Compared to Teamviewer, how is this better? Bought it, but not tried it
Pasanda to MaximusRo
13 Apr 161#99
I've bought it and tried it, and have been using teamviewer for a couple of years now. Whilst I haven't work through it in earnest now, teamviewer is designed for remote controlling another PC, where this seems to be more geared up for transmitting remote pc content to your screen. Watching films and listening to music is not what teamviewer is geared up for and the experience is usually horrible - especially high res a&v films.
Many people use a server for hosting content, not playing. Those servers are often rubbish at playing content (mine certainly is), and I use clients around the house do the playing. So if I connect this app to the server, which is always on, I am transmitting content playing on a rubbish computer, and it will play rubbish. If I transmit content from, say my main HTPC, it will look great, but I now also need to keep my HTPC on all the time, as well as my server. Whilst this may well work for many who don't run things like this, client/server is a very popular infrastructure for home media these days.
It feels a lot like the last major version of teamviewer, before they changed the mouse navigation method.
I won't be using the remote media play functions, as I use plex everywhere. So it's unlikely i'll be making much use of this app, unless I'm missing something else. But, it's only 10p wasted, so I went in with eyes open.

Not a stupid question, it's just that you've not hit a situation where it's useful. When I'm cooking I put podcasts on all the time but sometimes a kettle might get really loud, or some chopping get frenzied and the you need to rewind - walk all the way to the computer to jump it back a bit - NO! Just hit the -5s button a few times on Winamp and you're back in the room. And you can change the PC volume straight from the phone you're already running your cooking timers on. And you can use the screen to act like a laptop touchpad to control stuff from your phone. I always used to use an xbox pad with xpadder but this is a brilliant alternative. If you need to do anything where you can't just reach out to your pc in a couple of seconds this is great. If you've got an old laptop linked up as a kodi box then this lets you control it from the setee or bed. And this is all after one day of using this where I've been using an xbox pad and really nifty xpadder skilllllzzzz! It's good.
High five, brah!

13 Apr 161#84
Bought thanks. Funnily enough, I also only downloaded the free version a couple of days ago to try out and although it worked well, too many functions were only available with the full version so the timing of this offer was perfect for me too. Only really tested fully with Kodi so far but it works well once you have added it to your list of 'remote' apps. You can launch and control it totally via the app remote screen on your phone if you are close enough to see the computer display. If not close enough or in another room, you can always just use the interactive 'monitor view' feature to mirror the screen of any computer connected to your Wi-Fi network that has unified remote installed on it though I will probably stick to using teamviewer for that as I am more used to it.

At the risk of getting a torrent of abuse for what must be a really stupid question ...
So it turns your phone into a (bluetooth?) remote control, from which I can control the PC (which I just happen to be sitting next to anyway) - so what advantage does pressing a virtual button on the phone have over pressing a real button on the keyboard? ... and do you also therefore have to get some kind of usb bluetooth dongle to make it work?

I paid for the full version on Android for £2.00 and ended up asking for (and receiving) a refund. It's barely any different to the free version, most of the different remotes are just reskins of the generic media remote which don't really offer much functionality anyway.
