some stupid bargains to be had, no idea how long stock will last though

just grabbed a WD My book 3TB recertified drive for £43.99 delivered!

Also My Book 2TB (Recertified) is £34.19 delivered amongst others

Use code WDSPRING16 at checkout

Also tried on full price and worked eg £45.80 off a 6TB blue drive

Don't forget, if you have a company account, and can use its VAT number, you don't pay VAT

Dont think I could ever trust a recertified drive, it basically means its already broken once. Sure its been through procedures to make it comply to WD's criteria but doesn't change the fact that the drive failed. Also a very low warranty. If you can afford to loose whatever you put on the drive, or you back it up somewhere, yeah sure, good deal.

6 months is very short for a hard drive, usually 3-5 years.
"WD recertified products may consist of customer return units"
That could mean anything. Could be customer error, the drive failed, the power board failed etc. Its a gamble.

Not saying its not a good deal
£43.99 for a 3TB desktop drive is amazing value, but you have to be willing to take the risk.

Not necessarily. Read the blurb for what constitutes a re-certify.
And tbh an individually repaired unit will have had more time and care applied than an off the production line one.
Thinking of one for my Freeview TV for recording on. I could stand to lose anything on that.

If you're backing ANY data up to ANY single source you're a moron. A brand new drive to fail almost as likely.

I agree that 6 month warranty is pretty poor. They could of at least gave it a years warranty.

On the other hand, I read quite a few times from a WD rep that their refurbed units are tested to much greater lengths then their factory fresh units just to make sure that their hard drives are good.

A lot maybe customer returns as the WD software is abysmal. Had my 2TB Mycloud a day and its going back as the software just doesnt work (WD want me to mess around with DHCP settings in my router to get their WD Sync software working). Its really complicated so I'm sending it back.

Good luck with that! My 2TB cloud arrived yesterday and its a complete pile of crap. These are just some of my problems with it so far:-

WD SYNC – Cannot connect to remote server – used freefilesync instead to sync folders instead

WD ACCESS – Wouldnt allow folder mapping, had to download and use WD DISCOVERY utility

WD Smartware - failed to find 80% of my data to back up!

WINDOWS SYSTEM IMAGE – couldn’t back up to NAS as refused to accept NAS network credentials

Only way I could see all my shares on my PC was to make ALL the folders public! So, basically no security at all.

Tried to copy from attached 1TB drive and network error after 23% and NAS inaccessible. Pulled the plug on the NAS and restarted it.

NAS becomes unavailable when copying a large amount of data (>5GB). Have to disconnect and re-map the drive.

SONARR – wont copy downloaded files from PC to NAS.

Many files will just not copy from PC to NAS. States I must have administrator privileges (I have). I grant permission then it states that the NAS is unavailable!

So far, in 22 hours only managed to copy 110GB of my 1TB data to my NAS. WD support don’t answer the phones.

Its going back to Holland!

these may say recertified but are mainly old or overstock items. they just say recertified so they don't have to give you a 12 month warranty, I have used 3 of the 1tb drives and one is over 12 months old and still works perfect, the only thing I was gutted about was you can crack them open you cannot use them in a laptop

I purchased 30 x 3TB units a while back they were all boxed and new shipped direct. Seems the factory knock these out (note the enclosure, PSU and drive all had factory labels saying recertified) perhaps as set aside for warranty claims etc.sure some might be returns but they set aside a certain number and after some time if the return rates are low they release the stock via this store. For the ones I purchases all fine but the drives controllers are lock to WD Green for the 3TB units like this:http://wdmybook3tb.blogspot.co.uk/ details on opening and rehouse drive without breaking the tabs

Agreed Any devices new / recertified / other should not ever be you only copy: 3 copies 2 different media 1 off site http://www.dpbestflow.org/backup/backup-overview

But then stop think : this is storage where I want to keep my data

are they fixing these drive by replacing some parts or it is new drive inside ?
if it is drive which used 24 hr say for 1 year then fail sent to repairs The other side got new drive me buying his fail drive as re certificated
MatsyLR to Incognitoso
5 Apr 16 #23
They are customer returns that either has nothing wrong with them (customer error), the drive died, the power board died, the usb connection died etc. Could be anything and then repaired.
They could also be old drives (new, just not sold) they need to get rid off.

Is it worth paying £67.99 for 3TB portable?
MatsyLR

Exactly. I agree with you. I wouldn't trust them personally.
They are a good option if the things you plan to store is not that important/replaceable. Or if you plan to backup the data regardless.

