As far as I am aware it is micro usb chargers o2 dont supply with refurb devices, I assume Apple stipulate iphone boxes on refurbs, they would not want any carrier diluting their marketing...which a iphone box is part of.

A iphone refurb can be a unwanted return or a swap under warranty when a repair is needed, repair done then resell.

If you scroll down the page a review states "Great phone but no headphones with it"

Most of the reviews seem pretty positive once you ignore the stupid ones that got a colour they didn't want or not got a charger. Most suggest condition is new like or fairly good.

I think if you have a o2 payg number you can make a account, log in and upgrade with no £10 top up, it used to allow that many years ago when I upgraded my o2 payg number.

I think you choose what payg plan you want on your sim ? Not a actual top up

zunoslash
10 Apr 16 1 #52
So basically it does come with apple warranty right?
suzyd
10 Apr 16 #53
Yes. But not the full time amount. Apple said it was covered until October. I'd purchased it in February so presumably the device was first set up last October.
pjk
10 Apr 16 #54
It seems to depend. I got one last year and it had a full warranty - checking on Apple's database showed that the 1 year started on the day I turned it on. Mine too came in a plan cardboard package and without a charger or headphones, only the USB/Lightning cable. But the phone itself was completely pristine.

11 Apr 16 #65
Welcome
Why I used 3 sim first, 3 dont lock phones - iphones bypass the locking stage with 3.

Using my Virgin sim now after 3 activation, EE this week when the unlimited 16GB sim arrives

When you swap sims you have to re-enter your Apple account password on 9.3.1 which back on iOS6/3GS it didnt.

Do the iOS update on wifi, it is a lot quicker

Hi seaniboy,

My phone is coming between 1pm and 2pm today. Just want to check before it comes that I don't mess up.

1. I've got a PAYG 3 sim. I put this in the iPhone to start with.
2. Turn on iPhone and activate.
3. Take out 3 sim and put in any other network sim as it is now unlocked.

Is this right?, is the unlock permanent?. When I come to sell the phone and set it to factory default will it still be unlocked or would it lock to whichever sim card the buyer uses? (apart from 3 sim).
seaniboy to petermartin99
12 Apr 16 #83
Yes thats whats I did  3 dont lock any phone, they bypass Apple locking the phone. So activate with a 3UK sim.

Apple devices.

"If you’ve recently bought or upgraded an iPhone from Three, it'll be unlocked as soon as you activate it over Wi-Fi or connect it to iTunes on your computer"
http://support.three.co.uk/SRVS/CGI-BIN/WEBISAPI.DLL?Command=New,Kb=Mobile,Ts=Mobile,T=Article,varset_cat=billing,varset_subcat=3772,Case=obj(4363)

A iphone locks to the network first used to activate, not with 3.

I just got one of these yesterday.
These are refurbished by Apple, but they don't sell them, they pass to mobile dealers to sell, they have had a full outer shell replacement which is standard for any Apple refurb, same as there iPads if you look on there refurb site, it's a no brainer, you are getting a new phone.
It comes in basic box, with screen and back protector fitted, (these are just until you get a proper protector) and the USB charge cable, and sim tool, and that's it, no earphones or plug.
seaniboy
12 Apr 16 #84
It will be EE, just call and explain the iphone was bought outright external to EE and the activation unknown to you (wife) locked it to EE or else they will charge to unlock.

EE know by the imei number it was not EE supplied stock.
N42
12 Apr 16 #85
Ok great idea, I'll see what comes of the O2 unlock and then will pursuit EE.

seaniboy
12 Apr 16 #86
Hi N42

Using a 3 sim activation means my 5S is never locked to any provider so I did not need to contact o2.

From past o2/iphone experience if o2 have processed the unlock you need to sync with itunes on a pc with a non o2 sim in it, try it

My iPhone has arrived. Totally dead battery wise. Charged it and after a few minutes it was fine.

I inserted the 3UK sim and activated the phone - no problems.

I removed the 3 sim and replaced with an BT sim. I had to enter my apple user id and password but once I'd done that it recognised the sim no problem. Very happy.

Checked the apple warranty and sure enough, it is under warranty until 11th April 2017.

Am i right in thinking this is an ipod touch with phone capability?

The main reason i got this phone was as a backup to my main phone and trial apple tech. If it is a decent media device then quite worth it for £154 despite its age.

If you can cope with the restrictions (or use the work arounds to get media on) then it's a very good sounding phone. It can even drive my AKG 702's pretty well. 16GB isn't a lot unless you're streaming or using home sharing from iTunes though.

This was my first iphone and I didn't expect to like it that much after years of being an Android fan. It is so much nicer than my Nexus 6 though. Easily pocketable, excellent camera, not so much in image quality particularly but more in the things that matter, like opening quickly without crashing like the Nexus often did. Or focussing well on videos rather than constantly hunting like the Nexus did. It's also great having the burst mode so easily accessible, to capture the moments that wouldn't be possible otherwise. Really understand why people love iPhones now but I'd still struggle to part with 600+ for a top of the range one.

