I got the same a couple of years ago for around £13 (after cashback). Unlocked and debranded easily with the instructions above.
It's not 4G, but it comes handy sometimes, works well and for the price is a lot better than the similar Huaweis (it has oled display that makes more sense, has an external antenna plug, etc).

What does this actually Do?

Exactly what the title says! It is a portable WiFi unit, you stick a data only sim card into it and connect to it like you would with your router at home.
Limited use for most people these days as most smartphones have a hotspot feature that does the same thing.

Stick a broadband SIM in it and it's a mobile hotspot

will this work with a giffgaff son which runs off o2's masts?

Indeed it will.

Will these work abroad?
If I bought a foreign data SIM card for a week or so and used it on all my devices, could this potentially work??
Edit: what's the battery usage of this compared to others? Ta

The weakest point of the device. ZTE rates the device up to 4 hours of continuous use, and this is generally what I see give or take an hour or so.
Unfortunately, the device takes quite a long time to charge, well over 3.5 hours to full capacity. This is not something you’ll be able to charge for 10 minutes at the coffee shop and expect it to last an entire evening. More here

Shame about the battery life and massive charge time or I might have got one.

I'd say you are much better with the 4g Huawei (with 15gb 30 day) or the Ospray (with 1gb?) for £20. The ospray being the best device but the Huawei coming with a decent amount of data (and also a better device than this)

Although It's not 4g it still does upto 21mbps (which is still faster than a lot of peoples home broadband) The good thing about this device is it tells you how much data you have left and it's a bargain at £14.99.

Really?????? So this will go faster than my SKY broadband? Any time I use 3G on my phone it's more like bloody old style dial up.

Buy a portable battery pack to recharge it on the go, problem solved.

this device all you do is plug in the charger and it works as a wifi hotspot while charging.

I got one of these, unlocked it yesterday - Got a Three 3GB Sim Data card in it today and it's not giving out the wifi.
It says "Limited Service - Disconnected" on the ZTE.
Do I need to activate the Sim before using it?

the apn or settings will need changing from o2 to 3 for this to work.

I have, and I still haven't got it to work. Normally i'm OK with technology. Set the APN to three.co.uk, user & pass is blank, but it isn't connecting.
I also manually set the network to Three, and tried and still no worky.

you could try the sim card in a 3g or 4g phone this is strange as i have Huawei mifi and data sim cards work ok with that one.

Tried this too, thanks for the assistance - It didn't help though :disappointed:
I put the Sim in my phone, Internet worked OK however got a SMS message saying "We can't automatically change the internet on your phone" (And yes, I turned wifi off before checking!)
Any other ideas? I move house on Wednesday and wont have internet access for a week until the new connection is made.

limited service means you have to do network search if this does not fix the problem then i do not know what the problem could be.

are you sure it is unlocked.

It is, (I've reflashed it twice now using the link in the first post) - However it doesn't have an IMEI listed when I log in. I assume thats the issue - I was just gonna pay £1.80 to someone on ebay to unlock also incase its not taking the software in the first link. However doesn't seem to be doable without the IMEI.
Also, the firmware on the first link is different to what is on the device so I assume that's the issue - I'll spend some time googling now I have some internet access!

is the ime number like 000000 good luck getting sorted.
CDR
12 Apr 161#31
Nope it's just left blank on the status page on 192.168.0.1
I've found an old iPhone 4 so using that + the sim card for a Three 3gb data as a hotspot so at least I have internet in my new home until installation date!
The ZTE will go in the bin as an hour of googling and it looks like it's bricked.

I had the exact same problem but I fixed it by following this

I too tried that but it didn't fix the problem. I'm guessing because I tried the flash again when it had no imei that the Channel1.nvm it made the 2nd time didn't have an imei to restore from

the ime number should be under the battery or on the box.
