This is the message I get when trying to buy it.
Sorry, we don't have enough Whirlpool 8kg, 1400rpm spin speed Washing Machine with 6th SENSE Technology, WWDC 8440 items in stock right now. This item (s) has been added to your save for later basket. You can try to purchase this item again by reducing its quantity.

Placed my order a couple of hours ago....Tesco have just phoned to explain the WWDC8440 has been discontinued but they would subsitute the WWDC8220-2 for the same price....they reckoned it was a higher spec, but appears to me it is lower (1200 spin vs 1400). Still a good deal ?

29 Apr 16#16
I just had that same phone call, i said no as wasn't sure about the different specs, i was told it was 1200 spin but everything else is the same. Not sure if i will accept the deal or not in the end

I'll probably bite to be fair....not quite as good spec wise, but still a good deal for £169...likely to struggle to find an 8kg WM for that price

yes same i think, 8kg still and our current washing machine is only 1000rpm, checked my orders page and it says order is ready for dispatch, I'm going to contact them and see what deal can be done

I've got the 9kg version. If it's anything to go by, it's very good. A bit excessive for me considering I'm living on my own, until the family come back from uni...! Have to save my clothes for a month before I can fill up the machine! Runs very quiet as well. Not sure how it affects my energy bills though because I pay monthly fixed, so can't really help you there. Just took Whirlpool's word for it being an A+++++ efficiency.
Only drawback for me is that my one doesn't have a timer delay function on it so I have to be awake to wash clothes.

The 6th sense technology is that it senses when the guarantee has run out and promptly fails.

I personally find it really bad that a machine with only a B rating for spin can be given an overall A+++ rating. Without a decent spin, you waste a lot of energy drying them.

30 Apr 161#25
Surely that depends how you dry them

Nope, there's only about 4 days a year where you can dry them effectively outdoors :OP

These energy labels are a bit misleading these days. Firstly, it shows grades B/C/D on the label, yet you can't buy these any more. You can't really sell anything below A in the EU any more. It might be of use to compare the model you are replacing though, I guess.
Secondly, it's worth noting at this point that A+++ is the highest energy rating, but all A+++ are not the same. You can't do any better than A+++ so washers that only just scrape inside the band are shown the same as those that are considerably better. Here's mine for comparison, on the right:
You'll see water use is the same, despite having 1kg of extra capacity. You'll see it's A rated for spin, despite being 1600rpm and you'll see the Whirlpool used 48% more energy - despite being the same energy rating.
Ignore the energy ratings, look at the real numbers. This washer uses as much energy as my tumble dryer.

True, but also look at the real costs, if your washing machine is only a few quid more then great, please link everyone to where we can buy it. But assuming average usage, your machine saves 63kWh/annum, which on my day rate for example of 12.238p per kWh is £7.71 per year. Since I run mine at night at a rate of 5.492p, if I were to be an average user, that would be only £3.46 per year.
Now I am not saying that this is the only consideration either, you have a Miele which is most definitely a brand recognised for reliability, and therefore we would hope the machine will last longer as well so maintenance and longevity also need to be considered long term. I am just saying that if we are looking at the real number, we don't just want to look at a percentage increase in running cost, as 48% increase in the cost of using a washing machine, rising from say £15.91 per year to £23.92, makes far less of an impact to the wallet than say the same percentage would on my TV license or my car insurance (only using these examples as they are both annual costs rather than single purchases and things that most people would understand are significantly more expensive to start with).

Whirlpool, an American company also own Hotpoint, the manufacturer of the tumble dryers that catch fire, a problem they refuse to take seriously. It may be fine but would you trust a company that does not care squat about your safety?

All good points. I wasn't attempting to draw attention at all to the make or model of my appliances - they cost a ridiculous £2000 each - it was just data I had to hand.
My point is purely that people need to ensure they don't regard all A+++ machines as the same. They aren't. A 1600rpm spin will get laundry considerably drier than a 1200 or 1400rpm machine. This can save you loads when drying using a tumble dryer or in a heated room..
Many manufacturers are now adapting machines simply to fall into the headline A+++ category. This could easily have been a 1600rpm machine but, if it did, it likely wouldn't achieve the A+++ rating due to the extra energy consumed in that spin cycle. Instead of using a more efficient spin mechanism, they limit the top speed instead. A good spin is less important to them than getting the A+++ rating. To a buyer, I'd say the spin is more important.
An A++ machine with a 1600rpm spin is likely more efficient overall than a A+++ machine with a slower spin.

I couldn't agree more with this, I think it is definitely worth working out the annual cost difference between two machines if say one falls in A++ and has a 1600rpm spin and another falls in A+++ and has a 1400rpm spin, as you say, you could have a top A++ and bottom A+++ so as I have shown the running cost difference could be minimal and worth dropping to A++ for the extra spin.
I certainly wouldn't spend £2000 on a washing machine, if however Miele wanted to send me a free sample to review, I would be happy to oblige.

£2000 on a washing machine is a bit mad, but it's an amazing piece of kit. £2000 on the matching dryer though...more money than sense ;O)

I assume the RPM comparison would only be valid if the drum diameters were the same. No idea if drums differ in size. Perhaps I will bring my meaning tape to the show room next time

Not to mention the spin time. That's why there is a spin performance rating, which people universally seem to ignore for some bizarre reason.
