My daughter is a student. She doesn't cry that she is short of money. This will be a great deal for her as she passes a store every morning. I'd prefer she didn't boil a kettle in her car.

So being a student if your view is not agreed with you think it is inferior. Most students with an NUS card et al are 18-21. This is a small class of people. Not everyone can choose to be in this age group.

I leave McDonald's coffee to the moaning students who cry they have not enough money yet are so intelligent that they think buying a coffee makes sense instead of making their own! Students should live within their means, if they know how to.

So, if there are not enough Chinese people in McDonald's can they offer a discount to them? How about 25-35 year olds? How about just men? I remember the times where people thought it acceptable that women could get free entry in to night clubs or free drinks. This was just discrimination. I never heard women complain. They do not complain about unequal pensions or free prescriptions for one year after birth (which fathers do not get). They complain about razors, yet they can buy the ones that are not pink. The sale of pink razors are lower then black or blue, so they may well cost more. The packaging is also different. Plus the brands and stupidity factor.

As for women's jeans, the design costs are higher. More detail is required and even increased size range, such as petite add to costs. Men do not have petite sizes. It is not just the cost of material and labour. There is also promotion. Adverts targeting women are higher, adding to costs.

I believe everyone should be treated equally and costs of particular goods should be the same whoever buys.
What next, £1 for bread at Tesco and 50p if your are a student? £2 if you are Indian, as you are likely to be a higher earner (statistically)? I say the same price for everyone and the same discounts for everyone.

I guess we must live in different areas as I don't know of any local coffee shop in London (that sells ground coffee - not instant) for that price. Even Wetherspoons costs something like £1.30.

I semi agree with you that woman could just buy the 'male colour' as the colour is subjective, and I know a few woman that do, however in my opinion it can't be overlooked that this is the essentially exactly the same product, bar the colour, and because it's aimed at woman, it's 50% extra. There is obviously something wrong there...

Also if you read the article (If you aren't a Guardian fan then there are quite a few more news pieces too if you look around) there are other things that are more expensive for the female version. Jeans is one example. And yes, woman 'could' wear jeans that are made to fit the male physique but at what point do we actually stop and realise that because it's for a woman it's more expensive and something is wrong with that. And to be honest with you, I struggle with this myself as the Capitalist inside me says, Supply and Demand! - If people are willing to pay more, let them. Equally, if essentially the same product costs more just because it's marketed to men or woman, it doesn't quite feel fair. If a female or male version of a product takes longer to produce, or uses more material for example, then a difference in price would be understandable.

I do think your idea of larger people on planes etc paying more has some substance though. Not necessarily weight wise, because even if everyone on the whole plane was a few stone heavier it wouldn't effect the planes ability to fly, but width wise because it is unfair when a larger person takes up some of the persons seat next to them because of their width. Regarding the luggage - The main reasons for charging more for extra luggage is 1] Additional fuel costs, though they are minimal 2] To stop people taking advantage and using it for cheap postage for instance and 3] As a way to boost profits.

My final point is about the discount at McDonald's. Rather than being outraged at 'discrimination' (which I personally don't think it is as anyone could actually become an actual student) and labelling students as people that waste money, think about it from a business point of view from McDonalds. If Mcdonalds weren't getting many students buying hot drinks/food because, being students, they probably don't have much money, then logically, if McDonald's wanted to get more students buying hot drinks/food, and they can still make a profit or use the drinks deal as a loss leader to get students in the door, it would be a smart business move on their part would you not think? Equally if a store in one part of the country was under performing and Mcdonalds wanted to boost their sales in that location and entice people locally in, I wouldn't think that is discriminating against people that live in other parts of the country (As realistically they wouldn't be able to take advantage of the offer.) I would just think they are using some business sense to try and grow the business.

That's just my take looking at it from another angle.

I firmly believe all students should pay the full cost of their education. It astounds me such "poor" people waste money on McDonald's and can afford to go to bars and pubs if they are so hard up. The unemployed or poor families cannot. It would be better to give such benefits to the unemployed.

Before you ask, I believe all student doctors sign a contract that they pay back the full £500k for their training. If they work for the NHS or in the UK for 35 years, it is written off. If they leave the UK before this period, they pay back the money before they leave on a pro-rata basis. If they do not wish to sign, they pay upfront for the costs on a yearly basis. They have nothing to lose!
This way UK plc does not waste money training doctors for them to leave the UK.

Of course a child on an plane or train should pay the same if they occupy the same seat as anyone else. Why shouldn't they? Actually some do. A 16 year old pays full fee to travel on a train to school in many areas.

What ever students earn is not relevant. The discount is not provided by HMRC, it is McDonald's.

N.B. EasyJet, Ryan Air et al charge the same price for a adult and child occupying a seat. This is sensible.

Sadly for you non-students are not a protected class (unlike gender cited previously, which is) therefore your only option is to lodge your frustration with the head office of McDonald's, and the vast majority of other retailers, and hope that they will come to your way of thinking.

No there is no discrimination in these products. They are not identical. A different colour means a different product. Women are free to buy the "male" colour and would not be stopped.

Non-students cannot buy the over-priced drink at the same price. This is pure discrimination.

One group in which the majority work and pay taxes have to pay higher prices and the other student group (who often do not work), who claim to be poor (as they waste money on overpriced drinks instead of making their own) get discounts!

If students are in debt it is their own fault when they buy coffee, alcohol and fast food. Poor people cannot afford to do this! Students live beyond their means.