Its now fully unlocked by 3. I am able to use other sim cards.. Only gripe is that each time I change a sim I need to reactivate the phone with Apple id /Pwd.. This is insane .. I tried a full restore still the same issue.. Now reaching out apple for help..

That is a iOS security feature, if you change sim you log in to your iphone to activate. Its theft control. Its not a iphone activation at server level but local handset security level.
The problem is not allowing the local stored touch or pin and the tedious process of entering a full Apple account password for a localised offline handset check.

Thats not true.. Unless the unlock is requested by O2 the phone activation policy ( especially this lot being sold by O2) is dictated by O2 and it is locked to EMEA networks.. I had several discussions with Apple and finally approached O2 and requested unlock through them.
Now this phone is fully unlocked ( meaning no activation required message anymore when I change the sim card )
If you are pay monthly customer O2 unlock is free..
If you use 3 sim and expect 3 to unlock it , its not a full unlock and you will only be able to use it in EMEA region..

These are Asia spec iphones though...refurbs or overstock I assume - o2 has no Asia network. Wonder if that makes a difference or not, ie not processed as full o2 stock ?

As for change of sim password, I like it in the case of stolen handset, just ID touch/pin would be the most secure way of such offline change of sim activation though, not the online Apple password.

Which also makes me think given the FBI/Apple situation obviously Touch iD from the guys home fingerprints would have been possible if it was a TiD iphone.

Interesting info you bring to the table about non EMEA sims...will need to find my Thai, SIN, HK, AU or NZ sims...if I can find the SD holder I put them in for safe keeping (lol - lost at home somewhere) to try.

Can I buy without having to buy the top up? I don't have O2 sim though. Can anyone advice please?

You just choose the £10.00 tariff and then go to checkout. You should see the only the charge of £153.99 and £0.00 for tariff/airtime. I was lucky when I checked with Apple they confirmed it was a new phone!!!

Hi all, glad i found this thread in that I feel my experience isn't unique.

Bought the grade A iPhone 5S 16gb gold on O2 refresh. Phone battery was also flat. Both plastic cover stickers front and back still on and phone looks brand new. Apple support website seems to back that theory up as the apple warranty expires 31 May 2017 (phone delivered 1st June - next day after ordering). But perhaps these are reconditioned like how apply give you a reconditioned phone at Apple Store when you have a problem - new case new battery?

Anyway, after submitting an unlock request soon after inserting the o2 sim and making and receiving a couple of calls and texts, I was curious as to whether the phone was already unlocked. Took out the o2 sim and inserted an EE sim. The phone wanted me to key in my Apple ID password to activate the phone, then after the phone screen went white with the black apple logo in the middle for a couple of seconds, I had an EE signal and was able to make calls using that sim. I put the o2 sim back in and after the same procedure to put on the Apple ID password and screen going blank again for a couple of seconds I was back on o2 network.

so now I'm thinking the phone might be unlocked, right.

Later it turns out my unlock request was unsuccessful with o2. Something about my IMEI has not been used on their network, so it will
not be possible to unlatch it.

I phoned Apple support - free until end of Aug for phone support - to ask them if the phone is locked or unlocked. The phone is locked to o2.

In a way I am glad that it is locked to o2 and not EE as that sim wasn't mine and I don't have access to it any more. If I left the EE sim in would the phone have quite possibly been locked to EE I wonder. Weird thing is I tried a Vodafone sim in the phone and that also works in the phone.

If your phone ever needs a replacement handset from Apple Store you could be in the same position as me and receive a replacement locked to o2 because that's what apples systems say.

Another thing I found is related to inserting different sims. If you turn off 'find my phone' when you switch sims you are no longer asked for your Apple ID password - it just does that blank screen thing with the apple logo in the middle for a couple of seconds.

Anyone any similar experiences so far?

Apparently it is not a full worldwide unlock, only Europe, Africa and the Middle East - it is in this thread somewhere someone posted, my 5S is the same as yours.

Never tried the FMP /Apple ID password insertion.

I am still worried about the phone locking down to another sim. As I have read on here how using a three sim has resulted in the phone locking to three, but just not straight away. Also read elsewhere someone found, like I did, that after initially inserting an o2 sim, he was still able to put a EE sim and it work - the problem being the phone soon locked to that EE sim. Eek

I got this deal a few weeks ago and I'm very very happy with it.
The phone was basically brand new with no marking whatsoever.
I used a 3 sim first then my giffgaff sim and it accepted it. Although I haven't tried any other sim cards to check if it's unlocked.

_______

Thanks for posting, I'm more reassured. I have heard that gifgaf and three are not supposed to cause an iPhone to lock to that network

Hi Ive just ordered one of these phones for my young daughter, I went for the cheapest £10 sim deal although I want to just use her Tesco sim when it comes, I was only charged for the phone, will I still have to cancel the o2 sim?
