It's very clear, but it's very awkward to navigate with the supplied remote, which I actually quite like. More convenient than the K400! Although the sony remote works with it too; it's just that there are some menu items you can't reach with the remote.

Def get rid of the default Kodi on the beelink tho, it's pointless trying to work with someone else's build, and we just don't know what's in it. Kodi is like a whole ecosystem in itself, so you need to resign to the fact that you need to spend a few hours fiddling to work out what's going on and then maybe a few more to get what you really want out of it.
louiselouise
27 Jun 16 #137
Most people using this Beelink have taken the pre-installed Kodi off and just added the "naked" Android app and started from scratch (as you say kelhaggagi, the original pre-installed Kodi has a lot of dead links/streams). Still learning my way around add-ons though.

Just an update to some.I am currently using a 1TB external drive with this too and having no issue with that. The only issues I am currently experiencing are

1) The 'Beach buggy' game won't work (I think a few people are reporting this)
2) Dolphin emulator wont work (just says 'not installed' when installing it - possibly only a 32bit version of android not 64bit)
3) Kodi setup is a mess and most streams won't work (however currently clearing it it and only istalling addons I want)
4) when using both a controller and a remote, the cursor on screen doesn't always respond
5) When the mini mxiii is connected to my tv ( and off) my tv (panasonic) is unable to controll my panasonic blu-ray player via hdmi-cec (it can only turn it on)

Apart from that it seems to work nicely. I have a t3 controller from amazon (£:sunglasses: which works well with Mame4droid and Alsphalt 8 (which is just awesome for a £30 box). Haven't really tried out other emulators but I do have another t3 controller on order (ebay £4 - mentioned previously) so I can test out 2 play games.

Yes with Kodi skins one needs a bit of experience, otherwise the settings can be daunting. They are not very logical, just legacy heritage.

Official Kodi (android win etc) does get lots of regular updates, so basically everyone amongst pros and devs etc just use them not custom builds anymore.

I commented about 128gb and even 256gb should be ok as I said before. As well as saying how this box I bought a week before this deal was posted, works well and no probs since then and how it compares to my other older 2gb/Xgb boxes which also work well. I also had a link to an app on Play Store which is GOOGLE (one of the biggest companies in the world!) and someone must have reported it as illegal even though by GOOGLE, as after some hours my post disappeared. With numerous downoads from that dev on Play Store, so Google knows well. So no point in linking more resources here if someone of that sort of mindset is getting legal links deleted, a clickhead who still visits this old thread to report and censor popular legal links to Google Play store apps! AFAIK basically no point doing more resources thanks to that person. Not worth the hassle. Best wishes.

I've tried out various android apps to play video files, and Kodi on Android has the best compatibility so far.

Others such as MX Player and VLC have trouble with some HEVC files.

A booting version of Kodi through OpenELEC will be the best for features ultimately, but that's still a work in progress.

Yeah am liking Kodi. Wish I'd discovered it when I had more free time! And put it on my phone/tablet years ago for out & about.

Not so sure about the Wookie build tho; there's a lot of crap in there, and the skins are pretty terrible. I went back to the standard Confluence one. I did try the Transparency one but I struggled with that.

You definitely need Exodus!!

I'd like to work out a setup such that I can standardise my config between machines - anyone seen anything like this? Maybe a folder sync tool or something? There's a bug in Kodi atm which means that skin settings aren't being saved which is a bit annoying, but when that's sorted I'll be a happy bunny.

I used to see regular updates every time I started Kodi - this appears to have stopped - am I missing something or did I maybe turn something off?

Did we ever get anywhere with the "owners club"?

Anyone looked about to see if anyone is working on alternative ROMs for this, maybe at XDA...?

If anyone isn't fussed about Android and would prefer to boot straight into Kodi, yet doesn't want to flash over Android, you can boot into Kodi from a micro-SD card.

Instructions:

1. Download this archive and extract the .img file it contains (use 7-Zip):

http://amlinux.ru/image/905/6.95.3.2/OpenELEC-Amlogic.aarch64-MiniMX-6.95.3.2.img.gz

2. Using an image writer app (e.g. for Windows: https://sourceforge.net/projects/win32diskimager/) write the image to the micro-SD card. Note that this will erase all existing data on the micro-SD card.

3. Insert micro-SD card into MiniMX and supply power.

4. Box should boot to OpenELEC. It will continue to boot to OpenELEC without any need to press restore button as long as the micro-SD card is inserted.

