Same price as the 8gb version going round at the moment at different retailers but this is the 16gb version.
A bargain at £39.99
Up to 128GB of expandable storage

Yeah, I decided not to buy a Suzuki Swift the other day because it didn't do 0-60mph in 5 seconds.

Not a bad price, but beware. I tried buying two different units from Argos a month ago and both contained more than a couple dead pixels each.

How do the fire tablets compare app wise to regular android? Is there much missing?
I'm looking to pick up a couple of half decent tablets for the kids, to improve what they have (cheap Chinese ones) but don't know if the apps they want will be there...?

You can install google play store on these tablets also with a bit of fiddling about to give you more app choice.

Hi. I would suggest going for an android tablet. Or you could root this one n install android os

25 May 161#10
No it doesnt. You have to do a quick press on top right button. Then the lock screen appears with an advert (unless you have a non advert tablet) , and you swipe up to enter.

25 May 16#11
Ah, cool, didn't know that...
Is it much of a faff? rooting and stuff or more straight forward? How is compatibility? I'd guess at near total?
Thanks OP, was looking at getting the 8GB model, but this is a bonus!
Anyone have any recommendations on a decent case? Was looking at this one

These devices often have dead pixels, I sent 2 back to Amazon because of it.

Watch out for them being sold with the recalled chargers, we got one last week from Amazon directly with the faulty one.
Amazon will give you a free one if you tell them.

Can anyone tell me what Android version runs on this Fire Tablet?
targaid to dannyhumphreys

Fire OS. It's based on Android but is heavily modified. In my opinion its awful and my 7 year-old felt insulted by the junior interface.

This device runs Amazon FireOS 5 "Bellini" which is a derivative of Android 5.1 (Lollipop).

Hence why this is a deal for the 16gb version...and has a mircoSD slot for expanding the storage. £39.99 for a device that has a screen, cpu/gpu, ram, memory, cameras & the overheads of a business/R&D ...we are living in a mad world!

Once I registered my Fire I used that link & went on the contact us section. Selected my new Fire tablet & clicked the chat icon. They added £17.99 credit to my account to buy the only charger you can buy from Amazon, the official fast charger. Used the credit to buy the kids case, as my son will be having this. So when you factor in the credit I have just bought a 16gb tablet for £22!!! Wowser.

After the initial charger recall, the replacement that was sent out was the Amazon PowerFast USB Charger.
Since then, a new Amazon 5W USB Power Adapter has appeared for sale which is "approved to work with all Kindle e-readers, Fire tablets, Fire phone".
I'm guessing this is the identical 'non-affected' replacement adapter which is now included in the box since the full product recall.

Weird, that item doesn't come up in the Accessory section. When I contacted them I assumed it would simply be a replacement sent out, was quite happy with the credit!

picked one up this afternoon-few tweeks and its now running near enough pure android 5.1.
came with fire os 5.3-had to downgrade to 5.2, root and install the custom rom.

Bought the 8gb version for £35 on Black Friday for my then 4 year old. There are less apps and, (unless I have missed something obvious) there did not appear to be a web browser, the search engine just takes you to Amazon sites so I installed a browser app which works fine. All said and done, it works really well for a child and was worth the price. At £39.99 for 16gb, I will consider buying one.

25 May 16#35
I bought one priced at 35 on Black Friday. I got £10 off for trying same day delivery, bringing it down to £25. They then gave me £13 to buy a replacement charger, so it only cost £12.
Great for that price.

I got one in the Black Friday sale and I can honestly say after I did the fiddle to remove ads and put google play store on (which was easy) this tablet totally blew me away for the price. Very happy with mine.
They are the same tablet. This model is the same one that has been gathering alot of heat over the past two days, but those models were all 8GB capacity. There's no other differences other than this deal being only available in blue.
Hope this helps.

I've got both. I much prefer the ASUS MeMO Pad.
The ASUS MeMO Pad has a built in accelerometer and GPS, better screen, much better battery life (lasts twice as long if you force stop Dmclient & Powersaver)
Amazon have completely knobbled android on the fire tablet. Even though I've installed Google play store, got rid of the annoying lock screen adverts and installed another launcher (Nova) it's still really restricted. Sure, you could faff about and install a custom ROM but then you risk bricking it, voiding the warranty and opening it up to security issues.
I bought the fire tablet for playing movies & TV show downloads when I'm on the road (parked up of course). It's very capable for that. However, I haven't switched it on for the last couple of months since I upgraded my phone to the Vodafone Smart Ultra 6 (£99).
I paid £35 for my fire tablet then had a£12 rebate for the faulty charger (which isn't faulty), so for £23 I'm laughing. But it's definitely no ASUS MeMO Pad.
Hope that helps.
Edit: just noticed that my Asus is the ME173X.

It wasn't actually one day it was Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday it was at £39.99. The store I bought mine from had 15 in stock on Monday but 0 left to order/reserve when I went in to pick up mine yesterday. The other 8 Argos stores within a 20 mile radius of me all had stock of the blue tablet at £39.99 at 7pm Monday evening when I reserved mine.
Also meant to say that a work colleague managed to order one on Wednesday morning at one of these stores at £39.99'and pick it up at lunchtime the same day.
