Unfortunately there IS actual evidence about poor quality chargers being a fire risk due to poor quality control and cost savings on components. I'm not qualified to open one of these up and check if it's safe - maybe you are - but I'll stick to brand names for things like this. These are about fake Apple chargers, but same applies.

I have one of these, it's very handy and lives plugged in next to my bed when I'm not traveling. If I was being picky, the blue light that says it's on it too strong for bedside use but that's easily fixed with a piece of insulating tape.

Just bought on of these for my motorhome, its great and this is a great price. Thanks OP The blue lights seem to be SOOO bright on everything these days, the worst one at the moment is the SKY Q light and you cant turn it off permanently, yet. I need shares in insulation tape.

got an 'energizer' branded one of these from b&m a while ago and it's been used and abused in my tour van and it's still going strong, seems to slow down the charging a bit when all the ports are in use but that's to be expected, otherwise great.

7 May 16 1 #13
Anyone seen something similar bit with less ports? I only need 2....

to be honest I would spend a tad more and get one of these

https://www.amazon.co.uk/EasyAcc%C2%AE-5-Port-Desktop-Charger-Travel/dp/B00L52361M/ref=sr_1_4?srs=1655449031&ie=UTF8&qid=1462619830&sr=8-4&keywords=charger+5+port

well established brand - %a output total rather than 4 and no bright blue light!

yes only 5 ports rather than 6 but if all 6 are used at once charging times will be much slower

This certainly looks a good deal until you look at the price history and see it's always this price and for the last 3 months has been £4. I know no time machine but not a good deal as this is the standard price :disappointed:

My only thoughts on this design is that the USB ports will be coming out the top if plugged into a wall socket, would 6 USB cables dangling back downwards plus the weight of the device possibly cause the device to lever itself out the wall socket I wonder?

I imagine that the rest of the world wont have this problem as with so many devices like this, the UK plug is actually the wrong way round due to our bulky 3 pin plug arrangement. Many powersupplies (Blackberry, Bose come to mind) suffer this problem, with cable entry coming out from top and fraying where the cable exits the supply and fails prematurely, those with 2 pins would find the cable exits from the bottom plus the logo isn't upside down!)

For the record, I'm no expert

I think or hope everyone knows there are many cheap and dangerous chargers out there, of that is no doubt whatsoever and plenty of evidence and tales of woe (and often some stupidity on the users part) Topps was saying that no doubt someone will say this particular product will get an expert saying it's a death trap based on nothing solid other than the fact it's a USB charger.

A $1 fake Apple charger and this charger may have little in common other than country of origin. I don't know, I've not inspected the innards.

Agreed, however this is probably going to work out at twice the price if you don't have amazons ridiculous and annoying prime and it come with a wire and a uk plug rather than connecting directly via supplied adapters directly to the sockets in many other countries

For all those who want to more information, I think the below review is of this charger:

http://lygte-info.dk/review/USBpower%206%20port%204A%20UK.html

I've posted this review before, this charger has been around for a long time and the amount of on board components tends to vary.

If you want my opinion I think this charger is safe but without the overload protection I would not be plugging expensive equipment into it. If you spend an extra fiver you can get this:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Charger-RAVPower-Charging-iSmart-Technology/dp/B00GX3BKKW/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1462650611&sr=8-3&keywords=usb+40w

Yes its 4 ports and not 6 but try charging 6 devices to full at 40w and it will take something like 16 hours.
MassiveGeek
7 May 16 2 #38
4A is not enough for modern devices. It will take near a full day to charge 6 modern devices simultaneously.
An HTC One M9 requires 2.1A to charge to full in 3.5hours
An iPad more.
Plug in multiples and you are effectively giving the device a third of the manufacturers recommended charge power and therefore killing the speed of the charge.
Plus, with no overload protection, god knows the cost of replacing the devices if something goes wrong.
Save yourself the heartache and buy an Anker.

Comments and info on the exact item in question is good and should be welcomed, often these sorts of deals get generic sweeping statements saying something is bad/dangerous without anything to back up the claim. That teardown is interesting, clearly the original design was ok and probably met regulatory requirements but in order to cut costs they've removed a load of components which isn't good.
mogsog
7 May 16 2 #42
Thank you sir, for all interested I have torn down one of these myself and it lacked the same components in the review / teardown, I don't have pictures of my own disassembly so you will have to take my statement at face value. The question of whether the is a version of this product out there with all the intended components still remains. Using this product for some time I have to say high frequencies are very audible especially when plugging in a load. We are talking a sound I can only describe as "the suffering squeal of a pixie being torchered". These sounds are more than likely caused by the zener diode and the lack of filtering and smoothing components on the board.
mogsog
7 May 16 1 #43
The review states it is a fairly safe device to use, the lack of overload protection is a worry for more expensive devices but it's not a fire hazard. If you compare the images from the review and the product page the markings on the side of the case are pretty much identical. I'll post the teardown images from my own tomorrow.

Good shout, I'm a fan of Clive, the KOPPLA has a 36w max load that's a nice 2.4A per port. The cost is £7 quid. So you're getting less ports but but all with 'full' power and significantly better charger.

8 May 16 1 #48
bigclivedotcom on YouTube does a lot of teardowns of power supplies like this. Most are tolerable if not abused, some are potential death-traps, and a few are exemplary. Of the latter, Ikea's KOPPLA looks to be easily obtainable and of consistent quality.

also a teardown of the Easyacc I mentioned in a post here earlier .... it's here but only in German - but conclusion is good - does not get so hot / overload protection works

I did a whole load of research on these chargers a couple of months back. At present, I am using one charger for most devices because it's a 2.1 amp charger which can charge a tablet or Nexus 5 within a couple of hours. I was looking for something similar, but for multiple devices. someone said to aim for 10w per port, which is about right. I finally purchased the following which has been rock solid.

USB Charger Anear 60W 6 Port USB Wall Charging Hub, High Speed with PowerSmart Technology Desktop Travel Charger Compatible with iPhone 6 / 6 Plus, iPad Air 2 / mini 3, Samsung Galaxy S6 / S6 Edge and More https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01COYR54S/ref=cm_sw_r_wa_apa_l3Wlxb4DZ33MQ

I wouldn't risk this product with expensive devices personally but it's a good price. Unless you need it super cheap, buy something like an Anker, Easyacc or Ravpower with a bit of brand support and proven reliability.
