Given the substatial revenue shortfall the BBC is undergoing through, unjustified political intervention. Buying BBC content or merchandise ensures the broadcaster can maintain a decent service. People say it's a con it's fundamentally not. With the Cooperation now having to take on the OAP to licence subsidy by the government. Your anger and negativity is misplaced. The BBC have been railroaded creatively and fiscally but successive governments. Undermining its independence whilst those who seek to fragment it, use it as a bastion of Great British industry. It's not a Con, direct your anger at the government. Who continue with the triple lock for pensioners, removing the OAP to licence subsidy, could lower the licence fee. Quality programming does not come cheap, and deals like this represent good value.

Can't imagine it'll ever come out on DVD as it was just the three episodes, so worth a punt to see if the ability to watch your purchased programmes ever comes to the apps on my TV, NowTV box or TiVo!

BBC Store works with my Chromecast.

It doesn't work with the iPlayer app on my Samsung TV, TiVo or NowTV box (which is why I only bought one programme); don't know about Fire TV.

Agree I have invested in a chromecast and it won't stream to tv tried, my xbox one ps4 and Sony tv it seems it's only available on tablet and mobile phones at the moment, you can download on pc I'm waiting on a possible update to iplayer that incorporates streaming of bought purchases.

Not the case here tried it today works on my chromecast to the TV.

This is on BBC store, not iplayer, so you can own them forever (in theory) and watch them as many times as you like.

Just a heads-up that it's worth double-checking if the programme you're downloading is HD or not.

I bought a programme that I'd seen at Xmas in glorious HD, assuming the download was in HD too, but only found out afterwards that the download was offered in SD only.

This is like buying thru iTunes, except money goes straight to BBC and Apple doesn't take a slice.
& they can release everything (rights permitting), even stuff unviable to release as DVDs (eg single episodes of lost shows etc).
And BBC STORE should be around for ever. At least in our lifetimes.

How is everyone saying you cannot watch them with Chromecast? Is it only me who can cast these programmes to the TV?

It appears so, how are you doing it? are you just casting your phone screen so it plays on the tv and phone at the same time? if so you wont get a full resolution that way. I cant see the cast icon in the iplayer app.

A TV licence may be dependant on viewing live TV, but the BBC itself specifically distinguishes "content funded in whole or part" by the licence fee as subject to its charter etc.

Their "audience promise" specifically states; "3. Get hold of all recent BBC programmes and be treated to the best of the BBC’s library of programmes in trusted environments - with a ‘permanent collection’ available for free, and paying for other content which would otherwise not be available."

- If you want to watch live tv; you need a licence.
- The BBC is required to provide a seven day catch-up service.
- Recent and other "best" programs are available free and permanent. (older archives that are worth making available qualify as "best")

Obviously; movies or imported series will not be licence funded; so charging for these is expected. But all the examples I can see are those commissioned; so should not be charged for (unless the charge is for a commentary track or similar specifically produced separately from any broadcast item, and funded by non-BBC sources.

The government need to step in more and completely dump the licence. You say "Quality programming does not come cheap" - I say that the BBC has appalling quality programmes and it's disgusting they can justify billions on such dross, yet if I wanted to watch the other channels I would still have to pay for it.
You like it, fine you pay a subscription.

The BBC get around not being able to charge people by giving BBC Worldwide the rights to their past and present progams so they can then sell them to broadcasters around the world and sell dvd's and streaming content to us without breaching the charter. The BBC's revenue is 75% funded by licence fee and 25% via BBC Worldwide. I don't personally think they should be charging for archive content especially not recent programs such as doctors of which they currently offer 600 episodes at the cost of over £1200. Channel 4 offer a large selection of their archives for free (Ad Supported) and I don't see why the BBC can't do the same. The other thing I hate about the BBC Store is they say that they can't guarantee your purchase will be aviliable forever meaning they can remove a program at any time they like and then your purchase becomes useless.