MyBook 3TB for me and my Xbox. At £43.99 delivered, it was rude not to

And for anyone worried about "recertified" drives, don't be in this case. This is from the manufacturer, I've ordered from them before and I wouldn't be surprised if they were brand new and have to be listed as recertified just to stop the other resellers they sell through from complaining.
118luke to tanked
6 Apr 16 #104
Exactly, some drivel being spouted on this thread. The components that caused the drive to fail have been replaced by the manufacturer. The drive has then been retested and recertified. You are effectively getting a new drive at a fraction of the cost. Ive bought recertified drives before and not had any problems.

So what? you trust one of these drives which has most likely been damaged/failed in some way the same as a brand new sealed drive?
Yeah no. There is a reason they reduce the warranty so much.
Sure all hard drives will die eventually, no one saying they don't. Just that there is a big reason these are so cheap.
The drives will for the most part be perfectly fine and last years, just like sealed drives, but its still a gamble with repaired drives.

Not quite, but good of you to highlight data is more important than hardware warranty. You need to buy disks in pairs (or alternative backup method). On the basis that only one copy fails at a time, then you recover your data, and get your hardware disk money back by warranty or a replacement disk.

Except external portable drives are more likely to receive a knock than an internal one in your desktop PC, or a in a NAS, or better still in a server in a secure data center with proper data recovery options.

If you care about your data do not put all your faith in a single local backup. Off site is the only way to be sure.

And yeah I would trust one of these drives to move files around from one place to another - which is what these are designed for. They're not a backup solution even when they were new.

Don't waste your money, its old tech with limits to what video formats it can play as well as being ham strung by its small amount of Apps.

I had one from amazon and returned it within a few weeks and was more than glad that i could get rid of it.In contrast my Nvidia shield TV surpassed it in every conceivable way and does a a lot more. The WD TV has a low powered CPU and certainly wont play 4k.To Top that off i found the user interface clunky, ugly and slow and just not slick at all.

There's much better and up to date players knocking around these day.

I had (and still have, but no longer use) the version of WDTV Live before the current one and I'd agree with the first reply you got that it is outdated now, It served me well and I thought it was great, but it's surpassed by most boxes that can run Kodi (Fire stick, Fire TV, Android boxes, etc), and if you can justify spending a bit more the Nvidia Shield is a great piece of kit.

This is a key point. Half of my internal and external hard drives have developed some bad sectors over the years. But the only complete failures, were, twice, dropping external hard drives, when each time the connector wire got caught in something causing it to fall/be dropped. Then you write off the drive or learn of the joys of attempting a clean air enclosure, trying to track down the same drive to frankenstein the damaged read/write head, typically off ebay where everyone else is paying above the odds for the same reason because the original drive is no longer sold, and for which any errors in the very delicate process can damage the new head, it's that fragile. Or risk to the platter from any dust. So whilst a warranty is important, it never protects against the risk of dropping an external HD....

I have used one for years although not so much now. It plays nearly every single format. I do not have any issues with it, apart from it not being able to play 10 bit encodes for the anime that I watch. You can delete straight from the hard drive, play blu ray ISO’s, there is also a lip sync function that allows you to, correct any issues when the audio is slightly out of sync, also stream straight from your PC. No complaints from me. The TV I have now, plays the same formats LG 42LF580V 42 Inch Smart WiFi Built In Full HD 1080p LED TV, although not ISO, and not FLAC audio. Also the tv loads two full 3tb drives in seconds. WD is quick enough but, with two full drives of 3tb, which the majority will not have connected it takes a while. You can pay more for better I, just wanted it for viewing straight from the hard drive, and it was good enough for that.

I hear all the valid arguments (old stock, set asides, well tested etc etc) and can agree with them.......but if these are highly unlikely to break down, why is a huge company like WD only giving a 6 month warranty?!
I've had no issue buying other manufacturer refurbished items in the past...but you always get 12 months warranty.....
tfish
6 Apr 16 #149
" Possible Break down" shouldnt even be an issue. You should always have two copies of everything
Sf2rox to tfish
6 Apr 16 #151
Yeah i had to quote that in tech support too, for legal reasons (usually just before a format\debug.)

This is literally the last component you'd want to buy 2nd hand, well worst than 2nd hand, broken and glued back together and the fact it contains moving parts which will already have been worn and reduced its lifespan by X amount of time, not to mention all the time in transit going back and forth which will increase the risk of damaging the surface.

I'd go as far to say spend MORE on your hard drive if you value whatever you are gonna put on it. Me personally if i'm buying a mechanical drive then I usually opt for the more expense server grade ones primarily for reliability purposes.

Then again if you just want a portable to carry around with you where you don't really care about preserving the data then i guess it would be fine.

