Got he 40" one 5-6 weeks ago and while it's great, the sound isn't, seems to be coming from BEHIND the TV ! OK though, not a deal breaker.
BUT I had to take THREE back for different faults until I got one that worked.

Any TV where you have had 4 sets in 6 weeks can't be that great?

I think this is the model up to the one sold on Black Friday (Thursday was on sale!) sound quality it's terrible but put some speakers with it or a sound bar and you're sorted!

Why is ARC not 4k 60hz? but one hdmi has 4k 60hz? so will work with fire tv for netflix 4k?

26 May 16#6
ARC not 4k 60hz is annoying? i currently plug my devices into my hifi and then send that to tv. this way... will have to plug 4k device into tv and send sound out via optical to hifi? suppose not a massive problem!
jameshothothot
26 May 161#7
assuming optical will be 5.1?

what is hdmi CEC? why does this connect to the internet? i don't see any apps so far in the manual..
jameshothothot
26 May 16#10
ok i have been through the manual. I guess it doesn't run Netflix 4k or any other apps? prove me wrong? no idea if does 4k 60hz compatable with netflix on fire tv. Anyone with more knowledge of 4k tvs tell me why this isn't bargain of the year?!!
it allows your device to control the tv - e.g switch device on and the device then automatically switches tv on and selects the hdmi input. Also allows your tv remote to control the device - e.g I use kodi on my raspberry pi with the tv remote because of hdmi cec.

26 May 16#13
aha ok... so nothing to do with hdmi 2.0... so we don't know if this will play netflix 4k yet?

i didn't check for gaming as my dad just wants 4k and i want to ensure is netflix 4k. there is a manual (i am at work now) and you can look at response time. 5 ms i think is good for gaming. hard to know as unbranded one. was looking at hisense ones on amazon and richer sounds too
cigbunt
27 May 16#19
i'd go for a hisense rather than this...

ARC will work fine, you use 4K 60hz on HDMI 4 and the Audio will still return over HDMI 2...
But personally i wouldnt buy this TV, id spend a bit more on a decent Brand from John Lewis or Richer Sounds and get teh 5/6 year respective Warranty.

These TVs are fine for those that want the prestige of owning a large no-frills 4K TV.
Personally I'd go for a branded Full HD set

You don't often see "Contrast Ratio" quoted nowadays - is 5000:1 good or not?

If i remember rightly and that's not Dynamic then that should be a good ratio... sure someone will correct me if im wrong on that .

I like the double sided remote control with the keyboard on one side. Not seen that before. Stand/Legs seem even thinner than normal. Hard to know how good the tv is but the comment about having to return multiple sets to get a good one for the smaller size model is worrying I would say. These sets are pretty modular with normally a selection of parts from China assembled somewhere in Europe. Typically Vestel in Turkey or could be even mainstream brands in their EU factories. They only have to choose a poor psu board and a logic board with the least powerful chipset to make the set unreliable and poor to use. Panel quality obviously dictates the final image quality as does the rating of the sound amplifier and speakers used.
Also very important to make sure the 4k set you are buying supports a 4k 60hz frame rate. Some earlier or very cheap 4k sets lack this compatibility and this is important to the viewing quality of 4k material.
Also unknown brand supermarket sets don't have good support for firmware fixes. Sometimes issues go unfixed that a major brand would have fixes for. Panasonic do rebranding of basic chinese component sets as their entry level models but do offer full support with regard updated firmwares.
Remember televisions get a lot of use, most of us spend hours per day in front of them so its worth getting the buying decision right. Spending just a little more or waiting just a little longer might result in a far better television option. This set doesn't look like it ticks all the right boxes.

It has one 4K60Hz HDMI input.

and do we know if that is handshake compliant to accept netflix 4k over say fire tv? i made a mistake years ago buying a very expensive plasma from richer sounds which wasn't hd ready and failed some handshakes

Turn off the 'virtual' surround and the sound is perfectly OK on the one from back in Nov.

Got last year's non smart TV in the bedroom and I honestly have to say it's been great, blacks are poor in darkness but overall picture quality is actually very good once you set it up right. For £300 it was an absolute bargain so this must be a total steal!
brookysm
28 May 16#30
Yes it will, last year's model does with my fire box tho oddly my Shield wouldn't run any HD or 4k Netflix stuff on it. Sacked off Netflix so don't know if this has since been fixed.

Not many quality branded 48" Smart TVs at this price point that aren't Vestals.....

LG TV's ARC outputs aren't usually on HDMI 2.0's either!
jameshothothot
28 May 16#33
thanks for feedback! though weird your shield didn't work? do they have different degree of copy protection than the fire tv?
brookysm
29 May 16#34
Not sure tbh, know the difference is the Fire Box is HDMI 1.4 and the Shield 2.0 so might be a incompatibility issue with the copy protection handshake. Both my Shields work fine on my LG so it is something to do with the TV and the app.
jameshothothot
29 May 16#35
oh that sounds right if fire box is hdmi 1.4 and shield 2.0 as then suggests this tv doesn't have 2.0
brookysm
30 May 16#36
Definitely has 2.0, the Shield is outputting at 3840x2160/60.

I've bought one today for my new house. I haven't plugged it in yet to be honest but there was 1 left in the Burton On Trent store and they had got 10 in and sold almost immediately. But there was one left after I bought one.

anybody using this primarily for PC viewing? (4x 1080p 24") notice any mouse lag at 60hz?
