You are hiring the car for the quoted amount for the indicated term. The hirer needs to pay for insurance and servicing during the hire term (and maybe optional gap insurance), plus any damage beyond reasonable wear and tear at the end of the hire, plus any excess mileage. For additional clarity: the hirer does not and will not ever own the car. The theory is the hirer should benefit by effectively paying less than the equivalent cost of depreciation of the vehicle's value over the stated term compared to if the hirer had actually bought the vehicle and subsequently sold it at the end of the equivalent term.

Its still only £5598 for 10k miles which looks like a decent deal to me - £2400 up front + £128 a month and £239 admin

23x£197.62 + 592.86 initial payment + 239.99 fee = £5378 (will need to amend the price in title, can't see option to do this from mobile app?) Slightly cheaper if you can afford higher initial:
23x£111.16 + 2400 initial payment + 239.99 fee = £5196

10k miles = £5776 so even better deal?

Wrong.
£6k to lease a car that will depreciate by £8k over the same period.
You have to do your sums, but sometimes leasing can be an excellent option. particularly for petrol heads like me who want to change their car every two years.

Why?

Lease and pcp are the most common why to get a new car. 59% of people used pcp to get a car in 2015, majority of the remainder leased a car, a small number used finance and a miniscule amount of people paid the full amount

80% of Mercs and about 75% of BMW and Audi are on pcp

Just bought a pre facelift Scirocco myself, was considering leases but ended up buying. I came from an older Audi TT and the Scirocco is very refined, the adaptive chassis control means it's Jekyll and Hyde, in comfort mode its lazy and relaxing soaks up all the rough roads. In sports mode the throttle response is very obviously sharper, suspension firms up and steering weights up. I've got the 210bhp GT model (same engine as this deal) but in a different state of tune, feels like a grown up Renault Sport Clio (of which I have owned a couple) I'd recommend the Scirocco, a nice place to be if you have the heated leather interior its even nicer.

Very wrong, lease deals are among the most popular deals on HUKD, and rightly so they offer the chance to save thousands upon thousands of pounds compared to the depreciation lost when buying a new or even nearly new car.

I normally buy a new or nearly new top end car in cash, get the best discount possible on it normally minimum 10% from a regular dealer or sometimes nearer 30% by importing or buying one with a few miles on. I will choose a quality car which holds value, Ilook after it and choose a new model which will not look dated in the years to come. I then keep it for around 5 or 6 years. I am yet to find a cheaper way of doing things.

Yeah i agree defo worth the wait for a good deal, only reason that one was cheaper was because it was the pre facelift model, they did this with the 1 series 125d and focus st etc just before the new one arrived to get rid of the last few. They also do these deals when a car isnt selling as well as they'd hoped.

Am I the only one that thinks;

"It's 2016, the list price is over £25k and they still want extra for cruise, heated jets and e-fold mirrors?"

Btw I am not one of those habitual VW bashers (it's a love/hate thing), but even an old 2005 grand-dad spec Ford Focus I used to have had cruise and heated jets as standard. Even the Polo I rented in Spain had cruise!

Why are they so tight with what is just basic kit nowadays?

I don't lease and never have leased but I certainly see the appeal of them. I'm sick of my skip of a 3 series breaking down so on the lookout for a good deal but not a fan of the looks of the Scirocco. Shame I missed that Cactus deal

I'd have to go to Scotland to pick it up and bring it back to NI on the ferry as dealers here can't get anywhere near some of these silly lease prices.

I too find these lease deals confusing. I understand that it beats depreciation but why would I want to pay £5600 for two years motoring in a low performance car I have to worry about all the time?
I have an 04 535d tourer that cast me 10k 5 years ago. It's cost me about £3k in general maintenance (tyres have been £1k of this) and I can still get £6k for it due to the spec. £7k for 5 years of twin turbo fun in the lap of luxury, with room to move home in the back, sounds like a better deal to me. I've looked and can't find anything to replace it so my deal gets better by the day

Still a hot deal if you want new every couple of years.

cycleman
17 Apr 16 3 #61
I just bought a new car, spent a long time researching whether to lease or buy, in my situation buying made more sense.
I tend to keep a car a fairly long time, about 5 years, with a 5 year warranty on the car I bought and the lease payments being hardly less than finance, just didn't make sense.
I've in fact financed the car myself as I'd saved enough to be able to do so so I'm actually paying myself back interest free!
Everyone is of course in different situations but I'd advise people to think long and hard before committing to any long term financial commitment in the current economic climate.

Got a Focus Zetec myself in Nov'14. £120pm plus the original deposit of £1400ish on a 10k per year deal thru' Tilsun. Around £4300 for 2 years care-free driving including my expected excess mileage overhead. Works out at an average monthly outlay of £180 for the 2 year lease. Servicing is one top but I would have paid that anyway on any car I had.

TBH I'd never thought about leasing before and was actually looking to buy a Freelander2 to replace a well used Picasso that was in need of a new clutch, amongst other squeaks and rattles etc. By the time I'd settled on a decent model I was looking at taking a loan out for 8k for a 7 year-old car, which was replacing a 10-year old Citroen.