I wouldn't doubt that a WD rep would say that... the length of testing isn't really relevant though, it either works when tested at that point in time or it doesn't. Unless they plan to perform a destructive longevity test on it, they don't know how long it is going to last. This is why the warranty period is so valuable because it tells you how long they expect to be able to guarantee it for based on their MTBF rates / confidence in the product / etc.

7 Apr 16 #169
Via pc windows file explorer. Tried with my wd 1tb drive connected direct to the nas and also to my pc usb. Permission problems and nas inaccessible errors constantly
Peter9588
7 Apr 16 #170
I read that if you connect your external usb to the drive, it still copies via you computer i.e.

usb drive - mycloud - router - computer - router - mycloud.

Try using an FTP client, filezilla to copy data from the external usb connected to the mycloud.

But yes I am a little worried that I've just wasted 65 quid on a doorstop....
chocci to Peter9588
7 Apr 16 #171
That makes sense as I was only getting 5MB/s when connected to the nas via USB (so dont even think of going down this route for mirroring lol). Getting 30-40MB/s via my PC USB (2.0) so no problem there. Just keeps disconnecting the NAS after about 10-20GB so its going to take me a while to copy another 850MB

As I say, dont bother with the WD utilities as they are useless.
Peter9588
7 Apr 16 #172
Actually I *think* mirroring should be ok. It seems in that direction My Cloud - External, it is direct. God knows why they did it like that.

Also I'm sure you are but having the laptop connected to ethernet should bring the transfer speed up too.
chocci
7 Apr 16 3 #173
I have a desktop PC connected via ethernet. NAS still keeps becoming inaccessible every 10 minutes (common problem apparently). Its going to take me days to transfer my data at this rate.

I think I am going to follow this guys advice (should you really have to search amazon reviews on how to set this thing up lol)

A real shame, despite some of the other reviews I still had high hopes for this product and the ability to have a home network based on this NAS drive. The setup is quite straight forward but I ran into problems with the drive disconnecting itself from the network on the first day. I rang WD support (free phone to the US) and they asked me to re-boot the drive which then reconnected it. It has been less than a week and I have had to re-boot to reconnect the drive around 8 times. It appears that every time you switch user accounts on my Windows 7 PC it drops the connection to the NAS drive and it does not restore when you switch back, or even if the computer goes into sleep mode it also drops and does not reconnect. Additionally the WD Smartware backup software does not work. It should automatically back up the PCs hard drive but has only backed up 80% and then just stopped, omitting my very important Outlook email pst backup files. WD say it only backs up emails once a day and if Outlook is running when it tries to, it fails. So I tried switching on the computer and not launching Outlook, just the Smartware, but the backup again failed to backup my emails. It also has a number of .avi files that it chooses not to backup either. I have since found a number of posts on the WD support forums with the same issues, but no solutions. WD have asked for a log of the drive activity and say they will come back to me. However 2 calls to support concerning 2 elementary and fundamental issues within the first week makes me suspect that I will be formatting the drive to wipe it of my data and returning it to Amazon. No one is more disappointed than me considering I've had WD products for the last 8 years or so and have always been very happy with them. It this turns around I will re-post with any positive developments.

Update 5/9/14

Following the reply to this review by WD and their advice I did the following... apologies if this appears elementary to you seasoned IT users out there but this might just help those in the same position I found myself. Incidentally I have the 2TB NAS attached directly to my Virgin Media Super Hub, and running Windows 7 on my PC.

Assigning a static IP address: fairly straight forward, follow the WD article 11384. However when you need to input the Static Network Mode, right click over your internet connection in the bottom right of your screen, this should give you a prompt to Open Network and Sharing Centre. Open this and screen middle you will have `View your active networks' and to the right of this click on `Local area connection'. This launches a small window with a `Details' button in the centre. Click on that for the Static Network Mode details. You must also tell your router to reserve that IP address for your My Cloud. On the VM hub this is under `advanced settings' then `DCHP', then DCHP reservation. Open this and under attached devices you should see your My Cloud. Click in the circle adjacent left and then below click on the button `add reservation'. That should then assign that IP address to your My Cloud all the time.

Port Forwarding: Article 8526 tells you how to do this but does not tell you which ports to use! I've never done this before and just could not get it to work at all. Spoke to WD who simply sent me a copy of the same article. So here you go... on the VM Hub, advanced settings, security, port forwarding, I set up first port as WD1, start and end port both 8080, protocol as TCP & UDP, and entered the static IP address you assigned above. Then set the second as WD2, start and end port as 8443, protocol and IP address as per first one.

Then on the WD My Cloud control panel (accessed by putting the assigned static IP address into the address bar of Internet explorer) under settings, general, scroll down to Cloud access, switch on Remote access, then click configure adjacent. Select Manual, then port 1 as 80, and port 2 as 443. I then had to then switch it to auto for it to work before selecting it back to manual and it remained connected.

