Have to agree internal memory is terrible, looking at rooting my wifes to try and get more memory, free up some from the bloatware etc. She uses facebook, dropbox ands whatsapp and always low memory, even though I have put what I can on the sd card.

I have the old MOTO E with 2gb internal memory, and yeh, it is an issue for me, I juggle apps depending on what I want. However it is not a disaster, and did only cost me 40 quid. Bearing that in mind, for someone with average needs I would suggest that 8gb internal memory would be absolutely plenty.

Daughter got moto e on £7.50 Tesco contract due an upgrade soon. Internal storage is an issue. Good for txt and web browsing but more than a few basic apps and storage is full.
We've thought about upgrading to new phone on same contract. Selling it £50 ish. Buying Zenfone 5 for £74 from ebuyer.com. (Got 5% off code) Makes Zenfone effectively £25.

So how come my Moto E (1st gen ) with only 4Gb on KitKat runs several apps ok?

Thought this would be an improvement!

Warning.... This phone is not suitable for anybody other than the lightest of users who do not want to install more than a few apps.

I speak from experience.

There is very little storage capacity. Even moving everything possible to sd card, updates quickly become an issue.

My wife's now sits in the drawer unused as she could not install more than a few apps, and I would in no way rate her as even a medium user.

For those people who are planning on using this as a daily phone, rather than an interim/backup phone. Please be aware that the onboard memory in this phone is extremely low (8gb, the majority of which is used up by the OS and system apps).

My sister bought this phone for my technology challenged mother, and with 4 apps installed (WhatsApp, Car Breakdown, Facebook and a Torch) the phone started notifying of low memory. I've put an SD card in, which has photos and a few mp3s on it, but the space is still extremely limited.

I upgraded the device from KitKat to Lollipop for her, hoping for some improvement, but she still receives the notifications.

If this device were to get a 6.0 update, this wouldn't be a problem, as the OS would see the SD card as internal storage, but until that's the case, it's worth pointing out.

Other than that, it's a great little phone.

Thanks for your reply, I can see both sides of the coin. I only need the texts, as I rarely use the mins & data on my phone every month. A couple of my mates, said Tesco was the best for coverage, even half way up a mountain as one of them is a triathlete. I didn't want to go with a company I've never heard of and I believe I get club card points as well with this deal. The battery life was also a factor for me, as I know that Apple & Samsung are useless for batteries.

Yes if you continued on another 12 months it would cost the same but the point is you're not locked in to doing so, because there is no cost of the phone to pay off.

Phone + Sim over 24 months, you are legally locked into paying £180.
Sim over 12 months, you are legally locked into paying £90.

That is how they can offer you the 'free' phone, because they know they'll get the cost back over the two years. With the sim only deal you can cancel and not pay them anything more, get a better deal elsewhere.

You're not getting the phone for free, you're paying for it by being locked into paying them for 2 years, guaranteeing their reimbursement. Yes, if you're going to be paying for two years anyway getting a contract is obviously a better deal but that's not why people buy Sim-Only. You buy SO for two reasons, if you already have a phone paid off and if you don't want to be locked into a legal contract for 2 years, if for any reason you can no longer afford it you can cancel it sooner.

Also as others have pointed out there are better deals than that on Sim Only.

Your total cost over 24 months is £180.

I could buy this handset at £59 and take this sim only deal:

http://i.imgur.com/KwqodNM.jpg

£179 total but double the data and I would have the chance to switch to a better deal at any time in the two years, on a monthly basis. You're locked in for two years. Better deal.

I could even take this one:

http://i.imgur.com/WohSErO.jpg

Which is a total of £201 but 4x the minutes, double the data and again that freedom to cancel every 30 days.
djh1975
11 Apr 16 #37
You've proved me right, the phone is free. After 12 months, you will need another 12 months at a similar monthly price. Both deals come to the same amount over 24 months but one has a free phone and the other doesn't.
Weenie Beenie
11 Apr 16 #36
You honestly think a company is genuinely giving you a £60 phone for free? Why would they?

I just looked on uSwitch, this is what I found:

http://i.imgur.com/13XcRVb.jpg

So no, Sim Only is 12 months. You're locked in for an extra 12 months, to cover the cost of the phone. I've never heard of a 24 months sim only deal, that would be ludicrous.
ciderno1
11 Apr 16 #35
Exactly.
Maskarova
10 Apr 16 #34
I'm not trying to be rude as we all have different means and budgets but for 95p extra you can have a bit more and you are not tied to a long contract.

http://www.uswitch.com/mobiles/sim_only_deal/3601d1775797d1726b2b188f29a4994630265c91?page=%2Fmobiles%2Fcompare%2Fsim_only_deals%2F&position=8&sorted_by=monthly_cost

If a better deal comes along then you can move on.
djh1975
10 Apr 16 1 #33
The bit I'm struggling to understand is that the same sim only deal is also £7.50 a month. Nothing in my contract to suggest extra payments for the phone, which makes the phone free.
macro duck
10 Apr 16 #32
250 mins 5000 texts and 500 mb data is costing him £5 per month on top of the phone cost, not a bad deal if you are happy with the phone.
macro duck
10 Apr 16 #31
Yes Tesco tell you how much you pay for the phone in your monthly contract. I bought the Moto G 8gb last week and I pay £13.50 a month for two years. £9 for my package and £4.50 for the phone. After two years my monthly payment will drop to £9 per month.
tje1978
10 Apr 16 1 #30
So 24 x £7.50 = £180

The phone can be had for £60 new, that means your contract for min/text/data over 24m is £120 now that maybe good or bad i do not know but the phone you are getting is not free its paid for is your overall cost of contract.
djh1975
10 Apr 16 #29
24 months, the same price as the same sim only deal. Not much in the contract, I don't have to pay for the phone as far as I can see.
tje1978
10 Apr 16 #28
How long is your contract?

Typing on one now. £40 about four months ago, I assumed it was being discontinued.

Terrible camera by any standards. No flash. No compass oddly. Screen a little less sharp than previous model due to just being stretched but ok.

However for webrowsing and general use its excellent. All the basic iPlayer and stuff works fine. They support unlocking the bootloader so you can use cyanogenmod ROMs to keep up to date. Official updates don't seem to happen...

So a fairly safe bet generally you don't care about taking decent photos. But I think £60 is a fairly normal price not really a bargain plus its getting a bit old anf must be due an update soon so if you can I'd wait a month or two and get something better for the price.

10 Apr 16 #26
Oops, mixed it up with EE. Tesco did not charge me, they just texted me warning at around 750MB, and at 1GB just blocked my data till next month. Obviously I waved to them the very next month for "unlimited data limited to 1GB"
tleecher06
10 Apr 16 1 #25
Yeh, right. I've had Tesco contract for £10/month with unlimited internet since 2011 and I was happy until I exceeded 1GB and got charged a fortune after that. And guess what Tesco's CS replied to me when I mentioned that my contract states "Unlimited data"! They said: "Yes Sir, you are right but you can not exceed 1GB". What a laugh!!!
djh1975

10 Apr 16 #21
Yes, but only 250mins and 500gb data. I get 1000mins and 3gb data for £5.50. As other have pointed out, you are paying for the phone in your contract. If something sounds too good to be true blah blah.
djh1975
10 Apr 16 #8
I signed up for this phone on contract last week and I love it. Better battery than the iPhone & Galaxy. I have to vote cold on this deal though, because there is no point wasting money on a phone when you can get it free on contract. Sim only deals are no better than contract deals with a free phone.