5. If it doesn't boot into OpenELEC, you may need to reboot whilst activating the reset button on the bottom of the media player (insert a bent paperclip into the small hole to press the switch).

6. If you find that you miss Android, to boot back into it, just remove the micro-SD card and reboot.

Most tablets/phones/android boxes/cameras specify 32gb or 64gb as maximum. Except very few cases, ones from last two years running a non-ancient OS versions of android can handle 128gb for most devices and many but not all can even handle 256gb sd cards. Most have been ignoring the upper limit blurb for years with no problem.

If there is a wireless mouse attached, can not assign another air mouse to the system as the interrupt request slot is already assigned.

T.v. Channels: If you install the right repositories to install the hundreds of video add-ons, or just wookie and run it, there are thousands of tv channels (Phoenix, filmon, not-filmon, satls, the mutts nuts, genesis, yify, etc) and thousands of movies & tv archives from the top movie add-ons installed as video add-ons in Kodi. Whole point of this box.

Yep. I installed loads of my repositories before installing wookie and changing skin back. It should be in standard wookie too. I think it is in superrepo too. There is a newer BBC iPlayer plugin called "iPlayer WWW" which I tried last week. It is actually better than the old bbc iplayer kodi addon. I would install both as bbc updates often break the addon, till the dev catches up. Then you have 2 one of which might be quicker to fix new bbc db link changes.

Nothing. You can sleep it, whatever, it doesn't bring up the screen lock (which is set to PIN).

So you can't lock the box at all. Which is not great. Any ideas people?

Same setup exactly if you click anything under the Physical keyboard heading as above.
Speech is moot (sic!) because no mic, unless I'm wrong there? Wouldn't be a bad thing really, GNow would be nice.

Hi NikLP, I'm trying to use a K360 wireless keyboard - how do I set it up? The M325 mouse worked straight away (both use a Logitech Unifying Dongle). The default keyboard keeps popping up - I know it's probably a simple fix but I'm stuck :stuck_out_tongue:

Most devs use total commander by ghisler, also installing his LAN plugin for tc lets android see all Windows/mac/Linux/network drives/Devices & do whatever with files to and from, follow instructions above. Tc is the best app ever.

The samba app I linked, lets all network computers see android box & it's sdcard and do whatever you want, if following simple instructions I stated.

All the whats re nova launcher, yes true with latest version for me.

Autorun: few with that name, I linked the best, works fine on this, boots into Kodi after I added it.

Best to uninstall & reinstall Kodi if having problems, to latest version from store.

Wookie is not an old style spmc build of xbmc, customized xbmc (Kodi). Follow instructions on prev pages. Installs as program, runs to install repository & add-ons and skins it accordingly. Can switch skins as i said, still keeps wookie add-ons, can switch back to whatever skin and keep the newly installed video add-ons.

Transparency is a skin, as explained above, few seconds to install from Kodi. Vertical skin.

Best way, play around after reading each app or Other instructions.

This would be good for PSX games as well, as I have a stack of ripped CDs (kosher!) on my NAS

I can fit a few on my tab/phone, but not much (thanks, google, for your SD card policy) so this would be nice, seeing as I'm dumping my X'360.

Anyone know about xbox controllers on this? Just need a MS wireless usb connector?
NikLP
9 Jun 16 #92
Autorun doesn't show as compatible in Play for me.

"Scrolling goes to dock toolbar too." - ...what?

"Mouse toggle is good too." - ... whaaat?

Is it best to uninstall the default Kodi (does this scrap all the plugins? I hope so) and get a separate build? Wookie is obvs recommended multiple times.

"Top Vertical menu transparency for fast kodi action" - triple wut?

I have sharing ok in ES, but the shares aren't visible in other apps. Is there a way around this? I've been trying to sort it for ages.

Also I have a private tracker for some business torrents (project files etc) but I can't figure out how to work any of the android torrent apps to use a secured tracker? It works fine "out of the box" on windows but nothing works in android, I've no idea what the difference is tho?

Obviously I'd want to use the shares (I have two NAS drives) as dumps for the torrent outputs, as well as media playback which is already working with NAS > ES FE > MX Player (altho I'm open to hearing how to config Kodi to be sensible as a browser for the NAS shares and/or use mx player for playback etc)

9 Jun 16 1 #90
Thanks elTuco, I actually want the share for a different reason. On my windows server I have loads of roms and I want Mame4Droid on my android box to see them all as a network share (not having to copy them locally). I will try tonight your file sharing when I am in front of the box. However it sounds like the android device is seen on windows, rather than windows seen on Android.

