Tesco Mobile has scrapped EU roaming fees for the summer, meaning that both PAYG and contract customers will be able to use their existing mobile tariffs to call, text and chomp through data abroad at no extra cost. Hurrah!

The scheme, called ‘Home From Home’, is similar to Three’s excellent ‘Feel at Home’ -- in more ways than one, clearly -- but covers a staggering 31 separate countries. Unfortunately, Tesco Mobile's offering is only available between May 23rd and September 3rd, and caters exclusively to European travellers. Tough luck if you’re heading further afield this summer. Still, for everyone else it's a fantastic deal.

jsoap
25 Jun 16 #172
For those considering this, I've been using for a month on the 4gb £15 bundle, in Belgium, Germany and France. Its way better than Three feel at home - fast enough to watch the football on ToView (about 500mb a match). The ip address is in the uk so all of the catchup stuff will work also). Before topping up make sure your fee bonus preference is set to 150 voice mins - which added to the "£30 credit bonus" gives a total of 270 minutes of talk plus the 4gb data all for £15.

You kinda were trolling as the other member rightly pointed out, this is a discussion about deals. Not politics. I was pointing out its expensive out there for data roaming, which it is. I'm sure many UK roamers and holiday makers would like cheaper rates out there. On the plus side Vodafone RED has Turkey in 'Europe 2' now so if you are looking to holiday out there thats a good operator for it!

How long will my free credit last for?
You can get free credit once a month and your free credit lasts for a month, until your next monthly anniversary date. For example, if you get your first free credit on 5 January, you've got until midnight on the 4 February to use it

These rates are nothing special - seeing an EU cap on raoming charges became effective on 30th Aprip http://www.itv.com/news/2016-04-30/mobile-roaming-charges-in-the-eu-slashed-ahead-of-ban/

'operators will only be able to charge a small additional amount to domestic prices of up to 0.05 euro (3p) per minute of call made, 0.02 euro (1p) per SMS sent, and 0.05 euro (3p) per MB of data, excluding VAT.'

Was almost considering getting this SIM simply because it's free to receive a call whilst abroad on this Tesco SIM for the duration of the promotion... so could same some money by getting people to call me!

But now Three have made receiving a call free in the majority of EU destinations, except of course Three are miles cheaper than Tesco.

Like others have said, all mobile networks have been ordered to reduce their roaming charges, so this Tesco deal is not as good as it may first seem.
jsoap
28 Apr 16 #162
Just a note that this year the cap is on the additional charges above domestic rates - in previous years they specified the the maximum charge.
silverwake
28 Apr 16 #161
I think you will find all operators are abolishing all roaming charges from the 15th of June 2017 as this is a European Directive negotiated by the EU Parliament. Operators have been forced to reduce maximum roaming charges as from 30th April 2016 to €0.05/min and €0.05/Mb + VAT (75% down compared to current charges).

That is of course, providing we stay in the EU!

So this is not really a Tesco freebie at all, but all operators having to comply with EU free market regulation. Freedom to the people, another advantage of staying in the EU.

Tescos are masters of hiding prices behind layers of wonderful offers

£20 will give you £40 bonus credit - which cannot be spent on bundles and expires after a month
So your valuable £40 bonus at standard rates will give you a 160 minutes of calls or 400mb data ~ roughly equivalent to a £5 bundle.
So not really a triple bonus, and more like a 25% bonus. Smoke and mirrors.

What's interesting is that today Tesco charge 16p for out of bundle calls from the EU to the UK - yet this "deal" actually increases the charge to 25p - a 40% hike.
Can't for the life of me figure out why they charge 4p for roaming calls to the other 31 countries.

After saying that, the deal is pretty good for a one off short trip to places not covered by Three. For longer trips, the fact that you can only use for a month and you need to activate the sim before you go abroad would make Three a better option

Do you always go to the same place when you are on Holiday ? Or are you taking all inclusive tour for your family holiday abroad ? Do you just use your smart phone for calling ? If so, you should not comment on other people need, as you do not know what other people need.

People go abroad not only for Holiday, business trip, visiting friends, Relatives, etc. Also many people travel abroad solo not with family. What about Google map, Find the place of interest, opening hour of services while you are on the move, etc Walking navigation, find the restaurants, Transport planner (instead of using Taxi).

You want to arrange for dinner, dating with the someone you just met on the street ??

I don't know why people get excited about these deals.

When I go on holiday I like being uncontactable and not being able to use my phone. I make a point of leaving my people indoors as I'd much rather play with my kids than sit on my phone around a pool or on a beach.

It's amazing how many people you see these days clearly updating Facebook bragging about how wonderful their holiday.

I get people may use them as sat navs too but I'm sure those people are too tempted to check their phone every now and then. Just leave it in your hotel or where ever you're staying and enjoy your holiday!

If it is true it is 12 months to use the whole 12GB for just £20 and could be used in the EU without roaming, it is definitely a better deal, no brainer. If this deal exists it must have got picked by HUKDer ....

I think I'm missing something on this deal... certainly for calls from abroad back to the UK I don't see how this Tesco PAYG SIM would save much money. So I understand you pay the same pence per minute as you would in the UK, but according to the Tesco website that is an astronomical 25p/min. So the only way to get cheaper call rates would be to buy the £5 calling bundle which gives 150 mins (works out at 3p/min).

But from next month call charges in the EU from most operators will drop to 4.4p/min anyway (LIFE mobile have already dropped their prices - others such as EE are following soon). So not much of a saving to be gained from Tesco, plus it's a minimum £10 top-up.

