Well yes I agree to a point (although the chap posting about fat and juices dripping onto lava rocks also has a point) but cooking outside is nice. I have both gas and charcoal BBQ's. The charcoal one I use when friends are round for a full day/evening of cooking and drinking, the gas one I use when it's a nice evening and I'm enjoying the garden and want to cook quickly with no fuss. I went for years with just the charcoal one but I can fully see the good points in both.

Im no expert, but I figured that the BBQ taste comes from the fat from the food dripping down onto the coals which burns / ignites and makes smoke, which rises through the food to give the taste. Gas BBQ's have lava rocks which heat up from below using gas, that does exactly the same thing - its just somewhere for the fat to go and then burn and make smoke. Its not the same as putting them on a gas hob. The only difference I see is that burning charcoal you get some of the charcoal taste in your burger too, - which should technically be nil - charcoal is wood that has had all the bad stuff taken out of it, it should burn very cleanly - thats the point of charcoal i thought.

I wouldn't buy one because I like cooking on a coal BBQ. It's unfair to say it's cooking outside though unless when you cook burgers on the hob you put them straight on without a pan.

never seen the point of a Gas BBQ. May as well burn it inside.

Probably a good deal, but is a gas bbq not basically cooking outside?
