just so people are aware as I've just found out. it's NOT technically xbox live credit. It's Microsoft credit. Not all xbox games allow you to use this credit.

Please explain more - I've got a few hundred pounds in my Microsoft account and can assure you that xbox credit and Microsoft credit are the same thing in all but name. No games are restricted AFAIK unless you can prove me wrong?

I tried to buy duck tales remastered on xbox 360. it didn't work. I then did a live chat session. After doing multiple checks I was told Microsoft credit doesn't apply to all games

Depends. The quick answer is "yes", but for example the Hitman Complete Collection is £45 digital but has a 10% discount this week so is £41. If I use this money then that works out as about another 24% discount so that's £31. I also get back 6% on Xbox Rewards against the £41 so that's around another £2.50 meaning a £45 game has cost me less than £29.
I tend to hold out for these kinds of deals where I can buy credit at a discount of 20% or so, meaning I usually buy games cheaper than I can from Amazon, etc. Of course, I can't resell digital, but I never resell physical anyway so for me it works out.

If you can buy from other regions then it is much cheaper but it can be a pain to set it all up. I did buy Shovel Knight today for £4 though and using the example given above, Hitman is £29 on the Russian store.

It's a bit fiddly to set up the first time, but once you've done it once, it's easy. I do it through a web browser rather than my xbox - sign in, switch to another region on xbox.com, buy the game, done. Game is added to my library just like any game I'd bought from the UK store.
Use the Revolut app for buying - it's basically a digital wallet that you top up, but they give you a virtual card that you can use for buying stuff + there are no fees for buying stuff in other currencies.