So probably this is a good deal for some, especially for the data bundle - but personally I don't see what all the fuss is about. For someone only wanting to make a few short calls home from abroad or send a few texts then there is no benefit of this SIM that I can see. Obviously it's great for existing Tesco contract customers, but I won't be rushing out to get a Tesco PAYG SIM for this.

Indeed. Over the past 2 years we've roamed in France, Ireland and, more recently, in Spain using Three's Feel At Home.

Each and every time, in every country, data is so slow that Google Maps takes forever to calculate a route, web pages take ages to load, iMessages don't work properly and as for FaceTime, you must be joking - that never works. YouTube / streaming music - not a chance in hell.

This is across three different devices by the way, results are all the same. Three's Feel At Home is a con really. I'd sooner pay for a service that works.

Can you spend the £45 on PSN?
hotisgood
26 Apr 16 #63
sorry for being daft, but how long would the triple value of the top say for - 45 when topping up with 15 pounds? in e another words, what's the expiry date on this offer?
ollie87
26 Apr 16 #61
Only if we stay in the EU.
ollie87
26 Apr 16 1 #60
Covers Cyprus too, which Three does not.
Petetobin
26 Apr 16 4 #10
For people considering using a PAYG for the summer, you would need to buy a bundle (which you can't do on their triple credit plan) as data on the standard tariff is 10p/MB or £100 per GB! If you topup £15 that would allow you to buy a 4GB data bundle but you would need to spend another £10 to buy a call/text bundle.
seaniboy to Petetobin
26 Apr 16 #59
£15 for 4GB on payg with free incoming call is still a good deal where 3 dont offer 3 Like Home
seaniboy
26 Apr 16 #58
Telefonica must have that on o2 system...it co owns Tesco Mobile.

Now when will o2 (if) launch it

Vodafone will wipe out any potential arbitrage opps

26 Apr 16 #55
I also just noticed this. So its OK for short breaks but if you relocate it won't be any good past the first month.

Our fair use policy (see below) means you can use your UK data, minutes and text allowance, free credit or bundles in Home From Home countries for up to 28 days from 23 May until 3 September 2016 (23:59 BST). That’s because Home From Home is aimed at our customers on holidays or short breaks.
Naith
26 Apr 16 1 #37
Here in Spain Vodafone have just scrapped all roaming charges within the EU & US for all contract customers. That means I won't have to bother buying a giff gaff SIM when I'm in the UK on holiday in a fortnight
winchman to Naith
26 Apr 16 #54
Lets all get a Spanish contract then, how much is a 500min, 2gb sim only?

So it will be cheaper to call a foreign sim in UK than using one of the expensive UK payg sims, except perhaps '3'.

presumeably the aim is to be able to buy a contract from any country in Europe, which ever is the best deal, and use it anywhere, be good when it happens.
ithorne
26 Apr 16 #53
It's from May 23rd - which is very annoying as I am in Spain next week...
m5rcc
26 Apr 16 #52
So voted cold: no better than any other Mickey Mouse "free roaming" deal. How can we have gone backwards with the cost of data being cheaper to being able not to tether? I used to be able to have worldwide, unlimited data, that could be tethered on T-Mobile for £15/mth.
m5rcc
26 Apr 16 1 #50
And it ain't true - NO TETHERING!

26 Apr 16 1 #38
Top up £15, it gets tripled to £45 then can you use it to top up PSN Wallet?
selliot7 to uk_shahj
26 Apr 16 #46
I had the same idea but it looks like PSN can't be topped up with Tesco unfortunately.

26 Apr 16 #44
going to slovakia in a weeks time.. best deal i could find was with o2 on a payg sim of £1.99 a day for 500mb :-/ so so close. lol

three feel at home doesnt cover slovakia unfortunately.

I got this text from giffgaff recently:
Great news. If you've got a goodybag, from 28th April the cost of using your phone in the EU is coming down. Calls will be 4p/min to make & 0.5p to receive, texts 1.5p to send & 0p to receive, and data just 4p/mb.
For full details, check out giff.ly/EU_Update.
jsoap to diddydavro

So £40 a gb with giffgaff , vs Tesco payg £7.50 for a 1gb bundle

No self-respecting HUKD'r would fail to move. Would they? See it for what it is, a good deal if you are going on hols to one of the countries this year. Heat added.
elitom to qwerta369
26 Apr 16 2 #15
oh you are so cynical !!!

could also be Tesco Mobiel are testing the waters and also trying to get deals in place in case the UK votes to leave the EU - then all EU wide regulations will not apply after the final exit occirs!

So they may be doing some real worls nalaysis how much it will cost and is it economic to do so - and by limiting the deal they limit their exposure if loads of HUKDer only take the sim cards to use only in EU :stuck_out_tongue:

Couldn't you just order a free pay and go sim, top up with X amount for example £5 then apply a data bundle for example 500mb for £5 then use that for the duration of your holiday?

So, top up £15, get another £30 free credit (which can't be used abroad)

Data is 10p per MB! That's expensive!
150MB and you've kissed goodbye to your £15 :disappointed:

New EU regulation come into force 1st May so you will find most carriers will reduce their prices massivly.

Got a txt from ee today , We’ll be introducing new Standard rates for calls and texts in our Europe Zone from 30th April and even better data options too. It’ll be 4.4p per minute to make calls and 1.8p per text and it’ll be £3 for 75MB of data (all inc. VAT).

depending if Britain stays in the EU December 2017 EU roaming charges will be abolished
dazzapat to bigjeremy

What these new prices means is it'll be cheaper to be out of bundle while roaming abroad in the EU than it will be while out of bundle in your home location.
