To celebrate Earth Day on Fri 22 Apr, Starbucks is giving a free drink to anyone who buys one of its coffee tumblers (travel mugs without a handle) in store.
This includes the £1 medium-sized reusable cup, so you could get your normal Starbucks drink for just £1 (normally up to £3.75).

Also up until 30th June each time you reuse your tumbler for a hot or cold drink you get 50p off.

This is a great offer if you are a regular Starbucks customer... might not be available at airports/ stations/ some franchises.

I went into my local and just asked the man if they had any of the world earth day promotion tumblers (as I could not see any reusable cups on the shelf) and he went out the back and came back with a £1 cup - asked me for drink choice and job done - was actually surprised they had any left as this was nearly 5pm! Then left the cup on the side at home and my OH put in the recycling bin as though it was a conventional takeaway cup!!

went to Starbucks in Sutton and apparently none of the local stores got any of the cheap tumblers. The guy was a bit annoyed that Starbucks advertised this as it looked like I wasn't the first annoyed person in the shop.

Tried to get a £1 tumbler at two different shops 2day...none left in both they tried to upsell me another one for £8...
So the real story is...give each store 50x £1 cups and upsell the rest so they pay for the cheaper coffee that we are offering

Starbucks Warrington (Gemini) are honoring the £1 cups. The guys in my office have done 2 separate runs, the first time (at 7.30am) apparently the girl seemed pretty confused by it all but did it anyway, the second time at 9ish they had obviously clocked on to it and did say that this should only be on the expensive cups but as it's been all over the net and because of the demand they are doing it until the cups run out!

No £1 cups in stock in Ashford, Kent. Also told that the promotion didn't apply to the £1 cups anyway, only the expensive ones.

Disappointed in Starbucks for this, especially seeing as MSE's post about it seemed like they had corresponded with Starbucks about the offer and it read like the £1 cups would 100% be included.

Oh well.

Just went into my local store, was told the tumblers are £13.99, when i showed him this deal on my smartphone he said that's nothing to do with Starbucks and no company would do giveaways like this....Ooooops, he's clearly not familiar with what goes on in retail world, all i got for free was a roll his eyes at me when i questioned what he was saying. I get my morning coffee from Starbucks usually but it appears they are trying to alienate regulars...Or someone is. I suggest Starbucks arrange for this offer to be removed from the internet. I have also tweeted them @StarbucksUK as well as @MartinSLewis who is a great champion of such promotions, i'm sure he does enough research to ensure he is not lleft with egg on his face, it would appear that HE has been misinformed also.

I think you're getting corporate tax muddled up with VAT. They haven't been paying corporate tax which many big companies haven't been doing which is the tax on profits. (or at least to the level they should be).

Brilliant again some one with no clue on tax laws spouting what they believe is true because they didn't understand tax law. next time you might want to check up on Starbucks tax bill for this and last year. All above board and following UK tax laws.

jamiex to otterboxer

If you're referring to VAT, then I think you mean 83.33333p.

If you're referring to Corporation Tax, you should pay 100p - 20% of the profit they will make, as they wouldn't be paying 20p in Corporation Tax unless it cost them nothing to produce the mug.

Starbucks paid corp tax of £8m on sales of £400m where they made £34m profit.

They spend a lot of their money on in the "Research and Development of coffee" in their operations abroad - despite it being a drink used since the 9th Century. Thats where all their money goes - just like all the other big corps.
winchman to paulsmith288
21 Apr 16 #31
Trouble is there is no real way of us knowing what profit they really make because of all the companies and countries involved. Yes they paid $8m in UK, but it's really a bit of a stag in the dark to the real amounts involved.
mocmocamoc

They also do pay the VAT, nobody was ever disputing that. What they weren't paying was any corporation tax on profits.

Eslick is correct. Our tax rules, if printed would be a tower of paper as tall as an adult. Each year it gets more complicated. There's no chance anyone can understand it all, and lots of chances to find inconsistencies and errors and exploit them legally. And it'll just keep getting worse.
eslick
21 Apr 16 3 #27
no I actually point the finger in the right place, you must live in a dream world if you think anyone wouldn't follow tax law to reduce their tax liability, we all do it or should I say we all should, if you don't you will know someone who will. Companies are the same, they have a duty to their shareholders to make money that's it. You can forget anything else they say they are there for one thing and one thing only.

No lets point the fingers at the Government, and not just this one, you can go back decades and every government have been allowing companies to do it and since the stories broke so people who don't work in the tax or accounting industry first head about it they have done nothing, only this year that they announced they were going to do something. Best of all last week they formed an alliance of Europes big countries to figure out how to fix this, Netherlands, Luxembourg, Ireland the big players were not part of the group so nothing will be done. To add to this Switzerland where most of the money is funnels through isn't even in Europe so not part of the group.

Oh and don't say support your local independent coffee shop, they might not have the most expensive accountants but the reality is they are working to the same laws and same process as the big companies.

Ask your MP why the government has allowed this for so long, guess its so the press and then the general public take the heat out of the government when reality is its all of their fault.

Guess who actually pays the corporation tax?

It's us, the customers. We pay the companies money for goods or services, the price includes profits, and some of the profits go to HMRC.
No customers, no revenue, no profit, no tax.

http://europa.eu/rapid/press-release_IP-15-5880_en.htm The EU seem to think they have been given an 'unfair selective tax advantage for Starbucks in the Netherlands', illegal under EU state aid rules. They may well have closed Alki, and they are paying tax now, but they were not before. It is still not clear if the Profit they declare and pay tax on is actually correct.