Mapping the network drive: article 2676 works well and is straight forward, make sure you click the `reconnect at logon box'. Seems to have maintained my separate users and SmartWare connected to the NAS even after the computer has gone to sleep or having switched Windows users.

WD suggested enabling Volume snapshot service to allow SmartWare to backup services that are running... this is also better known as Volume Shadow Copy Service. If you search in Google for this with your operating system you will get straight forward instructions on how to enable this on your PC.

Now having done all this will it stop my NAS disconnecting from the Network, Allow SmartWare to backup all my files and not only a chosen few? Only time will tell... I will re-post with an update...

Update 25/09/14...

I still have the NAS... Somehow it settled down and now remains connected to my network and SmartWare seems to now be backing up all my files to it... Summary: its fiddly, cumbersome and time consuming to set up (see above) but once its working its not a bad back up drive for £99. I have an iPad backing up photos to it with the free app and have my computer on continuous file backup too. I have also saved all my music to it and Sonos had no problem finding it and accessing it, together with the album cover art and song lists too... So all in all I'm now happy with this and glad I persevered, but came so very close to returning it!

Many thanks for the instructions on port forwarding, excellent and precise and has probably saved me a couple of hours or tweaking to get this working and suss out the final settings. Followed to the letter and worked first time. A little appreciation goes a long way in my book and I'm glad there are people out there like you willing to share there knowledge and pay it forward.

Dear Mrs M.,

We regret to hear about your experience and sincerely apologize for the inconvenience you have had, as these are not the intended results with the My Cloud and our support.

Please be mindful that the My Cloud NAs is supported with any router that uses a 10/100 (Fast Ethernet) or a 1000 (Gigabit) interface. Given the details of your review, it is important to verify that your My Cloud NAS latest firmware is running alongside the firmware on your LAN's router, as our latest updates should in fact address these concerns.

The best performance will be on a Gigabit port, we also recommend following the link below to show you the best stable network setup.

"When transferring large files to or from a Personal Cloud drive, performance may be slower than expected":
http://wdc.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/5736/

Should a My Cloud device become unavailable on your network, we recommend assigning a Static IP address to the drive, and if you are using a switch or hub, please connect the My Cloud directly to a port on the back of your router to isolate the potential issue. The following link will provide you with detailed instructions on how to configure the My Cloud as well as setup your router for Remote Access.

"How to enable port forwarding on a network router for use with a WD My Cloud EX4 Personal Cloud drive":
http://wdc.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/10649

When switching user account or when the computer goes into sleep mode on windows 7, connectivity is dropped, we recommend changing the energy saving setting to the value that is suitable to the computer and also enable the option "reconnect at logon" when mapping the drive, to ensure the reconnection of the My Cloud, when logging in with another user account.

Please also note that, if the network storage has Private Shares, Windows will request for the user to provide his or her credentials.

The below link will provide you with detail on mapping the network drive for Windows and reconnecting at logon.
http://wdc.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/2676/

If Smartware is not backing up specific files, we would recommend verifying that these files are not in use by another application during the backup process. If Outlook is not backing up after the n

A re-certified 1TB Elements I ordered last week arrived today.
I ran the short and extended tests using the WD Diagnostics tool you can find on their website and all good,no bad sectors.
The drive arrived in brown box packaging and has a sticker on the rear that states Re-certified in Vietnam.

I plan to use the drive to back up my flac music collection and to move around with me so if it dies it's not so bad.It would be nice to get a few years out of it and the only drives I've had fail on me were Seagate so ,fingers crossed.

Bought a refurb 2TB buffalo NAS in 2011 and has been on 24/7 for over 4 years, the drive is now failing so I think that's a pretty good run. £60 was a great price which turned into a steal 2months later with the floods etc. If these survive as long I will be well happy.

Think you were unlucky as I had three drives this time and two last time it was on and all have looked perfect, could be new but for the plain packaging and performed perfectly too. This time I got a passport ultra 1TB and one in 3TB and a MyBook 3TB and all have been as new, if it wasn't for packaging and the sticker on the back that says "recertified in vietnam" (on mine at least) these could easily pass for brand new....

Love these WD store sales, hope they keep on doing them, just a shame they don't offer many internal drives, though thanks to USB3 an external can be nearly as good....

14 Apr 16 #210
Tested the drive it went off twice during testing only to find that the USB connection is not aligned between the casing and the connector bit of its is hiding in the casing so you have to use a bit of force more than i would like to , further smartmontools suggests there is 145 "Reallocated Sectors" its been used for nearly a year( 297 days )i was expecting that but not reallocated sectors is this normal for re-certified drives ? can any one tell me please ! should this be going back?