No owners thread afaik.

Btw instead if installing tens of repositories for numerous video add-ons, simply install Wookie as said on prev pages. Recommend retro skin look. Then in system settings switch to default Kodi skin or better yet transparency skin as said above. Then you have both interfaces and have access to hundreds of video add-ons as installed or easy to install: system, add-ons, video add-ons, get more.

Also setting up samba filesharing: setup easy user id & password: aa or 11 etc for both. Need to enable it, menu button, run once. In Windows: network window, appears as ANDROID. Login. Add the sdcard a separate drive too as explained above. Usually needs not running again nor logging in, but if necessary, run again & login once in a while. Copy your movies apks mp3s etc from Windows.

Best file manager ago is "Total Commander". Free, no ads, no pestering. In fact is the best android app, period. 2 pane listing for fast copying moving etc. Install his LAN plugin for total commander too, add computers by their ip numbers, can copy etc to other computers & drives from android. Click on files to run, click on folder/files icons to select then commands to copy like copy move delete are bottom icons. Search store for total commander & total commander LAN plugin. When adding computers, get their ip number with FING app. In too of total commander, click LAN plugin after installing plugin. Click + to add, enter ip number inky, leave other fields, give it a name, done. Computer or network drive now appears inside LAN plugin where you clicked +. Can also stream movies etc from network.

Best movie player as said is MX Player, preferably pro version.

Nova works superb with this. Scrolling goes to dock toolbar too. Mouse toggle is good too. But best to set up complex tasks with wireless mouse as I said before, the classic thin yet bulgy ones on ebsay.

This box is really flawless compared to other sub £50 boxes and is highly recommended. No glitches so far in the OS after a couple of weeks. Superb, sp for the price. In Kodi, upgrade to latest from Store or download. For skin, go to kodi skin settings, choose skin (to change), get more ...(skins), choose TRANSPARENCY skin and install. Top Vertical menu transparency for fast kodi action. Add Videos and faves to menu. Add video Addons to submenu to Movies or whatever. Changed all backgrounds to a small black square in skin settings.
--------------------------------------------------

If you want to see your box files on Windows network, install "Samba Filesharing", not on play store anymore but on xda still, first post. In settings if you enable SD-Card & click ok on radio button, you will see your box's sdcard on windows/mac network too, as a separate drive.

at bottom of first post to download:

Install app Autorun from store, add Kodi to it so starts kodi automatically after box boots.

Got my "T3 controller" today, came back for £4 delivered on ebay . com for a while, search and sort by cheapest. For Bluetooth controller games that do work on android (most do not):

https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=controller+android+games

tested a couple of games from the top 10 android controoler games video, work fine. Read manual how to connect, press X on T3 and then the big round red button, box should be in settings, bluetooth enabled, searching then connect to gamepad. This is for those who got or bought a gamepad controller.

Kodi is obviously a media centre jobby but I'm not super bothered about that. I was hoping it might be a little easier to configure but I knew there were hidden daemons within. Box seems to have arrived with quite a lot of crap in there tho.

I use MX Player religiously; however on a tab/phone it's very easy to use that with ES File Explorer. That, however, is impossible to navigate with the [supplied/any] remote. Fortunately, I have the K400 as mentioned earlier. But that's bulky.

Be interested to find something quite similar to the provided home screen but ... not that one. Can you even configure it? I removed the stock browser and can't make the link point to Chrome, unless I'm missing something. Haven't fiddled that much as yet.

Also I'm having an @rse of a time with CEC. If I turn on the box with the supplied remote, it turns on the TV and switches to the correct HDMI input - great! However, the sound seems to be broken. If I turn on the TV *then* turn on the box with the remote, the sound works ok. Not sure what even happens when I use the TV remote to turn off the TV - is it implied that it sends the box to sleep via CEC or is it just ticking away??

Also the TV remote doesn't control the media centre remote. And the supplied remote purports to be controlling the volume in MX, but while it displays as such on the screen, the volume doesn't change!

All rather odd. I suppose I expected it to be a bit more vanilla. Not complaining, just want to get it to be a bit more predictable I guess!
Torchwood
8 Jun 16 #82
Yeah, the stock launcher is fugly, that launcher will replace it. Nova will work, but might be difficult to navigate with the remote supplied. Even with a mouse Android doesn't feel right, so these special launchers do make a difference.

If you want to play videos, Kodi will work, but you could also try the Android apps MX Player or VLC to see which you prefer. Kodi, does add a little more loading time when you just want to watch something quickly.