So I just did the maths.
New clutch - around £300 at very best. 12m Car tax - £130 I think, also due.
Went to my local Webuyanycar guy and got £400 for the Citroen.
Repaying 8k over 3 years would have been around £275pm and over 5 years, £180pm.

So for me, in my situation, the lease was a no-brainer and I have not regretted it at all. The first 6 months effectively free driving as I didn't have to fix or tax the Picasso, saving the £430 and I had £400 from WBAC.com.
No direct loan to pay off and no 10 year-old car to replace with another loan deal come 2017 (at the earliest).

Just do the sums and see if leasing suits.
Voted HOT for me because this is the sort of thing I'll be looking at soon. I just hope something like this will be available in Aug/Sept when I assume I'll be getting a call from Tilsun for my next order.

Side-issue: A mate a work cannot see the worth in leasing, it being a 'complete waste of money' and insists buying used is better.
He got a 6k 2nd hand car on loan last year, trading in an older car for an 08 plate. Had an electrical fault recently causing the car to regularly go into limp-home mode. He's already paid £400 and still not resolved the issue and had to hire a Ford Ka (of all things !) at Easter to visit family 300 miles away and couldn't trust that journey to his own car. He's now looking for a newer car because he has no faith in what he's got
Loan+garage fees+hire car + lost days in not being able to come to work 'cos the car won't play fair + earache because he can't take the missus shopping etc?
I'm not laughing. Honest.

so you pay 50k plus for a top end car and get only 10% discount. got more than that on a pcp deal. even cars that hold their value still lose tens of thousands. you are in a minority. most people with that much cash will pcp or lease and invest the cash in property to offset the depreciation and make a massive paper profit. no dealer will take cash and they won't offer cash buyers anything like the percentage you suggest. same goes for importing. somehow I don't believe you unless you are in the trade

As already been said do the maths, your style of driving also need to be considered amongst other things.

As I see it having used numerous methods to obtain a car over the years:

Leasing:

Main Pros- Little up front cost, new car every few years (hassle free motoring), no depreciation, not stuck with car to sell / part ex,

Main cons- Restricted on mileage / where you can go (That last minute trip to france will cost you), you never own the car, tied into a contract if circumstances change, damage has be be put right, will need GAP insurance to be safe

Buying

Main Pros- The car is yours (or when finance finished), damage can be left or patched up, can keep the car forever if circumstances change, can take it anywhere with no mileage restrictions, can service it anywhere

Main cons- Often not a new car but second hand, take the depreciation hit, stuck with a car to sell on, models change you have the older version, you have to find the cash or take a loan upfront, repair bills as car gets older

I am currently driving a Kia with 7 year warranty, I bought it at 12mths old with 5k miles on the clock at £6k less than price new, its now 3 years old with 45k miles on the clock, as I drive an average 20k miles a year leasing was getting very expensive for me, not just due to mileage charges but also the damage the car was getting over 2 years / 40k miles, I was once hit with a £1300 bill for repairs on handing back the car, I eventually got this down to £750.

My plan is to keep the Kia for a further 3 years, by then it should have around 85k miles on it and a years warranty remaining, I will be lucky to get £4k for it then so I would of lost in depreciation alone £11k plus the cost of tyres and servicing and tax the total over the 5 years of ownership is nearer £14k, which is around £2800 per year.

With my mileage the best leasing deal I could get with the same or equivilant vehicle was an average £3400 per annum inc upfront deposits and fees, over the 5 years on leasing alone and excl any tyres or servicing it was over £16k

These figures above are based on todays prices, leasing could drop or rise in the future as could servicing costs (I have a 5 year upfront servicing package) and should my circumstances change I could keep hold of my vehicle for longer, I will not be forced to hand it back or go looking for something else.

Every is different and have different reasons, I doi find leasing deals are only really attractive these days if your doing around 10k or less miles per annum.

This works around £5508, better deal? Also has the merc engine unlike the a180.

http://www.evanshalshaw.com/car-leasing/mercedes-benz/a-class-a200d-se-5dr-offer/3337/

Excess mileage is something like 8-10p

A huge difference in insurance groups as well so the merc would be cheaper on insurance too

It's a completely different car!! An A Class is a poor (compared with competitors) expensive 5 door family car. This is a 3 door petrol coupe.

Keeping it properly serviced means it's less likely and the 535d turbos are mostly reliable. With 130k miles on it it's low mileage too  i wouldn't be paying £4k either but I understand where you are coming from. .

I got my first lease car around 6 months or so ago, got it for three years on a very good deal, but already wondering the best way to ensure I'm not without a car when the lease is up, e.g. between handing the old one back and getting a new lease. Any advice would be very much appreciated?

I got my recent lease from them. Excellent CS, and nothing seemed too much trouble, just a chap, his wife and an admin lady.
Delivery wise, that's dependent upon the availability of the car, not NVS. I originally ordered a Golf GTD with upgraded stereo and was a completely new build, so a 3 month wait. VW got the order wrong, so NVS let me know and said that if I wasn't bothered about the stereo, then one was in stock with the dealer they use. Turned a week or two later. I'll use them again for my next lease if they have a decent deal when mine's up.
