I bought this for a few quid more at PC World a while ago great router, but definitely upgrade to DD-WRT, as you then get many more featues

No, this is not a wifi repeater/extender
yes, The C5 would simply plug into the Openreach modem. You will also need to enter your Plusnet username and password into the PPPoE settings in the C5 to establish the internet connection.
I don't think the C5 stock firmware supports MER protocol. Also, it does not have a built in modem. So the answer is no to your question.
There seems to be two versions of the C5.
C5 v1.x uses Atheros chipset and has DD-WRT and Openwrt support.
New C5 v2 uses broadcom chipset which does not appear to have any 3rd party support at present.

Apologies for nooby question - would I be able to use this to replace my rubbish Technicolor router supplied by Plusnet - it's plugged into a BT modem? Could I simply replace my router with this and plug it into the modem?
Trying to solve regular dropouts, buffering and bad wifi.

yep the d5 is the adsl modem version. the vdsl 2 modem [fibre] version is named different

Have one running OpenWRT on BT Infinity. Great deal that this price (you will need an openreach vdsl modem for this setup).