Thankfully you can uninstall the fishing game!

First things that caused me issues: there's some Display settings which are new to me (as a non-box user) so if your display is skew-wiff, check in there. My display was going off the screen and auto mode was coming in at oversize 720p

Stuff:
There's CEC settings! Which is nice, so you can turn on the TV with the supplied remote. And actually my Sony remote controls a few of the box features as well over the same interface which is pretty amazing. I know this isn't new, but if this is your first box and you were expecting an android tablet with a mouse - it isn't.
WARNING? Chrome is not the default browser. I don't know what it is, but it's not latest Chrome. I didn't log in - it wants access to ALL your google data by default. I installed Chrome from Play and want to get rid of the supplied browser. I can't remember what the deal is with stock browsers now so I'm just noting this...

Security:
WARNING: Unknown sources is switched OFF by default! Could be because of Kodi install, but best be aware.
WARNING: verify apps is OFF by default!

Questions:
What's Remote?
How do I switch off the on screen keyboard?
NikLP

I already have a multitude of ways of playing media files (BR player, Chromecast, Raspberry Pi Zero with Kodi, TV itself via USB), but I like the idea of being able to play HEVC files and 4K when the time comes. I've also ordered a joypad as elTuco recommended, so maybe I'll play a few casual games too.

I like the idea of it being Android as it's more flexible than a straight Kodi box. Lots of simple games to choose from, and the ability to connect all my Google accounts.

I guess that with a keyboard, mouse and monitor, it would even make a very cheap PC for web browsing and word processing (there are some very capable Android office apps, e.g the Softmaker Office HD suite).

I haven't yet found an S905-based box that cannot play reasonable bitrate HEVC 10bit smoothly via v15+ of Kodi, unlike RK3288 & H3 based boxes. Not yet wholly convinced Kodi can portray the benefit of 10bit (might just convert to 8bit on the fly), but it certainly plays it. Also not convinced "99% of HEVC videos are encoded 10 bit" but irrelevant if a box can play the media.

24 May 16 5 #38
I control my own Addons but for New people as well as experiences kodi users I recommend installing the wookie flavour of spmc DBO187 linked on this page.

24 May 16 #37
I thought maybe that, but if that is the case you really do need to know their requirements first.

That remote looks barely more than a Roku remote, ample for just the main menu and Kodi, no good for non-media apps I wouldn't expect. Apparently Unified Remote are working on the ability to control one Android device with another, if they release that in an update soon then that could be a very good option for something like this.

I really doubt you can get even HD Netflix on this. Netflix have approved only a very small no of streaming devices e.g. Fire TV/stick, Roku, Chromecast) and tablets for serving up their HD streams on. Anything not pre-approved will get only SD:
http://www.digitaltrends.com/home-theater/why-android-and-other-devices-cant-stream-hd-netflix/#:VhDVKH0P6oKb7A

As for Ultra HD the list is even more rarefied - copied today from their website:
Nvidia Shield
Roku 4
TiVo Bolt
Amazon Fire TV (New Version)
British Telecom - BT DTRT-4000
Air 7410X (Waoo! in Denmark)
Sagem 4K (Totalplay in Mexico)
Dish Hopper 3
Orange Livebox Play 4
More devices coming soon!

So this box is more than capable of playing a 4K stream and may even have the right HDMI credentials etc, but Netflix simply won't care.

... some of which do have a built in bay. You pay a premium for it compared to the ones direct from China tho ....

are there any kodi boxes that will let you install a 2.5 internal hard drive, inside the box itself rather than a usb hd or stick for an over all media player experience

This or the Sumvision or MX4+

bought this for £24 from ebay with tracking last week, not touching gearbeast after screwed couple of orders and offered peanuts.

I have a non-Android Sony Smart TV (the model before the Android editions) so I kinda have one now - went for it.

I'm sure I'll unravel the mysteries of Kodi if I'm determined enough :stuck_out_tongue:

Excellent! Baby brother has been humming and hawing, can see him buying one now. I'm tempted myself but I've never figured out Kodi - put it on both my PC and Android phone but find myself constantly searching for streams.

Is there one which is 5ghz wifi?

What is the bottleneck of this one va a slightly higher model?

Lol. "Discount" code adds about £5 to the base price of £31 then deducts about £6. Still, it's better than other way round !
Shame it doesn't work on the UK plug option.

The code only works with the EU Plug option, but I'd assume you could maybe ask them to supply a UK plug at Checkout?
